I wldt buy anthing on ebay – its full of pikeys & scoundrels..

Are you basing this on experience, or opinion?

I’ve completed over 200 transactions on eBay, I follow some pretty common sense ‘rules’ about who I will deal with, and I’ve never had a bad experience. One neutral feedback in all of that, down to a misunderstanding.

Common sense, clear and regular communications, shouldn’t be a problem.

To the OP – The seller may well have discovered how much of a PITA it can be to post things, especially large or odd items – However, if he’s offered to post it he should honour that. If he’s changed his mind you have the right to walk away. Do this without clear communication, and you will both end up with neg feedback. Talk to him and I’m sure you can clear it up. As Gingerflash says, give him some leeway on the time replying – He’s got a real life too which may well have got in the way.

I phoned round loads recently asking about shipping a Nomad. None of them would offer any lee-way with the size limits thing. City Link amongst others said no. I ended up using Interparcel, who would take the size (fnarr), and provide the right level of insurance. When it arrived – it was in a city link van.

Shimano, Mineral, LHM, Audi PS Fluid, OM15 – all the same basically, and compatible.

Dot anything is non-mineral hydraulic oil. Can be mixed, but why would you use 4 if you could use 5.1? (BTW, Dot 4 boils at 155C wet and 230C dry, Dot 5.1 boils at 191C wet, 270C dry – That’s the DOT spec, so if you find a brand of ‘DOT 5.1’ which boils lower, it ain’t 5.1)

Dot stuff is pretty horrible, mineral stuff is much more pleasant. Both types will get past the other one’s seals, so wrong fluid = lots of leaks and new seals all round. Not good.

Strange coincidence – I’m just about to apply for a visa waiver. If you are a UK citizen planning to travel to the USA, you need a visa waiver, not a visa – apply here:

I was really struggling to find a courier to collect a nomad I bought last year.

Packed with the front wheel and bars removed, it was about 15Kg, but the dimensions were too big for most couriers unless I had an account. They all seem to have a “2xLength + Height + width = x” sort of calculation, and the box was always just too big.

Eventually I got it taken by Interparcel. Cost £71 to take it from Sheffield to Inverness, with the appropriate level of insurance cover.

When it arrived, almost exactly 24 hours after collection it was in a city link van. City Link had refused to take it because it was too big! And they would have been more expensive…..

    I’ll never understand couriers….

Ask the seller if cash on collection is OK, even if you are miles away. You will get an idea from his/her response (or lack of it) – make your own mind up from that….

mick_r – Interested to hear that you have had 9 years out of a divert valve. Are you in a hard water area? Whilst I remember, I have also had the bearings seize up in the flue fan assembly. About £2.50 from RS Components to replace. No flue flow = no fire up

the bike, rider, kit, water, tools, etc adds up to over 100Kgs

Well no if you are not riding 2Dh bikes at the same time.

Maybe not if you’re 8 stone wet through. For the more generously proportioned then 100Kg all-up is not far off the norm

Smoothwall basically turns an old PC into a hardware firewall. It’s a linux distro that you install with 2 network cards, and then it just sits and does its thing.

You manage it from your PC on the ‘safe’ side of the firewall via a web interface. Worth a play if you are into that sort of thing. As most routers now come with a built-in firewall it’s debatable whether it is worth it these days.

Got a WorcesterBosch 28cdi – needs the divert valve diaphragm replacing every 18 months or so. Bit of a PITA to do due to the layout of the boiler.

Just had a boiler replaced in a flat, plumbers all recommended Valliant as the ones which break down the least. This new one (condensing combi) is certainly more efficient than the antique that it replaced. As for reliability – we shall see (or I’ll read about it down there in a few minutes!)

Hardware firewall – Prevents incoming connections other than those specifically allowed. Either seperate box or built-in to your router.

Software firewall – Controls which applications get outbound access. Typically, a trojan keylogger or spam generator will try to send data outbound. A good software (desktop) firewall should prevent this.

Similar names, different jobs, both required.

Your testing for ‘hidden-ness’ is testing your hardware firewall. Windows does have a built-in software firewall, but it’s not the best, and is an obvious target for the devious. Zone alarm is free.

Dick – For my money it’s XT, or SLX in fact.

Not really a rant though, I can quite understand people using XTR on a general use trail bike, even on a going to the shops bike if they want to. The few times I have used XTR it’s been older kit inherited on bikes, and didn’t seem any better functionally than XT, so to my mind it was just a weight thing. I’ve always considered XTR more fragile though – based on talk more than experience though.

Fair point that weight in certain places is more noticeable than in others – there’s no doubt that weight at the wheel rim is far more important than anywhere else. But an extra 1lb over the groupset or in my rucsack whilst general trail riding?

My choice would be go for the XT and spend the savings on personal preference upgrades (wheels?)

Buy a 2 litre camelbak, and only half fill it. 1Kg saved, for free.

Drink the remaining litre, sweat some of it out – even more weight saved.

I really fail to see how 1lb really makes that much difference when the bike, rider, kit, water, tools, etc adds up to over 100Kgs. I can understand spending money on the ‘best’ functionally, and wouldn’t want a 5Kg rear mech, but I have always felt that the huge price increase from XT -> XTR really was hard to justify. Fair enough if there is some functional reason as well as the weight saving.
