No, getting hammered by GT3's. Boxter drivers were all walking their poodles in the car park

I'll be telling my Grandchildren I drove a Wankel, couldn't really go through my car owning career without ticking that box. It bloody flew round the Nurburgring.

Doubt you'll sit little Johnny on your knee and say "Lad, let me tell you about the time I owned a [insert insipid front wheel drive pile of crap here]" :-)

When bought from a showroom, you get the Mazda quick start pack which includes the cold start/stop procedure.

Yes seriously. All you do is bring the engine up to 5k hold for a few seconds and switch off. Older engines are more prone, they upgraded the starter motor and ECU on newer models. Mine is a 2007 192 Nemesis, never flooded it at all even moving it a few yds up the drive.

What scared me off the RX8 was the 'you cant run them down to the shops/turn off whilst still cold'.

Absolute bollocks. You just hold it at high revs for a few seconds then switch off. Been doing it in mine for years.

I think the RX8 is more geek than gay. Boxter is 200% gay.

Only "gays and girls drive them"

Usually the one's with the greatest appreciation of style, so probably accurate.

I think I say a diesel punto in my rear view mirror once, couldn't quite see enough detail to be sure?

I looked at both and decided against the RX8 because it just isn't as nimble, balanced, nice to drive as the MX5, and the fuel economy is shocking!

I looked at both, realised I could only get a few cans of hairspray in the MX5 and chose the RX8 instead.

You will struggle as they are fantastic cars that handle brilliantly and don't cost much. The RX8 is a drivers car the MX5/Boxters/Z4 are the hairdressers cars. Oil and MPG are the main complaints..however we all know that any front wheel drive car is a FAIL don't we.

I couldn't possibly own up to owning one.

I have my grandfathers pocket watch which was given to him by soldiers who he helped, it's got a nice inscription on the back.

Did you keep it up your ass?

    (hopefully you get the joke)

The letter is signed "A. Nutt"

I think you may be struggling on the old libel front seeing as half of Swindon could claim that moniker

“If you were alright for only a few seconds before you got walloped by the wave, did you not get a look at the sets coming in beforehand? “

This is where I do think we went wrong. We got down there and got straight in without looking at the sets and assessing worst case, the instructors seemed happy to get right in. My problem was that I was swimming into the toilet, so could not see what was coming or prepare for it. If I did it again I would definitely try to be more aware of what is about to happen, experience gives you that!! To let you know how bad it was, my shorts were ripped off and lost in the incident.

Re-reading my OP it is a bit negative I suppose. I was pretty shocked with how close we came and I guess that is unusual. Funny thing is, in the pub the night before we were all worried it would be too tame and HSE controlled!!!!!!!

“I’m guessing you haven’t spent that much time in the sea, hey? It can be quite a powerful animal if you’re not expecting it.”

Grew up in Padstow North Cornwall, Advanced level trained diver 30+ logged UK shore dives. Friend is a SETT trained free diver. Believe me I know when it is nearly all over, and both of us sat covered in blood recovering and agreed we had nearly died.

I definitely agree with that mate, we will talk about this for years! and we were all dead chuffed to not bottle the high jump at the end.

It was neither, the firm is a new one I think (Celtic..?), can’t remember the name as a mate organised it. To be fair I do think our experience was a total one off and we were unlucky.

As regards holding your breath, yes you can do minutes..when you are prepared for it. We were suddenly under water and had no time to take a breath, under those conditions when you are panicking to get to the surface you have seconds.

My coach told me to never do through and off in a race but just hang in and rest until the finish!

    Sort of correct.

Wind direction is a factor and you change sides based upon the prevailing wind.

Really you should not drop back, the riders should be coming through and a rider will pull over and shelter you and then slow down a tad (as they were going faster to come through), your shelter then increases as more riders come in front of you. The last man going past you should call “Last man” and then you follow him back up the chain to take your turn.

In races it is totally different. The above is co-operative through and off. In races you may do this, but may also try to gap riders by accelerating off the front, or dropping back and then bridging. Breakaways may work co-operatively as may chasing bunches. My coach told me to never do through and off in a race but just hang in and rest until the finish!

    Have an exit strategy.

    Don’t gamble relationships on it.

Always plan what you are going to do next.

Don’t read any management books or go on any courses.

    Keyboard IS an issue

It took me ages to be able to type # in XP running under parallels
    Also, try typing cntrl-alt-delete…

For sure there are workarounds, but it is not 100% straightforward. I know as I write code on the Mac.

But, Macbooks are ace bits of kit and I’d buy another

Best every NMA gig for me was Brockwell Park at the GLC benefit when they totally upstaged the Damned (IMHO). One of our local lads, Moose, joined them as bass player for a while. I blagged into a few sold out gigs on that fact for a few years by saying I used to be in “Into the Greylight” his old mates band.

    Blyth Power anyone?
