  • Who won the Surly Grappler in 502 Club Raffle?

I sent off for the stuff last year but never applied in the end. If you listen to Hugh Fearnly Wittingstall the EA will beg you to cure them of their crayfish armageddon. The reality is somewhat different.

You need to apply for a license to trap crayfish, it’s different from a rod and line license. There are a lot of considerations. Firstly, there’s a bit of a catch 22: They won’t let you trap in waters where there are white-clawed crayfish, and they won’t tell you what these are. They ask you to give details of the stretch of water you intend to trap on, including the owner, then they’ll tell you if you’re allowed to trap there. Your traps need to conform to their spec for not catching water voles and otters, and if you intend to transport live crayfish you need a separate licence to “keep” them. So if you want to purge their digestive tract of mud and sh1te before you eat it then you need the same licence as a commercial crayfish farmer.

Basically they want the waters rid of crayfish, but they don’t want merry foraging fearnly wittingstall types taking out all the big mature specimens to eat and leaving the smaller ones to proliferate.

I can email you the info pack/licence application if you want.

Went to see my brother in grasmere last week and we went there. 180mm freeride bike was a bit too much to make the climbing fun, but I thought the descent was great. You can keep loads of speed through the berms. I thought it was great fun, pretty muddy but if anything that made it a bit less predictable.

I’ve eaten in the Yorkshire Bridge a couple of times, it’s a lovely pub. Don’t know much else round there. Snake Inn?

I find stews a bit rich made with just wine. If you use a tough cut of meat like shin or skirt, dust it with seasoned flour, brown it in a frying pan, then braise it in nothing but water (with seasoning) and veg for 6-7 hours on a low heat, the gravy you get is amazing. No stock needed. If you’re going to do a quick stew then I wouldn’t put all that wine in as it will be practically still be wine when it comes out.

    Celery is essential.

There is an online equivalent/interface for small claims court called “HM Courts Service Money Claims Online”.

I recently started the process to scare a client of mine into paying an invoice, but they got the message. It’s pretty simple. There’s a 60 cost incurred which theoretically they are liable for. It’s all explained fairly well on the website.

I went to Llandegla today, too. It was the second time I’ve been, first was this time last year. I live in right next to the peaks, but I fancied a bit of variety, and I like the fact there are jumps along the trail. Got all the way round to the little black loop bit with the bridge and jumps, only to find it was closed because someone was doing jumping lessons! Balls. And they’d come up there in a 4×4! The main black bit before that is superb though.

In my experience (in the Anti Atlas, south of Agadir) you will need to find someone who knows their way around, as none of the maps are much cop.

It’s usually very easy to do. There are two things to consider. Make sure you buy the right kind of chip (it will be something like DDR xxx Mhz), google for the model of laptop or look on the chip that’s in there already. Secondly, some laptops can only recognize a certain amount of RAM, so it may be that if you buy a 2GB chip, you will only get 1GB of RAM out of it. Again, if you can find a spec sheet for the laptop online it should tell you what the max RAM is.

When I saw the swatch (without knowing it was called disco black) I said “disco!”. It looks exactly how you would imagine.

We were thinking of moving to switzerland. In my preliminary research this was the best website I found….

Many logs are left stored while owner can find a buyer

    Does Sheffield Council sell logs?

Small windfall in forests / brash seems fair game for kindling

It strikes me that windfall in forests will provide more appropriate shelter for animals than doofing great boughs left next to a road, which will only provide habitat for saprobic fungi and some insects.

And how is buring wood not carbon neutral?

“It’s thieving”, “it’s dangerous”, “think of the animals”. That’s why this country is going to the dogs. It’s a dead tree – use some initiative. If it’s not someone’s private property take it home for carbon neutral home heating. The council aren’t going to do anything with it apart from maybe mulch it, and otherwise a felled or fallen tree lying on the ground isn’t going to do much for biodiversity. If you’re worried about health and safety use a bow saw.

That price is off the Jenson USA site, so they’ll probably be even more when they come out over here. They’re based on the Holzfeller, apparently, which is good but not XTR…

    You’ll also need…

    * Hammerschmidt BB is not included. Sold seperately.
    * Requires a SRAM Hammerschmidt-specific front shifter. Sold seperately.

Thanks Wozza. Unfortunately I will be winging my way to orpington in order to copy 2 files onto 100 SD cards, then driving back again, and won’t have time to play in the snow 🙁

Why not look at the pennine bridleway? I think it’s pretty much entirely off road. You can ride it from Edale to the Mary Towneley Loop in the South Pennines.

Flash is released by Adobe nowadays, I don’t know what that link is but Flash Player is definitely downloaded at Adobe.com

I don’t think you should get a popup about this in any case, is it a javascript alert box with a yellow triangle exclamation mark sign?

They always have cove frames when I’ve been in there. It’s in New Mill though as far as I know, not Huddersfield.

I had a flyer from DVLA through the door at xmas saying you have 4 or 5 days grace to display the new disc, something to that effect.

However I’m impressed the vandal has used the apostrophe correctly in the word “thehe’s”

Personally I don’t think Nazi’s should have an apostrophe there. You could argue that etymologically the word has its roots in an abbreviation but I think in common usage it’s become a word in its own right. In any case if it was an abbreviation you should have capitalised it.

Explain your situation to your new company and ask them not to put you on the books til your current contract has ended.

I think it depends how much the payment is. I received a gift payment of 110 recently and the sender had to pay fees. When I repaid 50% of the fee (a few pounds) there was no fee issued. I’m pretty sure I’ve sent gift payments up to about £50 without incurring a fee.

I was on a long ride in the Lakes last a coupld of years ago (sam houghton challenge), with wheels that I’d been using for a few months. I had a flat half way down a massive descent, and after I’d fixed it I noticed that it was rubbing. When I got to the bottom all the spokes were totally loose, like they’d come unscrewed. I never worked out why it happened, it’s never done it since. Bizarre.

They are full of “good bacteria”. In tests they stopped old people who were on antibiotics from getting as much diarrhoea.

My favourite story about “probiotic” yogurts is that when they invented the bacteria, they had to make different cod-latin names for each country, for example “Bifidum Actiregularis” presumably doesn’t have the same marketing connotations when translated, so in France is called “Biffidum actif essensis”.

I’ve been keeping an eye out for a SS frame. CRC have them on “SALE!!” at £1728.99 (RRP £1729.00).

I was in Moonglu in Ripon the other day, they have a 09 tracer with 200 quid off…

Sadly their SS has a 150mm back end and is red.

If you ring them and tell them you’re being made redundant they will probably stop it from the date of your redundancy. When I became self-employed three years ago I rang them up to talk about my options since I didn’t know what my income would be, and they put it on hold straight away for a year.

I am on the old (pre-98) system too, will have finished paying them in March!!! Wooo!

Thanks for the detailed reply, that looks brilliant. Is there a defined trail on the glacier? How easy is it to navigate? I’ll be going at the end of june so hopefully there won’t be too much snow around. I’ll be driving too, and GF will be busy at her conference all day so 45 mins is no problem.

As far as I know iPlayer uses streaming Flash video. Knowing Apple I would be surprised if this was something iTunes could play them, doesn’t it use only MP4 video?

I can watch iplayer on my TV through my Wii.

I have a dakine drafter, carries full face outside via straps, and leg bits underneath via straps. I don’t know if you’d get body armour inside it (ie a pressure suit)

It’s never happened to me on 130mm forks on XC bike or 200mm triples on freeride bike (same headset). I don’t know if it’s happened to my jump bike but my handlebars haven’t snapped off yet, so that’s OK.
