Devs – and mine too, eh?

Mine do that too. Been meaning to get them converted to U-Turn coils for a while. A strip and rebuild sorts them out, but they creep down again pretty soon. IIRC it’s the positive air leaking through to the negative side, pushing them down.

Mapdroid might work for you. Decent vector mapping, but no searches, rout planning, directions etc. Maps are downloaded to SD card though.

What is a chugger? I never go shopping

Embarrassed edit: charity mugger right? What a clot!

Not where I was brought up. Chugger already meant something quite different before people started glueing words together to make an urbanictionary.

Not all the tributaries will come from higher ground

So, do the tributaries from lower ground flow uphill into the bigger rivers?

Also, do the Desire battery trick to improve charging effectiveness.

    1. Fully charge overnight, with the phone switched ON.
    2. Switch OFF, and plug into charger for an hour.
    3. Switch ON for 10 mins or so
    4. Switch OFF, and charge for an hour again.
    5. Switch ON and use.

Doing this saw about a 30%ish improvement in capacity. Does need re-doing every now and then.

I used to find these impossible to open. Devised all sorts of methods, using long nosed pliers, bits of cable, hammers, etc.

Went to undo one with just my hands one day, and mentioned to Devs that these are always impossible to disconnect. His 2-word advice was spot on, as usual, and the link just come apart without really thinking about how I had managed it.

    The advice? – “think bra”

If you can undo one of them one-handed, then a power link should be easy.

That was my understanding of it – the error was that Google were for a while registering joe.bloggs to one user and joebloggs to another, leading to great confusion.

I’ve just tried again sending to my address without the dot – straight through.

I did hear that Google were allowing john.smith@google.com and johnsmith@google.com to register, then mixing up their emails. I did try to send to my own googlemail address without the dot, and it worked – just hope they don’t register that address to someone else…

+1 for Shimano. Can’t advise much about maintaining them – they just never seem to need any fettling. Fit & forget. I could never say that about any make of V’s I ever used

(n.b. For clarity, “V’s” in this context is an abbreviation of “V-Brakes”, not ‘versus’.)

Having worked on my own XT and SLX’s, and some Hopes and Avids last weekend on the ‘puffer, I’d never fit Avids. What a complete PITA to work on, especially in the cold/dark/mud of an endurance event. In fact, the design of them contributed to an extra hour on one lap, with the rider walking out carrying the bike. Not good. Hopes were much simpler, but still needed a wee bleed once the pads had been changed – possibly due to the bike being upside down. Shimano every time for my money. XT or SLX, not much in it – but SLX are a nicer price.

Drinking cold Guinness is the beer equivalent of drinking red wine out of the fridge.

I can vouch for that. They both turn yer shite black.

Good effort Devilman. Glad I was free to help out. I’ll post up my pics when I get home – forgot to do that yesterday, soz.

The good (or bad?) news is that I’m off the same weekend next year too….

Forget about fuel economy – you are going to struggle with that on any 4×4 (Fiat Panda maybe? – too small)

Once you have forgotten about economy, get a 4WD Mazda Bongo. If you don’t know what they are, have a look at the Bongo Fury website. The benefits do outweigh the cost of fuel.

Mass damper? Probably bolted to the gearbox or engine mounting somewhere.

Back on topic, my boiler used to do the pressure fluctuation thing a lot. Sometimes keeping pressure for a week or more, other times dumping it right down to 0BARG in the space of a day.

I thought it was probably a pressure vessel / diaphragm fault, as I had no leaks anywhere. Put it on my round tuit list.

Doing a spot of kitchen renovation, I removed a radiator. During the removal, it appeared that the feed pipe to the rad was a bit ropey, and the connection valve onto the rad was seized, which was going to rip the pipe out. Drained down, replaced the rad valve and a bit of pipe – and noticed a green staining on the pipework. “Hmmm… ” I thought.

Since re-assembling and refilling etc, the pressure has been steady for a month or so now….

So, tiny weep on a fitting can lead to all sorts of pressure gauge fluctuations, and can be a right pain to find.

+1 for winter tyres. Just fitted a set for the first time and I can say that they are a revelation. I’ve had plenty of experience driving in snow in the past 25 years in Scotland – always on ‘normal’ tyres. Chains are great, but you really need to get into bother before you’ll get out in the cold (and usually dark) to fit them. I paid £200 for a set delivered and fitted, including steel wheels. I can’t imagine even a minor bump causing me less than £200 worth of grief. Factor in the life of the tyres (hopefully 3-5 winters, and they are a no-brainer.

The levels of grip, especially under braking where it really matters, are incredible in snow and also impressive on sheet ice. You obviously need to exercise caution, but the margin of safety is so much better.

Compulsory in winter? I know it’s a big expense for most, but in honesty, the compounded expense of accidents, slow traffic, blocked roads, emergency response, etc, etc do seem to make it worthwhile. Let’s face it, if it makes sense for one car owner to pay for winter tyres as opposed to the cost of having a minor bump without factoring in the additional cost / disruption you can cause to others then it surely scales up to every vehicle on the road as a common sense approach. The only big issue is that of storage. I wouldn’t fancy carrying my dirty alloys up to my flat in November when I’d just fitted my winter tyres. Business opportunity for removals / storage firms there…

My Bongo 4×4 on Snow tyres.

Ground clearance will ultimately let it down, but it’s simply awesome in the snow – far exceeding my expectations of a 2 ton automatic campervan. As good as my Allroad was despite having a far inferior 4×4 drivetrain, and no ESP etc.

sow cress seed in the shape of a cock & balls on his grass. Almost un-noticeable when they grow through with their little green leaves. Not so un-noticeable when he mows the lawn and exposes the white stalks. Very effective, and a real bugger to get rid of.

GPS is free. A-GPS uses your mobile signal to help with location, but doesn’t specifically use the data connection, or any sort of internet traffic.

You have various options to use the GPS without a data connectin. Mapdroyd is excellent vector mapping. Download the maps on your home WiFi connection, and off you go. It isn’t like googlemaps / nav though – no search, no looking things up, just a map with your GPS location on it. There are others available.

Sounds steep to me. I live in a 120 year old drafty detached money pit with a 5 year old combi-boiler, made before they had A ratings etc. £270 a month for gas and lekky – and it’s in the North of Scotland, which we all know is permanantly frozen all year. I’ve just switched and should save about £700 a year, if I believe the hype. Visit moneysavingexpert.com for a check-up.

I wish I lived in Wrexham.

They do hoover up some amount of data with all the bells & whistles switched on.
