One son has a Kona Stinky Junior. Very heavy, very capable.
Other has Marin Bayview SE, which is very light and is perfect. Apart from the fact that the fork is a joke and so has been replaced with a rockshox air fork. now the bike is perfect. Not cheap though.

Thanks for everybody's information. I have been to Verbier with Bike verbier but we only did one or two trails that I would like to take the kids on (at least at the start). That is not to say there aren't suitable ones around.

    thanks!

I bought some Reba airs for my 8yr old off classifieds. air specifically because he is light and his weight is going to change.

My son uses them on the road. He has coped very well. But I wouldn't entertain them for him off road! He is 9.

I bought one off ebay, just a cheapie for taking the kids to school. It cost about £400 posted. It worked really well for the 12 months it was needed. I think it was called a Viking Sarotoga???

I had a Cupra, 57k miles in 15months. Great car, drove it flat out all the time, never had any problems (other than service every 9 weeks!). Very comfortable. Never got more than 28mpg, putting shell optimax paid for itself in increased MPG (and you got more power too).

The one to buy is the 150 tdi cupra (they didn’t exist when I bought mine).

    Mk2 Cupra R doesn’t exist yet.

My 7yr old boy rides a 26″ wheel bike, that looks a little big.
My 9yr old on a Konda Stinky 24″ wheel looks fine (I think he is around 140-145cm tall).

14″ inbred would be my choice for the older boy.

I have the Thule 903 + 4th bike adaptor, it works.
    Downsides are:
    heavy (are any light?)
not massive space between bikes, so often have to pad out forks so they dont get marked
bit of creative locating when feeding the clamps through
Tilt is useless in my opinion.

    Upside:
stable at 95mph on the continent
folds up to 1/3 size – still takes quite a bit of room
would be a faff to adjust to different tow balls

I got mine from roofbox, had some issues, dealt with very quickly.

Yes, nobody every got in contact and nobody offered to sort out my post!

Based on experiences highlighted you only have to be worried in 6+ months time (if you live in the UK)

Cake, sweets (fruit if you like) all good ploys.
    Hills they dont like.
camelbaks are useful aids for pulling them up hills.
They work about at about 1/4 of my speed.
Cwmcarn worked well – we rode up the road, so they weren’t too tired at the top.

Getting positive comments from other riders fills them with real pride!

Penhydd at Afan – they were spotted by a ranger and he told them to go to the office after and they could get a certificate – they loved that!

Local tracks, etc are good for bike skills. Also built mine a couple of jumps for the garden.

Still can’t get them to grasp that uphill pain has to be felt before downhill fun.

Nothing like a little ‘un whooping with fun coming down Cwmcarn.

For something that has a known fault and was rectified then you would hope/expect the supplier to do something.

Got a marin bayview se for my son and I am very happy with it (http://www.abbeycycles.com/products.php?plid=m1b0s15p492)

Although the shop did have to hack at the spring in the fork because it was acting like a rigid fork!

It changed my son from not really enjoying riding to whooping coming down cwmcarn (he is 7).

My prime concern was that it was light – I think this is one of the lightest.

Would it, that was what I was getting it. My own failure, taken in isolation, resulted in my shrugging my shoulders and just replacing it. It wasn’t until I was aware of others failing that caused me to want some action on my old seatpost.

Well, I have had no contact from SDG.
I have contacted silverfish and they are still unwilling to do anything.
They have taken exception to my opening statement, so I will clarify:

    I stated

“they are a bunch of lying ***”

    which I retract.

Whereas I think the accurate statement should be:

STW is not a massive web site and probably only represents a small portion of the MTB community. But upon posting the thread a small number of people reported similar failures. If you extrapolate that out I would guess that you are looking at a reasonable number of failures .

I guess lots of people put it down to usage/age and an isolated incident and just bin it.

What caused alarm bells to ring was when one person had a failure, then mine failed and then his REPLACEMENT failed.

I see that SDG in the states has only a 30 day warranty for manufacturing faults.

    Silverfish still are not interested.

    This was their original reply:
We see very few warranty returns on the I-Beam seatposts, but we do of course stand behind all of our products and provide one of the best warranty services in the industry; the normal course of action would be that the seatpost would be taken back to the bike shop, who would replace the seatpost (providing it’s a legitimate warranty claim of course) and we wouldn’t even be contacted by the consumer. The issue with your warranty claim is that not only do you not have a proof of purchase (which is always required when making a warranty claim), but you can’t even name the dealer that sold you the product (who you would need to return the seatpost to); this leads to a great deal of ambiguity as to the source of the product, and we are acutely aware that there are a lot of OE SDG grey imports and possibly even counterfeit goods available in the UK which obviously would not be covered under the official UK warranty.

you have not been in contact with me and like I say, the importers just stopped short of being rude (in my opinion).

What process is there for sorting this out?

Chris – it is nice to see you replying here, it is appreciated.

However, I have a broken seatpost and the importers or being far from helpful! Reason I mention the importers are that I dont have a receipt. They say they have never heard of it happening and yet there are a (relatively small) number of failures being posted on here.

As a company who seem to be interested in their product are you willing to support a customer without a receipt? I am willing to post the post to you so that you can see in person the failure. I am VERY interested because I replaced it with….another SDG I beam…..

I have had mine fail. Been in contact with silverfish because I dont have a receipt, THEY DID NOT WANT TO KNOW!

    He also claimed :

“We see very few warranty returns on the I-Beam seatposts”

So basically they are a bunch of lying ****

I will post them this URL for them to read!
