I was never especially fussed by Christmas but it is a big thing for my wife and her enthusiasm has rubbed off on me over the years to a certain extent. Moreover, we have two young daughters who love it – so to hate it would be extremely dreary.

I’ll keep an eye out for you DD!

derek – I remember that thread – wasn’t it a bruised torso that attracted some very uncharitable comments!

I’ve not been here for a couple of years (first registered in 2005 before the great crash), so forgive my ignorance but did Fred ever resurface? The last I knew he’d fully blown a casket and got a perma-ban.

GusGus never appeared on my radar for quite some time despite my fondness for electronica and them having been around for 22 years. It was nice to go through their back catalogue. Here’s their latest single.

Officers often use their own mobiles for policing purposes as the job issue ones, depending on the force, are not always the best. Officers are free to carry their own phones – clearly you’re not allowed to use it whilst driving or spend all day on it making private calls during the firms time.

EDIT – use between depts, other officers, professional agencies etc – not dishing numbers out to victims or in other such circumstances that would be inappropriate.

saxonrider – I know what nostalgia is. This it isn’t. This place has lost something and it’s not so busy. There’s a sizeable number of contributors that made this place interesting who are absent – or certainly have been in the last 5/6 weeks as per tons observations. Believe me I’m not the type to get misty eyed about the past. I’m sure it’s just a lull and will pick up again – or at least that’s my hope.

@scotroutes – I’ve been on this forum 10 + years and for me it’s definitely lost some appeal over the last two or so years – the quality of post/thread has dipped off. No longer do I get the belly laughs or feel as connected with the topics as I did. It’s not wistfulness on my part I don’t think – perhaps I’ve changed – I dunno? I was hoping that upon returning it would have recovered some of its spark, but if anything it’s become even more languid.

I took an enforced sabbatical of sorts from the forum a year ago due to a recurrent shoulder injury that prevented me from riding. It has recently been operated on. I’m in rehab and hope to be back on my bike towards the start of December. I found not being able to ride during this period quite depressing so I distanced myself from all things MTB’ing to avoid a constant reminder of what I was missing. Since the surgery a month ago I’ve returned to the site as a lurker – and what’s struck me is how lack-lustre it seems to have become. Some of the more interesting personalities have disappeared and the posts aren’t as engaging – for whatever reason – comedy value, interest, challenging etc. Also the threads don’t appear to turn over as quickly as they once did – is it a less busy place?

For a sf noir thriller see ‘Chasm City’ by Alastair Reynolds – it held my attention firmly.

I’ve not read the thread so I maybe speaking out of context as it’s progressed but I’d just like to pitch in that I experienced great customer service from Silverfish in relation to an out of warranty claim. Rich was prompt in answering Emails and ensured dispatch of a charitably discounted frame was speedily and efficiently handled.

I want to say Rawhead Rex, but that was so incredibly shite that it fell off the bottom of the scale to reappear at the top under genius.

I’m gonna go with The Tree of Life. For such a rated film, my ass actually fell off through boredom. Colossal pseudo-intellectual bollox.

Barring some dubious reffing I can’t see Fury doing well against Klitchko. I think he will be stopped within 5 rounds.

Fury’s the only boxer I’ve seen to nearly knock himself out with his own uppercut.

Your son might want to have a read of Future Noir – The Making of Blade Runner by Paul M. Sammon – great book.

For the uninitiated I think this is the original thread from 5 years ago –

    http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/can-anyone-lend-me-a-mint-sauce-key-ring-for-a-few-days

… with a summation by wwaswas

    a) man wants sheepy keyring to copy
    b) sheep creator offers to sort it out – lots of people decide to buy
    c) process takes a long time, people (largely not the buyers) get uppity and ladle abuse on sheep man.
    d) items arrive, some people question resemblance of items to said sheep.

The Directors Cut – it contains an important scene lasting all but twelve seconds, but is hugely significant. The ending is tidied up.

I’m not a big fan of Schwalbe and the Nobby Nic in particular is beyond shite, but I’ve been impressed with the Rock Razor that I’ve fitted to the rear. Excellent rolling resistance and the side-knobs dig in predictably. You get used to the tyre gliding slightly whilst corner before hooking up.

I’d get into it for sure, but I don’t think I’d be applying guyliner and blusher.

Proper New Romanticism was a few years before my time really. My dress in the mid – late 80’s and early 90’s was heavily influenced by Depeche Mode and I’ve some humiliating photos of me knocking about in white jeans and studded black leather jackets with custom paint jobs on :D

Just over a week ago I had SS build up a set – DT Swiss M442 rims on 350 hubs. Quite impressed given the battering they’ve just had round the 7Staines. A few spokes needed re-tensioning on the rear, but other than that (and that’s to be expected) no probs – still early days of course.

    Cheers you lot!

The Ti Thomson h-b really sets it off nicely.

My first 27.5 – it definitely carried speed better than a 26, but who knows what that was attributable to in reality – so many variables, plus the thrill of a new bike.

My past FS’s have been link actuated single pivots – loving the four bar. I prefer the suspension to feel and look as simple as possible. I don’t like lots of meccano everywhere.

Dez – I had the an old Hustler until it broke (that was a great bike). The Hj is still going strong!

Slighty off topic, but has anyone noticed the ludicrous pouts and ‘blue steel’ gurns that some of the journos pull in riding shots? There’s one in particular – he must be taking the piss or have a staggering lack of self-awareness.

    m0rk,

I was run ragged on it. My average speed according to Strava was 3.8MPH! I was livid on the ride (that I abandoned) and moaned like a bitch when I got back to my completely disinterested wife, thanking God I haven’t got to put up with that sh1t, back home.

All a reflection more on me than the trails of course :P

    All the best to you.

My wife is from Petersfield and when visiting the in-laws I’ll have a blast round QECP. After the last horrendous wet suffer-fest I vowed I’d only put up with the South Downs chalk faff in the height of summer.

The locals must be made of sterner stuff than I.
