I would say it depends on the type of riding you want to do by the way – the Shan more biased towards DH / trail riding, the Slackline possibly a bit more of an all-rounder?

I had a Privee Shan in XL for a bit until I realised that I’m too old / crap to ride a hartail properly any more. Its was the business, looked amazing in the flesh, I can highly recommend one. Not light.

I have fiddled around and knocked the square root of naff-all off my bike see thread above! I am now down to 33.2lbs from 33.6lbs – I’ve got a lighter wheelset in the post and thats as far as I can go without going down the air forks route (no thanks).

Interesting – just shows how athletic the Pro DH’ers are these days and the force they put through the bike. I had a similar experience when I had a go on Fabien Barels enduro bike last year, really firm suspension, particularly the forks which he obviously was loading up far more than us average punters.

These frames are outrageous value second hand. Bomb proof and great fun.

I’d go for 50% new cost and see if you get any interest from there, I think you’d get a lot more interest with the CCBD than the Manitou shock.

I struggled to sell a 2006 Patriot frame in fairly good nick with the Manitou shock a year ago I got a bit under 400 for it in the end.

I trained for the Etape du Tour this year, and I do a similar amount of commuting to you by the sounds of it. I didn’t really do enough but by getting in some a couple of 2/3rds distance rides and doing some big climbs I managed to build up enough fitness to make it to the end. The advice on nutrition little and often same with fluids, I went mad on food at about 70km in and suffered there after.

Also sound advice above on the descents, they are big and when you are tired can get pretty hairy, I saw quite a few crashes and backed off a bit after hitting 70kms an hour in a few places with people overtaking me and me overtaking people. At that kind of speed braking late, clipping someone or hitting a pothole could really be disasterous.

But my one single biggest bit of advice would be to train your self to do a poo at 5am without fail.

Do you have ISCG 05 tabs? I have got a brand new MRP AMG I can sell you for a good price as I bought ISCG 05 when I needed ISCG…. der.

But better than that get a rear mech with a clutch, they are the business.

I always fancied a Sintesi Bazooka as well and I never managed to get one.

Don’t know – I could never afford one. I thought they had a tendency to crack but I could be wrong.

GT Lobo DH bike, the thermoplastic one, I used to lust after one in Evans by Waterloo Bridge. Silly money and broke if you rode it but it looked the nuts back in the day.

I have a 35mm Straighline stem on my trailbike – works a treat, on a XL Spec Enduro so super long reach frame.

Chapaking I live in the French Alps by the way – so the bike has to be pretty sturdy as any almost big ride will involve some serious DH at some point. Not to say that a good 140mm bike with a slack H/A and built sturdy wouldn’t cope quite well in most stuff but on the rougher DH it wouldn’t be as much fun.

Ha ha the 55’s are going nowhere, best fork I have ever used. If I can get under 33lbs I’ll be chuffed, as you say for a DH capable 7 in travel bike its not bad at all!

I have done a 70km each way commute over mountains a couple of times, its plenty doable on a roadbike but only once or twice a week. The main issue the time it takes. It would be quicker if it was all flat.

I regularly do 20km each way a day by driving the first bit and riding the slow trafficy bit where a bike is faster. Works a treat a keeps me fit. All year round, even in snow.

Ha ha yes I was not scientific in my approach, I just assumed anything with XTR on it or Lite in the name would be a bit lighter than what I already had 🙂 Any big weight saving would require serious money (Pikes) and its not worth for me when the stuff I already have works so bloomin well. I think the new wheels should a bit of a difference, along with lighter pedals. I will report back once all done!

Aiming for that magic 33lb barrier…

Interesting point on the Ice rotor, I assumed they would be light because they go with the XTR brakes but as you say maybe not. The bike is already 1 x 10

How very dare you call my lovely plush fork a fat old lump! 😆

Yes If I really wanted to save a massive amount of weight a set of the new Pikes would be great, but hey ho 🙂

    “that’ll save a massive 20 grams”

Basically I am going to make my bike look much lighter 😆

No earth shattering reason for the thread, just thought it was funny how little the weight moved.

I’m doing this because I may as well while I’m getting a few bits to enable the Freeride bike build, not because I’m a weight weenie, but its interesting just how little return you get by upgrading and also just how good the cheaper stuff like Deore is these days. Those 55’s are going nowhere but I know what you are saying, if I really wanted to drop weight I’d have to get some air forks but no way – the way the bike rides is the most important thing, not the weight 8)

I should add that the next steps are: XT cranks for the SLX cranks, lighter flat pedals, lighter wheel set (Arch vs Flow), lighter chain device (MRP AMG for a E13 LG1)

Can I break the 33 lb barrier and make the trail come alive?

Merlin Cycles not to bad at the moment – I just got some custom build hope / stans wheels for 340 posted.

Have a look at Montriond by Morzine, quick access via short bus ride to the Ardent lift station which takes up straight into the PDS via Linderets. Loads of options from there…

There is a major junction near the train station in Geneva that is a big 5 way crossroads, covered in tram lines that you have to cross at angles while cars motorbikes moped buses and trams cross lanes etc. In the wet and dark its a bit scary as if the lights are green I hit it going downhill at some speed as well….

After I broke my collar bone I became a lot more cautious in my riding and my “progression” but it was a long time ago and I am now a better faster rider than I used to be.

I recently broke an ankle snowboarding and was very nervous about the following season and how I would feel getting back on my board, but in practice I very quickly got back into it – but carry the learning of the incident in my head and try to avoid making the same mitake again.

I think you have to use it as a learning experience and then you’ll know very quickly once you get back on the horse if its still something you want to do as before.

The book made my skin crawl in places, the lead character is certainly one of the most unpleasant I’ve ever come across, but it was good. Not sure if I’d like to see the film version but it would be interesting to see how they handle it.
