got mine done earlier this year on a similar 2004 frame.
free bearings and labour at the shop under the lifetime warranty. didnt need to show the receipt and they didnt even ask if i was the original owner (which im not).

great service, but may just have been lucky in not having to pay anything

should have bought a marin- free lifetime warranty and labour on all frame bearings (which tbh was a surprise to me when i went to the shop!).

might be worth checking if orange do something similar?

dave@planetx, can i ask a quick question about the tyre sale?

on your home sale page you have the tyres all listed as BOGOF:: Michelin/ Continental etc…, and discounted of up to 60 odd percent. Does this mean you are selling the tyres at a tenner each AND Buy One Get One Free? I only ask as i tried to add two to the checkout and the total came up at £20 (i.e. not getting one free). Not that i am complaining at the price- it is still cheaper than anywhere else 20 quid for 2 tyres, but was just a tiny bit confused? will probably get some in the next week, but just wanted clarification really!

And a cheeky question- are you always going to be offering such good deals, or is this until you get to move into your new warehouse?

    Thanks

further away from the edge of tectonic plates?
two plates moving towards each other push up forming the ridge, and therefore as you move away, the ocean gets deeper?*

if you have the time, have a glance at this new release:
    http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2009/11/the-cru-hack/
    [/url]

if you don't want to read it, then it basically sums up the ethical problems of hacking and publishing emails. however, it does show an example of why the extracts inthe telegraph have been taken out of context. the key paragraph of interest in this discussion is here:

No doubt, instances of cherry-picked and poorly-worded “gotcha” phrases will be pulled out of context. One example is worth mentioning quickly. Phil Jones in discussing the presentation of temperature reconstructions stated that “I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline.” The paper in question is the Mann, Bradley and Hughes (1998) Nature paper on the original multiproxy temperature reconstruction, and the ‘trick’ is just to plot the instrumental records along with reconstruction so that the context of the recent warming is clear. Scientists often use the term “trick” to refer to a “a good way to deal with a problem”, rather than something that is “secret”, and so there is nothing problematic in this at all. As for the ‘decline’, it is well known that Keith Briffa’s maximum latewood tree ring density proxy diverges from the temperature records after 1960 (this is more commonly known as the “divergence problem”–see e.g. the recent discussion in this paper) and has been discussed in the literature since Briffa et al in Nature in 1998 (Nature, 391, 678-682). Those authors have always recommend not using the post 1960 part of their reconstruction, and so while ‘hiding’ is probably a poor choice of words (since it is ‘hidden’ in plain sight), not using the data in the plot is completely appropriate, as is further research to understand why this happens.

it might be worth following, if only to see the telegraph shown up for what looks like reporting more likely to come from the sun or the daily mail.
having talked to a number of the scientists mentioned (when i was a student there this year) in the emails i think i know a bit about what is going on in some of the extracts shown by the telegraph, and their context. of course i havnt seen any of the files that were released illegally, i probably have some of the earlier copies of these documents myself. it would be intereseting to see what files have been released, but more importantly which files have not been released.

Don't ask about salary etc, and if they raise it – say that as its a grad. level job I'm sure you have a fixed rate and that really you are more interested about working in this field

the job advert has a salary range, but reading the other thread a few days ago it seems like a hit/miss question going in with the money question. Think i will be asking them about possible training opportunities as a full package rather than just money. Does that sound like a reasonable question?

pretty much treat it like an interview

it is an interview, and my only opportunity for a job at the moment so have been working hard on preparing for it.

and remember, we're all rooting for you

is that becuase i am a burden on the taxpayers? 😉
cheers for all the good advice. i am very surprised noone has given a cheeky response yet, must be some kind of stw record?!

same as trekster, made not too far away. and with a family member and a few friends working on the belts in there, i doubt it will be long before i get a go on the company test bike. one of my friends there has tested their full suss bike with belt drive and really enjoyed it.

can't say much about longevity as i have no idea how many miles it has done, but they do a lot of serious testing in that place, so if a belt can stand a thousand hours on a car (equivalent to 160000 km i am told), then i would expect their bike drive sets to stand a little longer than your average cassette/ chain combo.

