I’m feeling a little sad today.

I was on the first Course of pilots trained on the C130J, flying them brand new, with only delivery mileage. Then the  first C130J Co-pilot upgraded to Captain, and when I left the RAF, had the most C130J hours in the world!!!

I was also the first RAF pilot to fly all 5 Mks of C130 – not many of us flew the W2 version (Snoopy, the meteorological research version)”

You probably know my dad Colin Barter (RIP) he captained Snoopy in his final tour and was a highly distinguished C130 pilot. I will check his log books to see if he managed all 5 Mks.

OP if this is your dream then make it happen. I walked out of a highly paid job to become an author. Never managed to make a proper career out of it but if I hadn’t made the leap I wouldn’t have the brilliant life I have now. Loads of good advice here…but if it’s nagging at you then crack on

I read The Times every day. I believe it is important to challenge your own politics rather than constantly reinforce.

have every part of their thinking be overridden and influenced by someone else

This is down to the individual not the reading matter.

We use Freeagent in our business and the charity I am a trustee of uses Xero. I prefer Freeagent, we file PAYE/CT/VAT from it directly and it produces our annual accounts. Costs us £28 a month.

I recommend an online product as they are often updated quicker and can be used on multiple devices.

Not having a dig, just curious – what did you think living in a seaside town was going to be like in the summer?

Like all the previous summers…… But This one has been extraordinary. I can’t put my finger on it but litter so much worse, larger crowds and more antisocial behaviour. We normally get it in school holidays but it is near constant. My neighbour has just died and I’m sure his house will become yet another holiday let moving our street into minority resident owned.

On a recent walking holiday I drove past a house near Drumbeg with a sign in the window.

    “Go Home! Ban the NC500”

I felt terrible and wasn’t even doing it. I can sympathise living in a seaside town which has been hell since May.

Maybe if a few of us stayed away it would help?

    Yes.

    It never arrived.

Weeks and weeks of excuses, supposed problems that needed sorting all sorts of lies and bullshit

Eventually I got a full refund and £300 compensation

I would not touch with a barge pole if you want your car on time and as described.

It’s only a toast, not a eulogy, and I loved my dad so there’s no specific reason I don’t want to do it other than emotional. It’s just making me realise I’m not over his death yet.

My brother did my Dad’s and welled up halfway through. It made it tens times better. Don’t be afraid to show emotion.

You learn to read the riders in front of you tj as many many roadies have been doing for years and years and years

    DavidB

I just do not get riding so closely together that you cannot do a full emergency stop.

You need an apprenticeship in a road club to understand this.

    1) leans over the driver from a greater height
    2) gets in the drivers personal space
    3) gets within arms length of the driver
    4) touches the drivers property
    %) aggressive body language

Proper lols at this. Especially 1) 3) and %)

This is a real lesson in perception.
I’d interpret that body language as leaning slightly on a car for stability while trying to control a slowing bike, he’s not exactly squaring up to him.

But then I’m not trying to demonstrate how I’d have handled the situation so much better than they did.

Applause! This is absolutely on the nail.

Maybe some of you should actually read this and reconsider the conclusions you jumped to

Especially those who banged on about “escalation”

    https://road.cc/content/news/cyclist-punched-repeatedly-head-furious-driver-286281

It appears they were trying to do exactly what you all said they should

I can’t see how your options 2 and 3 are any different from what they did bar the hand on mirror

Option 2 is confrontational. I know because I did it in Devon. Drive got out of car and pulled a Big Daddy move on me with his belly.

    Option 3 is confrontational.

    DavidB

but simply saying dealing with a road rager in a different way would have been better

I’m interested in the alternative suggestions you have

I don’t condone confronting drivers aggressively, but I suspect said drivers will approach a group differently next time in order to avoid a confrontation. I accept this will not always be positive but if nothing at all is done then the driver behaviour remains as it was. It seems as if you are saying that groups who are harassed (which is what he did with his beep)
should just let it go? If so, he will continue to do it. Nothing changes.

And if the answer is “give footage to police”. Forget that one. I now don’t bother with my camera as numerous reports have ended in tumbleweed.

Page 4 and no mention of Sven Hassel? I somehow read several of these war books as a teenager. The worst pulp fiction ever.

Who on the STW staff rides bikes day in day out above all else? I’m not convinced they have the staff to write objective reviews as they are all getting old/married/safe. It feels to me like the whole industry needs a massive yoof injection

I pay way over the supermarket prices to a local baker, fishmonger and wine seller. I mean 50% more in some cases simply because I love these people and know just how hard they work to earn a crust from a marginal business

You have to delete cookies which is massively shit on mobile (safari) as you are logged out of all sites. Then the logged out problem appears again. The AI is pre-neanderthal at the moment clearly.

Only a matter of time before someone mentions the cafe at Grindleford station, their breakfasts and the (now retired) miserable sod who used to run it…

I made a point of asking for mushrooms every visit. He’d explode. If you know why you’ve read the sign.

I spent last week in a holiday rental in Brixham. The rental ran from Sunday to Sunday which was ideal from a traffic point of view.

    @toonfan 80-90 miles

Be aware that a lot of bridleways/byways near Totnes/Dartmouth are unrideable due to brambles, ferns and general lack of farmer maintenance. The recent rain has churned a lot up as well and it is still pretty damp.

If you want a big day out head to Totnes then follow NCN 2 to Plymouth. Pick up Drakes trail to Yelverton, nip to Burrator then over to Princetown on old railway track. Back home via Hexworthy, Ashburton, Kingskerswell.

I’ve done this on my gravelpoon from Brixham
