it’s up steep steps from Portpatrick, then ride along the clifftop path and then down to Sandeel Bay then it’s hike a bike and some rock climbing with said bike and then a wee cycle along a well worn path to Killantringan lighthouse, onto tarmac for a wee spell and then onto farm tracks and fields over to Knockquhassen Reservoir, back onto farm road and downhill on tarmac to the Galla hill.. more farm tracks and tarmac over to New Luce….. after that I have no idea, as that’s the only parts I attempted…. LOL

Hi Daern… I was at kirrie last week… complete nightmare with the fallen trees, would guesstimate it’s gonna take weeks to get the trails fully open… you can always give the folks down at thebreakpad a call  01671 401303 as they will be able to give you more info…

    yeah… SUCCESS …..

just to let ya know that I have now got the 1×10 system up and running, turned out to be a spacer on the deraileur axle bolt was refitted to the wrong side of the mounting bracket (was like that when I purchased the unit from a mate of mine and he never informed me), I only discovered the error at 4.30am this morning… sitting at my computer looking at a schematic of the deraileur and checking that all things were in the correct place on the actual unit, all working fine and dandy…..thanks for all the help and advice, it’s very much appreciated 🙂

    cheers

why oh why did Shimano go and **** around with a design that has been around since the early 1950’s…..LOL… my head is fit to burst with all the info that I have been trying to absorb on the subject….. I doubt very much that Rocky Mountain will have manufactured a mech hanger for use with the new DRD mechs for a 2003 model frame.

so, what are my options on trying to setup a 1×10 on the old steel HT……do Shimano still manufacture standard mount 10 spd rear deraileurs?, should I go to more expense and move over to SRAM parts (as I believe they haven’t adopted the new DRD system?), or should I stick with tried and tested 9 speed parts (no doubt Shimano have buggered about with that system as well…..LOL) decisions ,decisions….. :-O

So, what you are saying is that my 2009  9 speed xt mech is a standard mount and thats why it works fine on the steel ht?

The Slx mech is a shadow mech and not a shadow plus that I originally stated in my initial post……

hangar alignment is spot on, no issues with a 9 speed system when I fitted the parts to the steel hard tail for testing….

I am sure that the chain was on the smallest cog before the cable was attached, I triple checked both upper/lower limit screws, the high limit screw made no viable adjustment difference to the deraileur, I was able to move the deraileur by hand up to the lowest cog….no problems there.

I nipped up the gear cable (without adding tension to it before tightening up with the pinch plate), and that is when the chain was rattling and jumped down to the next largest cog.

I may try adding a few links back to the chain to see if that will ease some tension from the deraileur…or it could be that the deraileur is goosed…..

it’s done my head in for sure….silly of me thinking it would just be a simple case of fitting and setting up and bob’s yer uncle…..

The 9 speed parts worked fine, no hassles at all….. I know that the 10 speed parts came of a friends bike and they had very light use….10 speed chain was bought brand new..

    methinks I’ll stick to 9 speed…. 🙂

    FFS……is nowt simple nowadays……LOL…

all cables and outers are brand new, looks like I will need to purchase a spacer and a bracket…….or stick to a bloody 9 speed system…..LMAO…

    cheers for the replies…. much appreciated…. 🙂

thought the spacer was just for coming from an 11 spd down to a 10 spd???
