    Easy outs.

    There are 2 types though.

One is a reverse-threaded tapering thing that you screw in anti-clockwise, and it either a) unscrews the snapped off bit, or b) expands the snapped off bit and then snaps itself – and they are so hard you can’t drill into it. not a good situation.

The other, less common, type is a set of straight rods of differing diameters, with raised ridges running down the outside. You tap the best fit in gently, and then slip over a collar with a hex outside that you can undo with a spanner. Snap-on used to do them.

The easiest and most successful way id to go to the nearest engine machine shop – the sort of place that skims cylinder heads, re-grinds crankshafts, etc – and get them to do it for about £10.

Not got one, but did give it serious consideration. All the reviews shout about the battery life being terrible. My previous phone (N95 mk1) was pretty pants on battery life, so I didn’t want to repeat the experience.

Ended up with an E71 – which is great. Won’t bore you with a review of that, since you asked about the G1. Have you seen the ‘G2’ articles ?

    What about a Hilux?

Decent offroad, acceptable at speed. Won’t break any records though, but should be a wee bit more refined than a defender.

    Allroad x2.

Get the 2.7T petrol one for more oomph / fun. The 2.5 TDi is quick enough, but with the price of diesel and the fairly poor MPG, the petrol would be a good bet – and probably cheaper too.

Edit – only 26, pimp it a bit.

Mine’s pretty poor. We are only allowed to travel by company appointed transport. There are no bike facilities at all. We have on-site accommodation for shift workers, so there are showers, but not much use if you are not allowed a bike here.

The commute would be pretty tough anyway. 120 miles of the North Sea.

    Partition magic ?

Mind you, I’d be wary of partition magic’ing a HDD that was configured as a Raid Array by Windows.

Find some Bob Heath spray. Works a treat.

The stick-on “double glazing” things work well too – but you need to take care sticking them in.

I’ve gone from 1 car to 3 recently. That way I’ve always got a spare when one breaks down. TBH, I could do away with them all. I commute by train / helicopter, and live close enough to everything I need to either walk / ride there.

TBH I’ve been enjoying it, but I wish they’d just not bothered going north of the border.

To investigate Whisky by simply going to a single distillery, and a far flung remote and almost unique one at that, and not even mention Speyside did seem like they were missing the point really. At least in Ireland they did mention Guinness a few times.

    And as for

“nobody likes neeps and tatties anyway”

and having peas and carrots with Haggis – get a grip FFS. If Oz Clarke doesn’t like neeps & tatties then fair enough, don’t eat them, but to declare that his taste reflects that of the whole country? Fathead!. I didn’t hear them saying

“nobody really likes yorkshire puddings, so we’ll have roast beef and pancakes instead”

    . Grrrr..

I’m still not sure if he was suspicious of us or if he was acting as an escort so we didn’t get car-jacked.

If he was a scouse copper he was probably thinking about nicking it himself.

Aldi ones have been fine for me. Tesco also do one for about a tenner with a similar bladder (in the aisle next to ‘those’ torches!!). Had a couple of platupus bladders which leaked. Not tried the camelbak ones, just way too expensive for what they are IMO.

So to recap – 661 storms not very good, specialized sub zeros really great in the dry but terrible in heavy rain.

My 661 Storms are actually OK at keeping the rain out. If it’s really pishing it down I wear skiing gloves, but they are a tad more bulky.

There is a definate knack to getting the storms off without turning the lining inside out though….

Just been into CPW to see what the progress was on my SE which is in for repair. They looked it up on the puter, and it has gone from CPW repair people back to SE.

The switched on member of staff in my local CPW looked at the date I handed it in, and as it was 29 days ago she arranged for a new phone to be sent out (unfortunately none in stock, or she’d have handed one out).

The CPW store manager kept trying to tell her that there was no 28 day limit etc, but she was clearly a good egg and had been reading the CPW rule book, which she quoted at her manager and at the repair centre bod on the other end of the phone.

Eventually they all just agreed that she was right, and my replacement is on the way.

Might be worth scanning the CPW small print (website?) to see if the 28 day thing is published anywhere, then print it out and wave it at them. It went along the lines of the phone will be back from repair within 28 days from handing it to CPW or they have to replace it.

