    So how come there are options for a 6″ PM 203, 7″ PM 203 and 8″ PM 203 (and 6 & 7 PM 180s)? I’m maybe missing something

Just got the new SKF seals fitted to Float 32s by Pedals in Edinburgh. Not ridden them yet but a big thumbs up to James in there for top class service.

No word from Nicolai for a week until I prodded them. They replied asking did I want a price for a basic get-you-back-on-the-trail repair or the full kahuna. I said give me both and then I can decide how far to go.

That was 10 days ago and no reply – guess they are all at Eurobike. :?

Yep I can echo a lot of the comments here – great kit but cack dealer support. Dealing direct gets better results and I’ve had 2 sets of fork lowers replaced for nowt on warranty.

Edinburgh main dealer is useless – email and phone messages not replied to etc meaning I’ve had to deal direct which is hard work but when it works it works well. Harder work than it should be.

Spent a week there several summers ago – beautiful place. Walking is excellent but fairly hardcore – glaciers high up and no camping/biking. Similar but nicer (imo) is further south in the Queyras. Google Ceillac. Very unspoilt part of the Alps if walking is what you’re looking for.

I would Crop both top and bottom, boost contrast, sharpen, increase blacks to darken the picture, add graduated filter to the sky. Quick 2 minute shuffle does this.

Good pic though – has atmosphere which can be brought out with some post production.

Na – nor could I give a shit.

Am annoyed about wasting taxpayers’ money though.

    It’s a complete f’ing shambles.

Edinburgh is, generally, a city to be genuinely proud of. It’s a great place to live (as cities go). However this is becoming (sorry – has become) a massive embarrassment.

What amazes me though is that everyone just kind of shrugs and moans about the trams – we should be marching on the Council HQ protesting about them pissing our money away. Instead we just let them get on with it. Weird.

There are a hundred issues with the nation that need addressing well before the typical Royal Bashing.

I’m no royalist fanboy, but this is the most sense I’ve read in 3 pages.

All fair comments above – 2 weeks in the Alps was a lot of riding true, but given I was there with wife and 4 y.o. child it’s not like I was riding the Passeportes 14 times in succession! I’m still surprised it disintegrated to that extent which again makes me think it started out in poor nick.

I’m not really willing to name and shame as I’m going to have a chat with them but someone earlier in the thread has already.

i’d kind of side with Nicolai as the damage looks due to neglect to maintanance

    hard to argue I admit.

Hopefully Nicolai come back with a favourable price for the repair

    fingers and toes all crossed.

Can you use what Nikolai siad to get a bit of recompense from the dealer?

I could try but how can I prove I’ve only ridden it 20 odd times? They could say that for all they know I could’ve been razzing it 6 days a week in axle deep mud. Chalk it up to experience and as you say look harder next time!

Well – an update as I’ve heard back from Nicolai today.

It would appear that my frame is properly and definitely FUBAR. And as it was ridden while damaged, (thus potentially making the problem worse) they have thrown out my warranty claim.

I can’t believe that I caused this damage (unless the frame is made of cheese which it certainly isn’t) given the handful of times I rode the bike. I can only assume therefore that it had had a much harder life as a hire bike than I was led to believe when I bought it.

Alternatively the bike IS a dud one from the factory and the issue lies with Nicolai but I can’t see how I can prove that.

A total pi$$er. They are going to give me a quote to repair the damage which I can only assume is going to make my eyes water. We should have a sweep – guesstimate how much it’s going to cost me!

So that is going to make my ex-hire bike “bargain” a bit less of a bargain. Wish I’d just stumped up and bought a brand new one instead of being a cheapskate and trying to save a few quid.

Moral of the story. Don’t take anyone’s word for it when they tell you that the ex-hire bike has only been out 26 times and has been fully serviced each time etc etc unless you open the pivots/strip the forks and check it all out yourself.

