I have one, imo they’re nicely cut but not particularly slim/fitted. I usually have to size up for anything overly cycling specific but just got my normal size for the Rapha and could probably still get a layer or two underneath (6’2″, 80kg, in a large). So as long as the sleeves are long enough you may want a small.

Instagram is good for free KB stuff. I’ve been doing this with a few variations recently (albeit in a cold damp garage, not outside in Florida):

I love those Ortleib Gravel Panniers too but am looking for a mod to stop the noise. It spoils a really good product.

    I came across this bloke:

    Gear Review: Ortlieb Gravel Pack

…using a 42″ Rokstrap (~£12 off Amazon) vertically around each pannier to hold it against the rack

    Salsa anything bar cradle

Funny you should bring this up in an ‘ultralight’ thread. This is one bit of kit where I’ve found a slight weight penalty is absolutely worth it over lighter options: rock solid and allows you to move the weight down and closer to the hub to reduce the effect on handling. Also makes cable routing a lot easier.

Tailfin stuff looks good. I’m not completely sold on the rack pack thing as I don’t fancy that much weight so high up, but I’m thinking about 2x10L mini panniers on the fairly minimal rack I’ve already got (Tubus Vega). Been using Ortlieb Gravel Panniers recently but they do rattle quite a bit which the Tailfins claim not to.

I use Bitsbox for small orders – postage is reasonable, no minimums etc. They do bundles/kits as well:

Getting on with the saddle is really important, if you can’t bend forward at the hips a road bike will generally always feel too long because your body wants to sit upright to avoid pressure.

Some bars have a lot of reach built into them as well, if you don’t want to go any smaller on the stem then a cheap Deda RHM bar will knock off another few cm

4700 long cage mech will almost certainly work with 11-36. If not it will with an extender like this:

    https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/gear-spares/sunrace-rear-mech-extended-link-for-wide-ratio-cassettes/

I’m running 11-40 with a long cage 4700 mech no problems using one

SJS also have a few GRX chainsets in stock depending what crank length you want!

I ordered a few bits from 7rbags the other day, told them not to worry about posting anything until better times. The owner did suggest the post was still be operating as they are based in the west, but equally they have bigger things to worry about.

I run my Fargo flat bar, it’s a 2012 model but the general idea behind the geo is probably still the same. With drops I found the only real usable hand position was in the drops themselves – because of the massive stack it just felt odd reaching forward but not down to the hoods. I worked out that the drops were about where a flat bar would be, so a flat bar with Ergon grips actually gives me more usable hand positions for mixed on/off road rides. I have some OO Geoff bars to try when I get around to it as I didn’t want to commit Jones money for an experiment, but I can’t see why they won’t work – worst case maybe a slightly longer stem.

“anyone ending isolation on day seven is strongly advised to limit contact with vulnerable people, not visit crowded or poorly ventilated spaces, and work from home”

    Health Minister on radio 4.

She never actually said any of this though, simply ‘exercise caution’ – ymmv etc.

The intention/evidence behind this (separate arguments) is irrelevant if the messaging isn’t clear. I’d wager most people will take away nothing beyond the ‘only have to isolate for 7 days now’ bit.

To add a similar anecdote to those above, I have had two close contacts this week that have left me under no illusions I am probably going to get it. Been doing LFTs every day since – all -ve. Sore throat as of late last night/this morning, still -ve LFT. Had to ignore the official list of symptoms in order to book a PCR.

Chest compressions move a small amount of air in and out of the chest, if the heart isn’t beating then oxygen requirements are actually fairly minimal. With rescue breaths some of the air will also enter the stomach, continuous rescue breaths would increase the risk of the patient vomiting (no bueno). ALS (advanced life support) involves continuous breaths however this only ‘begins’ once an airway has been inserted that ensures air will only enter the lungs

For interest was it sold as an auction or buy it now? My understanding is that a BIN even for a 2nd hand item has the same returns requirements as a shop

I came to the conclusion that a dry bag on top of a simple rack is the most effective carrying method for terrain that isn’t too gnarly. Even the Ortlieb gravel panniers are still ~600g each, whereas a 20L Alpkit dry bag is <200g.