southwell isn't too far if i am planning on commuting in the morning, but much further and i may begin to consider driving.
all good suggestions, think chesterfield looks like a good plan, i will check the others later today. just got to crack on with company and job research now- anybody got any good interview advice?

and noone has suggested much north of mansfield- is it a bombsite, and am i likely to get raped/ mugged/ stabbed by commuting there every day?

    defaultslipper

all good suggestions, been checking some places out over the web and will hopefully have a chance to have a look when im down there in a few weeks.

cheers for the suggestions. havnt considered anything as far as sheffield, as i dont know if the work place has anywhere to shower/ wash if i arrived in a mess. Wouldnt want to turn up for the first day of work dripping wet/ sweating. Will be asking these questions at the interview. As a company who prides themselves as "green thinking", they might be interested in someone willing to commute on a bike instead of a car.
But if i am looking as far as Sheffield, then i may also be tempted to look at places like Matlock.

Keep the suggestions coming, more bike-friendly-close-trails the better

if you over tightened the rebound with the two spanners then you are gonna need bruce lee's finger strength to undo it with only the rotational force on the rebound knob, and risk rounding it off.
might take longer and be a bit messier, but i think taking the rebound caps off again is the safest way to prevent more damage imo.

    good luck!

    defaultslipper
    Free Member

could it be that you have overtightened the rebound bits when reassembling? think they are only finger tight, so if you tightened using the two spanners you could have easily gone too far. only a stab in the dark, but if you have over-tightened it you may have caused the super-slow rebound you say you are experiencing. if you remove the upper stanchions again, you should be able to spin the rebound using the two spanners (i.e. one on top, one underneath the spacer), as if you were taking it to bits again. i suspect that might be where your lack of rebound control is coming from, unless someone else has a better idea?

the other thought for the slow rebound is did you cycle the fork while you were putting the new oil in to remove any air bubbles? maybe a new thread is required to get the tech guys with all the knowledge to fix your new problem, but i think with a bit of fettling you should sort it fairly easily!

cheers guys, will take a look at some of those suggestions. i don't know if i am going to have a car so want to keep it close to mansfield until i know for certain.

i am using firefox, is NoScript a setting or a plugin?

add-on available through mozilla's page, here's the link:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722

very easy to use, it blocks all the ads and then you select which ones you want to let work. blocks all java links on pages aswell so takes a bit of time to set up as you re-visit all your regular sites.

makes pages load quicker and blocks the unwanted bits on yer webpages. i think trhere might be a similar program called greasemonkey, but looks harder to use. im no computer genious, but noscript does everything i need easily

yep top cap on mine felt a little soft, but used an adjustable on it. you might have a bigger problem using an adjustable on the insides thogh. stage 12 (on my link above) requires you to hold onto one bit which was tricky to get at because of a spring while you undo the top cap. so you will need 2 spanners, or your adjustable spanner and a small profile set of pliers if yours is anything like mine?

    in response to brakes argument:

they are good for about a month after servicing but then start to ramp up loads and have to be serviced again

i have had my 2004 z1's for about 3 years and only needed one service a few months ago. just to balance out the argument! very reliable fork for the same price as a lot of the bottom of teh range forks these days, and much much better!

    defaultslipper

get yourself some firefox (and NoScript) and block the adverts you dont like. just for balance, i understand the need for advertising, but i only let through the adverts that have some relation to biking on this site. if i wanted to play poker, i know plenty of other places i can go for that.

i come here for a balanced and reasonable approach to biking related topics 😉

interesting- what do you have in each of the legs on your fork? im wondering if you have an air cartridge in one fork could that be the reason why you only need a small amount of oil in that leg?

left leg is when you are sitting on bike, so for mine, left leg is eta (lock-out). for yours, i think right leg has you rebound and air preload. according to marzocchi, your left leg has nothing special in it, does that sound right? so at the top of your forks there will be a plastic cap that doesn't adjust anything, and under the cap there is no valve for your air preload? on the table for 2005 marzocchis (page 120), it shows that the z1 fr 2 and z1 fr sl both have nothing in the left leg, and from the oil table, both of them have 40ml of oil, so maybe that has something to do with it?

