It’s bullsh*t. Got one of these a few years back. A google search validated it as spam.

Currently running Purgatory 2.2 front, Ground control on rear. Just returned from CodYBrenin, and very impressed. Found the Ground control can slip out when really pushed, but controllable. Great on the rock gardens.

Run Maxxis Ardent 2.4s on the singlespeed. Great tire. Lethal on wet roots though.

Cant beat bonty mudX for surrey winter slush.

Rim wise, I found the Shimano 29er rim to be great, and well priced. Easily taking the 2.4 Ardents tubeless, on and off without tools. But frustratingly, no 135m QR (yet).
2nd bike has Crest ZTR 29ers, so far so good, but damned hard to load tyres. Would not like to have to do a trailside job. Took me best part of an hour and 2 broken levers before I managed to get them on.

Cant say I have had a genuine puncture in two years. I have had tires ‘burp’ after a hard landing, but nothing a quick blast of gas couldn’t fix. Wont go back to tubes.

Under conscription in the South African defence force, nicked a Samil 120 (big truck) to buy some cigs, caught a low hanging telephone wire, I thought it was a power line and panicked, and bailed out of the cab doing about 40mph. End result was pretty spectacular. Ripped out about 14 pylons before the cable snapped.

I bought one to go on a new build. Spent 4 weeks riding my usual trails, never touched it. Just got back from Coed Y B, where I used it constantly. Very useful piece of kit, when required..

I struggled too, with used and new rubber. Eventually got the new set on, (tubeless) all I can say is I hope I never have to do it on the trail. Right buggers to get on. They seem to have a bit of a reputation in this regard.

It’s a ‘Large’, 5’10” – 6’2″, and I also ride an on-one inbred 29er of similar size (see respective web sites for frame geo’s) I’m 5’9, and it feels right. I may lengthen the stem, but even then, it would be a case of a few mm.

The joy of every hill you get to, you geared mates will rush past you, and just as you approach the steep part of the climb, you will be in front, happily grunting away to the sounds behind of furious derailleurs getting mashed down to the respective granny rings as fast as those sweaty thumbs can press the levers. Glorious!

Well, promised an update on this, built up the Bandit 29er 3 weeks ago. Frame, fork and wheelset came from Kustom bikes (Somerset), very helpful they were too, and the rest comes from CRC/Wiggle. Its basically a full XT spec, 2×10 drivetrain.

I’ve been riding 29ers for the last 3 years, so no surprises there, but its my first full susser, so that’s taken a bit of getting used too. Given the 140 front and 130 rear travel, I am very pleased with its climbing abilities. The short stem makes it feel at bit cramped, but I’m getting used to it before making any changes. It really does well uphill, and I have managed to climb all my local surrey hills ‘nasties’ without concern. I’m used to riding single speed, and even getting out the saddle and mashing it, it behaves impeccably. Downhill its certainly is faster than my hardtail, its a point and shoot bike. I am still getting to grips with the rear shock, gradually upping the pressure, it feels a bit soggy, but given my inexperience on FS bikes, this might just be an transition (sorry :)) phase. Overall, very pleased, it’s fast and fun, and I think it looks the business. Long weekend in Wales coming up will give it a good test. My only complaint would be the ZTR Crests, getting the tires mounted was a bugger, hopefully the tubeless setup will mean I don’t have to go through that for the rest of the season. (Pic was taken before cable trimming, so excuse the birds nest up front!)

@Paceman, there are some risks, the weight difference might raise a flag on the system on your return, ideally you want to take a bag out with an old frame, dump it, and return with the new bike (I have done this with golf clubs in the past) Unfortunately, the logistics were against me, there were no bike dealers in the area I was heading too, and oddly, stock was even more limited than here in the UK.

I know many folks suggest it, but very few have done it.

Dropping down a favorite run a few weeks back, came round a corner with a back wheel lockup, surprising an elderly lady walking her dog. Preparing for the worst, I apologized profusely. Her response: “Often see you young men (I’m 38!) doing crazy things round these woods. Its so nice to see you boys outside doing something instead of playing silly games on telly!”

    Restored my faith in humankind..

BMI targets are aimed at people who basically do no exercise. If you built up even a moderate amount of muscle by cycling, or basically any form of exertion, you will never hit your BMI.

Running Shimano 29er rims, for around £300 a set, bargain. Ardent 2.4’s tubeless, no problems.

Yes, however, you might want to consider a half link chain. I have run the chain in question, and its done very well (South downs two weeks ago!) but it stretches like heck. Half link has given me the right amount of adjustment, with less sttrreecchh!

In anticipation of hot date, boy goes to pharmacy and asks the guy behind the counter for a large pack of condoms, with a big grin on his face. On date night, he’s invited in for dinner with the family. Before eating, he gets asked to say grace. After some time with heads bowed, girl leans over and whispers “I didn’t know you were so religious..” at which the boy replies “I didn’t know your father was a pharmacist..”

mm. The Quantas A380 is nice. (I flew in premium economy, or the equivalent) and it was great. Not as good as Singapore, but better than BA (mind you BA Club class is hard to beat) I clip around 500k miles a year with BA for what its worth.

I did a gradual upgrade to SS. I’m not convinced that 26ers are best suited to SS. The 29er offsets a significant amount of effort, and I went with an Alfine for a while, but I did not like the slightly ‘disconnected’ feel from the drivechain. Went to a 32/16 with a straight forward conversion kit. Around the surrey hills, there’s not much I cant climb. What makes it for me? Steel frame, 29er, light wheelset, decent fork and some small bar ends help when you need to get out the saddle.

Chain guide is a must. I have a standard long cage mech, and it works fine, but it bounces around on the rough stuff. I run a 36×9 (just left the big ring on a standard XT crankset)and it works great.

I do a lot of work related long-haul travel. having tried numerous NC headphones, I eventually stumped up the cash for the Bose unit. Honestly say it was money well spent. A few weeks later I bought the Sound-dock for home.

Yeah, its probably a bit over priced, and the hidden RRP is a marketing gimmick, but its still quality kit.

456 SS, rode it, hated it. Spent a few weeks staring at it, then splashed some cash on the spec, and now its fantastic.

Proves bad components can ruin a good frame.

Mind you, have a Pompino ss, with a flip-flop hub. Its going on ebay real soon. Its just not fun..

Did it this year, started around 09h30, finished around 5. Plenty of time, even with a decent lunch stop. Great day, very well organised. Pretty exhausted by the end of it though, but nothing a good meal and beer couldn’t fix! As for those ‘missed runs’, that’s what the next days for..

Makes sense. Looking at it again, it looks like that ring might be pushed around anti-clockwise, with the screw holding it in place, may well pull the mech back. Ill give it a try. Thanks.

I took my dad to the mall the other day to buy some new shoes (he is 66).

We decided to grab a bite at the food court.

I noticed he was watching a teenager sitting next to him.

The teenager had spiked hair in all different colors – green, red,
    orange, and blue.

My dad kept staring at her.

The teenager kept looking and would find my dad staring every time.

When the teenager had had enough, she sarcastically asked:
“What’s the matter old man, never done anything wild in your life?”

Knowing my Dad, I quickly swallowed my food so that I would not
choke on his response; I knew he would have a good one!

In classic style he responded without batting an eyelid ….

“Got stoned once and had sex with a parrot. I was just wondering if
    you might be my kid.”

While I’m biased (having 3 OO bikes in the shed) its great to see designers come out on an open forum like this to share thoughts and ideas. How often do you get that opportunity? Keep up the great work Brant. You can only please some of the people some of the time..
