Further Garmin geocaching info which has just been released – going to make Garmin more and more the standard for geocaching.

    QUOTE

Garmin has just lifted geocaching further into the tech geek real with the new Chirp. The Chirp is a small wireless beacon that can be programmed with loads of data to help geocachers on their quest to find a particular cache or set of caches.

Tiny, durable and waterproof, the Garmin Chirp wireless beacon can be programmed by and communicate with any compatible wireless enabled Garmin handheld GPS ( Oregon, Dakota, GPSMAP series). The Chirp stores data such as cache hints, multi-cache coordinates, and the number of visitors to the cache.

Next time you are out geocaching and you get within 10m of a cache housing the wireless beacon, you will get a message that the cache is nearby and that a Chirp has been detected. You can instantly download the Chirp data which will include the coordinates of the owner’s next cache in a multi-cache situation.

The Garmin Chirp is password protected so only the cache or Chirp owner can load or edit information onto the wireless beacon. The CR2032 lithium coin cell battery will last for up to one year of continuous use and can be easily replaced.

Since Chirp is exclusive to Garmin, there has been some debate over whether or not Geocaching.com will accept the Chirp as legit. As of yesterday however, Geocaching.com now shows a wireless beacon option under the Equipment (Required/Not Required) cache information column.

I would love to eventually see wireless beacons work with more than just the Garmin handheld GPS. Your own handheld GPS could log you in to a cache with your identifier as well as check in or out different trackables. No more water soaked logs or forgetting to bring a pen with you!

The Garmin Chirp retails for $22.99 from the Garmin website or a bargain $19.95 from REI.

Ride a Ridgline LT which is awesome. Also have spesh fsr full suss. If I’m ridiing more than a few hours, i actually tend to ride the lynskey – the full suss is more comfortable for sure at trail centres etc but if you’re trying to cover ground, I find the bobbing etc of full suss wearing over time. Multiply that over 24 hours.

Tough decision, but I doubt I would go out and buy one on the basis of one race. Needs to be something you truly want IMO.

Good work. I’m 10.5 kg down but it has taken me 2 months of low effort. Trick is to keep it off!

I only have one bike in the bedroom, but I do have 2 dogs sleeping in there too. Mrs made me tidy away the toolbox earlier this evening though.

Well pick some up then, when i got to the clwyds, theres a few bottles crisp packetsa and mcdougal burger boxes, so i just get a bin bag and pick them up, put them in the bag and dump them at home.

    See its so easy.

Agreed, and I do, but that is not the point. They shouldn’t be dropping it in the first place. You, or I, picking it up doesn’t sort it as you seem to think. In fact if anything it reinforces the idea that “I can drop this crap here and some other idiot will clear it up”.

I’ve ranted about this in the past too – bastards. Was at Glentress again Wed night and this week’s litterfest was mainly Strathmore water bottles – I must’ve seen 15/20 bottles on my way round – I cannot believe that punters just sling these bottles at their arses.

Spent a lot of the ride fantasising about lying in the woods wearing a full ghillie suit and using a high powered rifle to take out all littering bastards the second they drop something.

Faded away from biking – mountain biking in particular – for about 10 years. Got into other things – kayaking, dogs, photography, motorbikes, getting married – but my trusty Klein stayed in the shed and I dusted it down 3 years ago and got back into it in a big way.

Now more passionate about it than ever. No doubt it will fade again when something else comes along but I know it will always be there.

Why not just buy a Lynskey, rather than Cotic/Ragley which are made by Lynskey anyway?

My (completely unfounded) suspicion is that they put their own name on the best kit they produce.

yay – this is great craic!

I’m trading up from Enduro Maxx to LL3 for handlebars and from L&M Arc to Diablo for the helmet – so I’ll be able to tell you the whole story when my LL3 arrives!

If Defender has less than 45,000 miles on it then in effect it is Carbon Neutral as Land Rover make environmental contributions to cover the CO2 emissions.

    See here[/url]

Bit of a sop to the environmental lobby I suspect but it does exist.

Apparently 25,000 men are killed in mining incidents each year around the world

75 a day? Really? How come we don’t hear about all this carnage? Have you maybe got the numbers a little wrong?

True – according the the Federation of Mineworkers in Radio 4 last night. 15,000 a year they reckon in China alone.

Similar – I have a prism in one of my glass lenses as I have slight double vision following an assault on Princes Street 10 years ago (another story) but these lenses correct the double vision. But of course in the interim my eyes have become used to correcting it on their own. So when I first put these glasses on I could barely walk down the street. Went back to optician and got the same story you got.

Within a couple of days I was used to it and now (6 months) they are a godsend. I can still operate with contacts etc for biking but the brain does compensate although YMMV.

Satmap great but the winner for me (which is why I went for the Garmin) are the inbuilt Geocaching features – none of which exist on the Satmap etc. Sure you can do it but it just works best on the Garmins.

If you’re not into Geocaching, then not an issue.

I haven’t tried the new Safari with the OS mapping, but they had major problems getting the OS mapping to work on it about a year ago – I take it now sorted?

I always found the Lowrance interface poor (as with Magellan) but depends what you’re used to I guess.

Garmin Oregon 450t – used extensively at home and abroad. Brilliant piece of kit.

I’ve had 8/9 GPSs over the years and this is the best by a long chalk.

Currently use an Edge 305 for the bike for comparing ride times etc, but the Oregon is in a different class altogether.

Again, none of the naysayers have obviously driven a 2007 onwards vehicle like mine. Cruises at 75-80 no problem. Has pretty good mid range acceleration for overtaking. Noise levels are reasonable – can hold a conversation at speed which was not easy in a pre-07 vehicle. No rattles. Not a single issue at all in 3 years.

OK, it is not as comfortable as a nice new modern car, but they are not as compromised as they once were. Old ones have a lot of downsides for sure!

Not so much about best as that is a very subjective thing. It is all the things you say for sure (although as i say new ones are a big improvement but far from modern car standards). But it also has personality. Most Defender drivers wave to each other on the road. No other drivers (apart from VW campers!) do that afaik. Like singlespeed, or 29, or riding fully rigid. A lot of people say “why? Makes no sense” but for those who are into it, it is the way forward. There is more to them than “which is best” – they have some soul about them.

A 5 year old passat estate is cheaper, more reliable, carries nearly as much, is more comfortable, burns less diesel, holds its value better, doesn’t rust, goes faster, is quieter etc etc. Would I swap my defender for one? Would I ****!
