Hot and dusty Afan W2 on Saturday, followed by an even hotter Sunday spin round White’s level. Almost perfect weekend, except for Midgeapocalypse in the camp site Sat night.

Most companies will pay based on the individual. The advertised rate is typically a ‘book’ price (HR band or grade the role or title not the job, and its always the lower part of the scale)

Kick in plus 5k an the top number. You can only negotiate down. Never up.

I’m not familiar with public sector payment. But after the 1st year in the job, its not unreasonable to expect a 1% to 3% payrise. At minimum to keep up with inflation. It’s a perfectly reasonable question to ask at the interview. Good Luck!

Ha, reminds me of a mate with homemade bike-lights, and battery. Down the hill we go, he swallows a fly, gagging, takes a mouthful of water (still on the go) spits it out on the exposed wires from the light battery, battery shorts out, plunged in darkness, plunged in large hedge.

See, flies can cause grievous bodily harm.

I have just had the same problem, after replacing the rear mech. My LBS took a look, replaced the cables and outers. Sorted.

Its not that I don’t like it (they are great tires) but I am (mildly) concerned that a) I might be stressing the rim b) I am not really getting the full benefit from the tire profile.

Not an issue on the usual hack, but heading to a trailcenter where it might be more noticeable.

Thanks. Might go back to the 2.2f and 2.1 rear.

I flew to the wrong country for a business meeting. Only realized when I was reviewing the notes on the plane. Ended up in HK, should have been in Singapore. :?

While I agree it’s not the technical riding, its when you start getting tired. It’s a boatload of downhill, and many are not used to doing that amount of up-out-the-saddle. You get tired, you make mistakes.

I just looked at where most of my bike related scars where, and went for covering those. (knee pads!)

There is some truth in bedding in pads, however, given the new technology and materials used these days, is far less important. I suspect the difference in feel most experience during those initial stops is caused by the clearance of grease and other crap on the pad surface, and the pistons / pads getting nicely aligned.

I don’t see shimano or avid proclaiming 20 to 50 stops before effective use on their documentation. I did maybe 3 or 4 strong pulls on my new XT pads, and they made it through winter, and still going strong.

@ DezB, thanks for that. The coco baby chimp may actually keep me awake tonight. 8O

Urk, just spent 70 quid on the XT version. The 10 sp cassettes are pricy, and then, may as well change the front, that’s close to 300 odd quid for the full drivetrain. Yeesh.

I’m learning the hard way here. Been on a SS steel framed inbred for years, can’t say I spent more than 20 quid a year on that. Now this FS is costing me a pretty penny.

Given budget constraints  I have gone for a new mech, and chain. Looking again, the cassette looks in pretty good nic, but the derailleur is a mess, when compared to a new one, all the teeth are sharp shark fins.

I have been thinking about how this happened. Just taken a small 1ft drop off, and as I landed, the derailleur got ripped up. I suspect the bounce, let the gubbins get sucked up.

I’m hoping a new clutch mech is going to help. So the drivetrain is a year old, and through a surrey winter, around 800 miles, but I clean and lube regularly, so I feel the crankset and rings should still be good. Have to admit, I could have paid more attention to looking after the mech. Note to self.

Got chatting to a lovely Asian lass in Vegas airport, until her husband turned up (Nicolas Cage). Literally bumped into Paris Hilton outside LAX once. She scowled at me. Result! Met and shook hands with Nelson Mandela in my army days, we chatted about the weather!

What irks me is the amount of ‘professional’ drivers (people who drive for a living) seem to be regular perpetrators. I appreciate the need to make / get calls, but (as mentioned) get a handsfree, or how about letting the other 3 guys squeezed in the front cab take the call for you? Don’t get it.

I do a lot of long haul. Splashed out on Bose quietcomfort. I wear them for 11 hours at a time, an the single AAA battery lasts for 2 or three round trips to SFO. Highly recommend, but they are a bit pricey.

Shimano XT 29er rims on my SS. Well priced, and pretty light, and runs tubeless easily. But you will need a center lock rotor.

I have these. Strapped on some rim tape (blue?) popped on the tyres, poured in some Stans. Job done. Oh, and yes, you’ll need the stem!

Fitting summer tyres (tubeless) sweating to get inflation with crappy floor pump.
Front was on the rear, rear was on the front, rotation wrong on both counts. And worst of all, logos misaligned! Yeesh.

Oh, and Lefty loosey, righty tighty does not apply when bike is upside down.

I’m so fed up with drugs in cycling. They might as well just let them all do it, and then test for those who are clean, and kick them out instead.

Just a slight correction to what Fatgit said above – the Transition Covert 29 is 140mm travel front and rear, not 130mm, and is a brilliant bike – but i’m a bit biased.

This is true, but Fatgit was referring to the 2012 Transition Bandit 29er, which is indeed 140f 130r. The Covert 29 is 140/140.

Hey Fatgit, I’ve got a bandit 29 too! (Green). Just a bloody marvelous bike.

Like when you ignore the shop assistance advise on a pair of jeans, and opt for the cheaper pair (they were all nicely folded), she watches me bemused as I head to the changing rooms, once in, I realize I have chosen a denim skirt.