I used one on my last car – very quick to clamp on and remove, and it folded up in the boot when it wasn’t being used. Excellent kit really. Don’t know if you can still get them like this one – Was Paddy Hopkirk branded – about £30 10 years ago.

Using a roof rack now, since it will cost me at least £500 to stick a rowbar on the new car. Can’t justify it really since I have a pickup for the tip run etc so don’t use the trailer much now.

The towbar rack was definately more convenient though. It would only take 2 bikes, but then so does my roofrack at the mo.

After much pondering recently (iPhone, HTC Touch HD, Storm, etc) I decided that I just wasn’t ready for the full touch screen experience.

I had been shocked in the past how truly useless the N95 (original version), and N80 before it were, but I read some good tings about the E71 and went for it.

All good news so far. Camera’s not great, and the flash is useless – either a complete washout close up or not enough at any sort of distance. Handy as a torch though.

I had read, as mentioned above, that the signal strength is supposed to be poor, but so far it has been as good as my last phone (Nok 5500 Sport).

Web, email, fring, and of course phoning people are all good. Texting on the wee querty is also good, but takes a day or so to get used to. Also has predictive text that actually predicts, unlike the usual guff.

I used to do this as a teenager, riding around on an old 5-speed erm ‘racer’ with a pannier full of tools. It got me out and I did earn enough cash to fund my bikery habits.

Wouldn’t bother now though; I’ve changed, bikes have changed, lots of net-based how-to guides, etc.

MrsAber moves the stuff I’ve left lying around – normally about a foot from where I left it – and that’s tidy. If I move it a foot left before she comes in, she ‘tidys’ it back to where I left it.

Still, she lets me spend my money on whatever I want, as long as she gets some to play with, so that’s OK.

Get an SLR, you know you want to. My D300 will take 6 shots in a second, in fact you have to touch the button very lightly or it takes 2 shots before you lift your finger :o)

    Sounds like the divert valve.

It works by having the ‘hot’ circuit and the ‘cold’ circuit on opposite sides of a rubber diaphragm. When you open a hot tap (or the shower) the ‘hot’ pressure drops, and the diaphragm moves. It is attached to a shaft, which pokes out of the end of the valve body, and in turn pushes a microswitch which will fire up the boiler thus turning the ‘hot’ water hot.

The diaphragm eventually breaks down, and stops moving. It can shift on the initial demand, then the pressure equalises and it moves back – and the boiler thinks you don’t need any more hot water, and shuts off.

I have had to replace 2 of these on my 4-year old Worcester Bosch 28CDi.

It is a DIY-able job, and doesn’t involve touching the Gas side. However, I wouldn’t recommend it if you are not in possession of reasonable DIY skills.

The valve is pretty buried in the 28CDI – the rest look similar. Lots of things to take out before you get to the valve. Lots of potential leaks when reassembling.

Replacement valves are about £180 IIRC, but last time I did one, I got a replacement diaphragm for £15. 1st time took me about 3 hours.

There is a decent repair manual available online here –

    http://www.newtonnet.co.uk/house/boiler/servicemanual.pdf

You can do a ‘quick fix’ if you glue a lump of something onto the end of the actuator shaft, but it will only buy you about a week at best.

    HTH.

Mineral Hydraulic oil is pretty much all the same (prepares to be contradicted). I use LHM from halfrauds, or wherever, as I have had a number of Citroens which used it. Lovely stuff. OM-15 would also do if you can get hold of it at work!

A6 Allroad. The 2.5 TDi is reasonably rapid, the 27.T petrol more so. And it’s got some ‘go anywhere’ ability when you get to wherever you are going to use the bike.

It is a bit of a barge though, so although it’s quick it’s not the most nimble thing on the road. A quick A4 Avant would be more ‘sporty’, but I can’t comment on the boot space.

A4 Allroad would be just the ticket if the bikes would fit inside.

Devs and I have both got 2-step air Lyrics – both with minor issues. Excellent when they work, can’t say they are 100% reliable. Both still useable though – one sits too high, the other too low.

Both thinking about a £60 u-turn coil conversion – recommended by TFTuned.