i remember at the time having a few issues with my fork, some things that didnt seem to add up, but all worked out well. it really became obvious when the forks were being stripped down.

ignore the first few sentances, utter rubbish. the rest of it might be of interest though

    think i used 7.5 and 150/ 170 for mine.
these were the instructions i used:
    http://www.enduroforkseals.com/id27.html
had to miss out some of the stages from step 15 onwards as didnt have the large socket. i assume yours will look similar inside?

    defaultslipper
    Free Member

just used a cloth and something that wouldnt scratch the insides.
the only bit i couldnt get out on mine were the bits at the very bottom of the lowers. im just trying to find the instructions i used to dismantle them so i can tell you what i couldnt remove. i found that the bolts on the very bottom of the forks needed a machined socket as none of my normal ones would fit over them, hence why i couldnt remove the very bottom bits.
but i left the lowers upside down to drain for most of a day, occassionally cycling them to remove most of the oil. i decided against using any fluids to wash out the oil as i figured i would then need to fihure out how to get rid of that, and if i dodnt then it would probably have reacted with the new oil when i refilled it.

does it make sense? will try and find the instructions i used, hold on a minute

    defaultslipper
    Free Member

i had the same on my 2004 z1 fr.
just stripped, cleaned and refilled (with a little less oil than was in them). the oil was lack and gloopy so came to the conclusion that the lack of clean oil was probably causing the noises.

back together now and the noise has magically disappeared and my forks are back to better working form.

Fantastic country. spent a month there around the north of the country, make sure you get out of lima quickly- the rest of what i saw was amazing, especially the cordilliera blanca. Just watch your stuff as it may go walkabout, and dont forget your jabs/ malaria tablets if you are hitting the rainforests.
and if you are a fan of irn bru, you are gonna love it's sister, inca cola- same taste, but bright yellow!

Agreed, nice video. and on some trails that i recognise, even if i only rode them once. do they still have that stump on the corner the guy is going round at the very end? my friends over there used to call it death corner for the fact you came up to it with a lot of speed and then had to scrub a lot to get round the stump.

although it must have taken you all year to get a dry day of filming in south wales!

ditto what nonsense said- also commented on the old man's ability to hold a friendly conversation.

i'd be demanding the money back or a new complete bike- either same model or something similar. As an ex- Halfords bloke myself (maybe i shouldnt admit that!) i know that they will try and keep you waiting for ages until you lose the will to fight it. And i bet they will give you the excuse that because it is over 6 weeks that you are not entitled to a refund.
Just ask for the manager or store manager and make sure they understand your position. Remind them thayt you have had problems from the start that are not from misuse or poor treatment. I wouldnt leave the store until you are satisfied with the outcome. if you keep going in you will probably talk to a different manager each time and they wont know the history of your complaint, so try and talk to the same person each time.

If you cant resolve it in-store, ask them for the customer services number and give them a call. If you can get someone helpful there, or better someone higher up the chain, then list your complaints. Before i left there was a new directive coming in to try and reduce the number of customer complaints directed at stores due to poor customer service. It meant that all the stores were told that they needed to sort out customer complaints in-store before they contacted customer services.

Hope it helps, and good luck!

there are lots of photos of the two of you together on holidays and generally having fun etc.

i didn't think facebook allowed you to add those photos?… 😉

But is she not in a similar position? Not sure i would want to meet up with a girl to find out she's got hundreds of photos of the last bloke she was going out with? I would probably be removing the photos if the were on my profile or asking whoever has put them up to remove them or at least de-tag me. Sure she will understand, you can always keep copies of your photos off-line if you want to keep a copy?

On Skye i think the Glen Brittle campsite is pretty good. It is a little bit further around than getting to Sligachan, but has a good view out to sea and of the Cuillins which, if you havn't seen before, are very imposing and definitely worth getting a good look at. At £5 pppn with free hot, clean showers, it was bargaintastic aswell. If you are a whiskey fan, then i think the Talisker distellery works out at less than 5miles away too. Can't really comment on the midge situation as we had a lot of wind while we were there- perfect to keep them away!

