You know my mechanical curse and even I didn't attempt any brake work without Timmy on hand to oversee / provide the right tools (cordless impact wrench is awesome)/ They are in reality very simple, but the consequences of screwing up your bikes brakes and the cars are vastly different.

I've got a problem with my ADSL line and have done for months. Last Sunday morning i recorded a 10KBPS download speed for my line!

Bt are on the case but sadly going round in circles at the moment. I've had an engineer out twice and he says the line is fine (getting a healthy 6000-7150 KBPS theoretical max)but something in BT land is falling on its @rse. apparently i'm on the 21CN too, so it should be better than it is. Not happy.

However, the Bt engineer did fit a new front plate to the master socket and I did notice the therotecical max going from 6-7.1 Mb so I think the iplate will make a difference in most cases.

is there a CD in the drive? sometimes machines are set to boot from CD / USB before the hard drive so if there is a disc or USB stick in the machine it wont boot properly.

has everyone forgotten how most of the stuff we buy gets moved around the country? most of the goods in most shops are delivered by trucks and vans – an increase in fuel duty would push their costs up, pushing the cost of goods up in turn. so even the poor people with no car would end up paying for increased fuel duty.

I've been having slow connection with Eclipse now for over a month. Its doing my nut in but have only just got them to engage BT. Its a nightmare, but its worth checking all your kit out thoroughly to make sure the faulkt isn't at your end (otherwise you'll look like a plum and they might well charge for a BT visit)

replace ADSL filters (apparently they degrade over time)
remove telephone extensions / sources of interference
change modem / router if possible.
ensure laptop / pc runs ok on another bb connection
do a quiet line test to listen for cracking and popping on the line (dial 17070)
unplug all other connections and ensure router / modem is on the master socket.

i've just had the last uplift weekend at Fort William ruined because of these sh!tey Phenolic pistons in my juicy 7. Basically the central locator snapped off and the pads kept dropping through the brake. Granted it did snap off because of Screwdriver use to push pads apart (incidentally why has no-one made a tool for this) but I thought the "pad retainer" might have saved the day. Well, it cost £2.99 and does **** all – didn't hold the pads in either.

The pistons themselves are cheap (well they used to be about 4.99) and you can break the caliper and do it yourself – takes a few hours and a bit of patience to bleed but results are good. TBH if an LBS charged me £70 for a brake service i'd just buy a new one – Shimano SLX for £60 from CRC right now.

If the piston is chipped it depends how bad it is – mine no longer have a smooth edge but still work ok.

i'm just gonna drive everywhere and get heart disease just to prove the point.

this is madness, not to mention completely unenforcable. registration plates for bikes? they'd better have the SORN equivalent for off-road only….
