Don’t mean to hijack the thread, but trekster do you have a .gpx file of the durisdeer routes? i have done all the trail centres, and walked a fair amount in the hills around moffat (white coombe side though).

now that the parents have been up there for a few years i wouldn’t mind having a look up in those hills for some non-trail routes myself! last time i was up there i was thinking that the descent down grey mare’s tail might be well worth a go, but don’t know how i could bring it into a circular route, and without climbing up the same path that i want to descend.

richc, sorry for the slight hijack. but you have the right man on the thread (trekster) for the knowledge of the area!

just seen this- had my MK3 declared SORN a few weeks ago due to 3 pages of MOT problems- seems that the MOT centre found a page and a half worth of leaking (or corroded) brake pipes, along with other costly problems- there was a fair amount of duck tape on the boot by the end to keep it watertight!. can’t complain, got it free last year and it served me well.

anyway, have left it in scotland (while i am now in Norfolk)- i believe it had standard alloys on it, although can’t remember if they were 4 or 5 bolt. also don’t know if it has been sent to the scrappy yet (it was due to go soon), but if you’re interested then send me an email (a.pattinsonATuea.ac.uk) and i will find out any details you need. i can’t sort out any postage, but sure i could persuade someone to go on a short journey if you’re in the SW Scotland area?

thought it was a great car- had very little power, but still racked up close to 40mpg on an engine that was ticking away over 160k (1992 Mk3 1.4L), and regular trips up and down the country seemed to be causing few problems. think the only problems i ever encountered were the rusty tailgate (apparently quite common on golfs?); and a tempermental speedo, which i found discussed quite a bit on the web (think it was a golf forum or similar).
    Enjoy!

racing ralph, thanks for the offer but quite a way from the peaks.

snaps, cheers for the info- assuming you tried this for fox replacement bushings (and not the thinner bushings used on some other shock brands?). i think i understand the order, it’s kind of like a homemade version of the bushing replacement tools, and a little safer than simply trying to tease it out with a hammer!

found the one in stoney middleton:
    http://www.thedpc.co.uk/hut.html
but looks like you have to be a member of their club, although i think we were bmc affiliated. guess i wasn’t much help!

if you don’t mind paying a little extra then there is bushey heath farm:

i think there were three bunkhouses that slept between 4 and 8 people so you could rent a couple of them (one of them had a power shower) and when we stayed there last they gave us some fresh eggs off the farm. worked out at £15 pppn or £12.50 if you had more than 12. not sure if their proces have changed but good value for some posh bunkhouse accommodation. it’s a bit far from the local pubs though if that’s what you want?

if you are looking for cheap bunkhouses take a gander at fallcliffe cottage (outside heathersage) and there is a hut in Stoney Middleton opposite the Moon Inn. I’m sure one of them was BMC affilliated clubs/ groups only, but can’t remember which one.

Both can take 10-15 people with good catering and living space, and log fire for heating.

let me know if i can helps anymore.