The Sligachan campsite looked very exposed when we went past last week, so not adviseable if you are expecting bad weather.

    defaultslipper

i did the sligachan route last week. had heard a few things from this forum- checek out this thread:

    http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/a-few-pics-from-the-sligachan-loop-last-week-its-no-half-bad-like

from what i could tell, the route works better in reverse if you want to do a circular route. But tbh it is probably better as an out and back from Sligachan.
We decided that the Strath Mor section sounded miserable so we went for the slightly longer Strath Beag path. However, after a short initial rideable section, the path soon became unrideable, with a 30-45 minute hike-a-bike. However, after this section, the riding was superb with only a few short hike-a-bike sections. I do not know how the Strath Beag path compares to the Strath Mor section, but it was pretty wet when we were there and so a boggy section didn't sound very enjoyable. The Strath Beag path was pretty solid for the most part. There is also a nice cafe once you return to the road with a friendly guy who seemed very keen to find out where we had been riding as he didn't know of any paths suitable for bikes!

The return leg on the circular route which i did was back through Glen Sligachan was awesome, and we felt that although you could have a good run coming the other way, it was probably more fun doing it the way we did it.

If you decide to do it the same way as talked about above (i.e. Strath Mor section at the end), you will be greated by a beasty road climb back to Sligachan Hotel which would possibly spoil what is otherwise a great route, and certainly among the most enjoyable i have done.

Let me know if i can be of any more help, could probably get a memory map route map for you, or failing that just a picture of the route we followed.

im glad it's not just me that is confused by this act. i will probably try contacting the CAB, but for the meantime think i will state on the safe side and mention it, but as suggested above state that it is for a motorway conviction at 80mph and hope they take pity!

cheers all for the advice. Back to the application forms!

    defaultslipper

Exact question for one application is:
'Have you ever been convicted of a criminal offence not treated as a spent conviction under the Rehabilitation of offenders's act 1974?' Under this description, i feel i don't need to say anything about speeding convictions.

However another application states that under the Rehabilitation Act:
'you are entitled to withhold information about any 'spent' convictions as per the details outlined on the previous page. All other convictions, including formal cautions, reprimands, driving convictions, convictions within the arned forces, convictions outside the UK must be included.'

It has all got me very confused. Are the above two examples the same, or does it come down to how it is worded? This help is greatly appreciated, as i can't find any useful info on the net.

monday, i was coming up oxlow rake, but i think it was a little later, maybe nearer 1. there were a few bikers going down over the limestone way (i think) heading south. only met one other biker going down cave dale, although he was struggling as much as me!

saturday i was up at ladybower reservoir (hope cross, aston familiar loop)

sunday was a 60km epic involving hope-ladybower-whinstone lee tor-cut gate-fairholmes visitor centre-road back to hope.

great weekend of sun, trails and beer. great to back out on some proper trails in good weather

ah yes i got quite a few gates opened for me by walkers/ other bikers. only had a few backchatting miserable walkers about riding bikes up the mam tor path, but generally got a good response from most of the people i passed.

but i always get the feeling the walkers all secretly crave a big crash as you go past them underneath the smiley exterior

yep really good fun. but then i like the little climb up mam tor off of the big paving slabs.

did it yesterday and combined with the cave dale descent. never done cave dale before, but that looks like a descent to try properly one day (ended up walking most of the last difficult section beyond the gate).

loads of people out in the peaks over the weekend, a little hectic in places!

the views do look pretty good on all those rides so will definitely have a look next time i am up there and the weather is good. im bringing some friends up in a few weeks but i think kirroughtree and drumlanrig may be on the cards. perhaps i might look at a shorter version of the drumlanrig ride you mentioned above, but will have to take a look at the map.

scotabroad, yep have walked the grey mare’s a few times so know about the steep drop; and family has always been local so also heard of quite a few serious/ fatal accidents down that way. will be taking care if i go there for sure.

cheers for the vast amounts of information, something to savour for when i return home!

cheers for the information, will have a look on the maps. how technical are the routes, or are they more scenic rides?

i am unfortunately not up that way at the moment, but will be back again in the summer. may have to take you up on that offer, and would also be interested in your alternative routing on the mabie red route.

and thanks again for the route advice- i hope it has been useful for the OP