I’m not Nicolai bashing BTW (just bought another CC frame from here) but I would agree with posts above that lack of maintenance is the issue – but not my lack of maintenance – lack before I bought it unfortunately.

Still – we’ll see what price they come up with!

OMIGOD – the Technical Lego forklift. That has nearly brought a tear to my eye! I had exactly the same one c.1979. Still in the box at my mum’s house. I used to love it to bits. I’m tempted to get it back from her now. Real wave of nostalgia looking at that picture – I can visualise in my head how the steering works and everything.

Got one of these Linky on Amazon for £45 a couple of days ago – although I see they are up to £84 today? They were £76 last week – wild fluctuations in price – but I was obviously lucky. So maybe worth keeping an eye on a couple in Amazon and see where prices go.

……or just set myself up for twice the heartache?

I don’t think so – the one I have left keeps me sane – and I’ll start to shop around one day so he has a friend in his older days. I can’t imagine life without a dog – when I visit a house without a dog, no matter what is happening and how much life there is about their house (kids/fun/friendship) it always seems somehow empty without a dog.

Don’t have a link sorry, but my old dog died in May (still have the younger one although he’s 10 so getting on as well), and there’s barely a day goes past when I don’t “get something in my eye.”

    Almost broke me TBH.

Despite the thread title, I’ve ordered a Cannondale – thanks to dtaylforth for the heads up there. Bit of cheeky testing at AN Other bike shop (£300 dearer) and deal done.

Have a Cannondale tourer that I love lots so looking forward to it.

Now, if only it would stop raining sometime this month!

Had exactly the same dilemma (east vs west) 5 years ago and bought a house (jointly with a friend) near Glencoe. Don’t regret it for a moment, although I do have some sympathy with comments above – we do find ourselves going there a lot but there is everything on our doorstep and it is great being able to leave kit over there and just drive up there. No hassles packing or thinking about where to stay. So we find we go away a lot more than we used to because it is so easy. still head away camping to other places regularly though.

We rent out just over the summer so we have it to ourselves the rest of the year but if we wanted we could easily rent it more- the holiday Market is definitely there.

And as for Fort Bill – it has everything you need and the outdoor scene is tip top. Don’t go there to sound time in the town anyway. What swung it for us is that we are into sea kayaking too and that ain’t so handy to Aviemore. Great too with young kids being able to just get in the car and go. They love it over there.

Aviemore is great too though. I’m there once a fortnight or so on business and several friends have houses there or close by. The forests around Rothiemurchus are superb.

I’m a fan, and of the ones I’ve tried over the last couple of years

1 Gobi – great – seems to work well on HT bike with that little bit of flex it has. Creaks like a creaky thing. Costs a small fortune.
2 Spesh Body Geometry – horrible – tried to like it but now in the bin. Hateful thing.
3 Spoon – run 2 of these and I get on well with them. Nice fit for me and the bonus is that at £25 you can’t go far wrong.

Looks like it’s got very slack

I certainly have never been aware of it being slack – at least during my period of ownership – and have always kept the pivots tight. But then again I’m no pivot expert!

What Taki says – Forks work fine so I’ll give them a bit of wet n dry and nail polish and keep on riding – once I have a frame to attach them to! I’ve certainly never used a jet wash on my bike, but I know hire places do, so maybe that is the root of the problem.

Well, can’t fault Nicolai on their speed of response – emailed at about 7pm last night and I had a nice reply before midnight!

They can’t tell from photos what caused it or if it is a warranty job or poor maintenance or poor setup or whatever – so I’ve got to pack it off to Germany and we’ll see what the boys at Nicolai HQ say.

On the forks – yes as others say above I’ll have to live with them, but as they’ve been only been ridden maybe 20 times since they came back from the Magura service guys (and maybe 50 outings in total) I’d be surprised if lack of maintenance is the cause. But as I have no original receipt, I’ve no option to go for warranty – at least with the Nicolai they will consider the warranty claim.