Rack-wise I have a Tubus Vega, they used to be ~£50 from the German online bike shops like Rose. It is about as simple as you can get and 600g all in, but still rated to the usual 20kg or thereabouts.

The other school of thought would be that if you’re only carrying a few kilos on it any rack will do, maybe sourcing some higher quality bolts for added piece of mind.

How can you argue against things like this?

Even if it was 7.6%…so what? Everyone in hospital jumps out of bed and is fine again and we all forget the whole thing?

Not much constructive to add here, but bloody hell how good is gear these days?!

Last played about 20 years ago, never really got past the power chord punk phase and sold everything (horrid Marshall SS amp). Picked up a Classic Vibes Tele and a Yahama THR5 a few months ago ready for lockdown part deux – unbelievable for £500 all in.

Youtube is also invaluable. I can’t play by ear yet, but now much prefer just watching channels like Marty Music over tabs.

    Ramble over/on.

I have an older Escapade with the steel fork. I think it’s a nicer frame than they get credit for, maybe because it’s not 853 or whatever, and maybe because they are mainly an MTB company. Anyway it has a neat ovalised top tube like the Fairlights, and IIRC frame weight was ~2kg for my large. Even the steel fork was ~900g which is pretty good going.

I don’t have anything pure roadie to compare it to but I got it for lightweight touring to avoid a tank-like Surly or CdF. I’d imagine it’s light and lively compared to them, but that is obviously relative!

Looking at some of these myself, so can’t help other than I’ve read that they fit quite large. They do free returns so I might just take a punt.

Been looking at a Lunar Solo myself, 680g and a single pole design seems perfect for bikepacking.

I’m just wondering how they are for tall people? I’m not completely averse to a single skin tent, but feet touching the end is definitely a showstopper.

As above, no easy way really. Try and re-use the spokes in the same place though, so you should have 4 separate ‘sets’: left inside, left outside, right inside, right outside

Ditto and ditto. I have a Fargo too – it feels like an absolute tank but I have to remind myself that the frame and fork only weigh ~750g more than a nice skinny steel road f+f.

Easiest first move would be to get a medium cage mech and 11-34 cassette. If you’re not too fussed about sticking with Ultegra then the new 105 R7000 groupset is great value.

Ditto, I ended up using a R8000 mech with 4700 shifters/chainset – worked flawlessly. I think it was becoming such an issue they released a new 5800 mech outside of the normal product cycle (FD-5801)

Eyeballing it with the chain off it doesn’t look too far out, but it’s definitely sitting beyond the 11t.

Only error message I get is if the high limit is too tight and it prevents the mech from doing the little overshift wiggle. The limit screws don’t appear to alter the index point with Di2, just stop the chain from dropping off the cassette.

Unplugged everything and left it for a few hours, but it hasn’t forgotten any settings or ‘reset’. Assume there’s another wee battery in there somewhere? Ran the crash reset mode but that doesn’t fix anything.

Tried a different wheel (Pro 4) with same result. It’s almost as if the driveside end cap is a few mm too wide, or the mech hanger is a few mm too thick. Either way I think it’s a shop job :(

New install. I’ve been following the guide, but when I use e-tube to put it into the 5th cog like it says, it’s actually sitting in the 6th.

Hanger is aligned using tool – I’ll get a second opinion from shop on Monday if no luck though.

I can tighten the high limit enough to stop it dropping the chain, but the software shows an error because the adjustment is too big and it starts impeding the mech.

I have one with 120mm up front and it’s ace. It’s an older model so clearance is a bit tight in the rear, but that’s not an issue with the new ones. As above there’s a big thread on them that’s worth a read.

Last time I went up Snowdon everyone up there was clutching disposable cups from the cafe. Plenty of them on the ground too. Great idea.

I try my best, but the fact people still throw their crap on the floor makes me think we’ll all be roaming the post-apocalyptic wasteland long before a meaningful number of people manage to change their habits.

Sold to Rab originally, who shortly after decided to make their own packs under the Rab name, and sold Pod on again to Planet X (to die). Shame, but there’s still Aiguille in Staveley. For bikepacking gear Wildcat and Alpkit manufacture in the UK.
