I would be tempted to get something with coil forks, less to go wrong.
most UK folks would want a brand they recognise, hence the meta wins, not that it necessarily should, the canyon looks good.

you'll be wanting hope tech v2s.
only slightly heavier than the m4s and not so on\off as the saints
modulation a plenty, best brakes I have had, bar none.

    poor test control, poor magazine.

its not all about power anyhow, how about ease of maintenance, pad change, bleeding etc.

my current favorite brake: Hope Tech V2

In my experience of the going to the alps for 2-11 weeks a year for the last 5, the only brake not to have problems and to maintain a constant lever feel (original V2 admittedly)

Just because you are going somewhere different, doesn't mean you will be riding any differently, so don't go overboard with armour and new stuff.

yes you will. the descents are longer and you will naturally go faster, especially as your confidence increases.
Also, if you aren't going to ride any differently, why go?

wear as much armour as you want, a small spill on a dusty fireroad full of marbles at 30mph on the first day taking most of your skin with it is likely to ruin a holiday…..

(btw ventoux is not in the alps)

I seem to remember you asking advice on some pretty basic things not long ago..

I find clicking on the "member" nest to the users name, and seeing what threads they started quite illuminating, usually.

    I lol'd

no way of adjusting preload on lyriks, if you aren't getting the required sag, you need a lighter spring, see tf tuned.

you are correct, it is more simple that you thought, and more than likely as simple as me. I am quite a simple person at heart.

    Hows about this:
Winning the downhill world cup is like winning the premier league.
Winning the world championships is like winning the fa cup final (without having to qualify, although you do need to be nominated by your local cycling governing body)

I am not a football fan either, however I know the principles of the premier league and fa cup.

    cheers
also, its a simile, not a metaphor
    any better?

I'll put it in terms you can understand.

Winning the downhill world cup is like winning the premier league.
Wining the world championships is like winning the european cup.

Now if i was specing an all mountain bike for my self it would have QR forks because i dont believe all the hype about disks ripping wheels out

so, all things being equal, given the choice between 15mm, 20mm and standard QR, you would chose QR? why?
because you can get your wheels out quicker? Because its cheaper? Lighter?
please explain as I really don't understand a conscious decision to do that, and more than that, advising other people to take that route (who might not be racing xc or 24s)

I've got some '07 TALAS with QR, using with a Hope Bulb and hope Ti QR skewer, don't find them to be overly flexy, but I haven't tried 15mm ones for comparison.

    nice balanced view then

trail_rat – I bent the arch on a pair of original orange z1's – would I have done it if they were bolt through? more than likely not.
A big list of old forks proves nothing, other than technology has moved forward, as has the speed and capability of mountain bikes – Do motorcross bikes have a slim quick release mechanism?
Are you happy with a system that in some peoples opinion combined with disc brakes can undo?
Well why use standard QR then?
I can't see the sense in it when there are alternatives.
Lets be honest, another couple of years or so (we already have 2 non-QR standards – 15mm, 20mm) you won't be able to get standard QR wheels or forks anyway. Then where will you be? Riding a hybrid on a tow path, most probably

Standard QR on mountain bikes = FAIL (road bike technology)

what is your rush about getting the wheel out anyway?
Why wouldn't you want more direct steering and a stiffer front end?

when there was no option , fair enough, but get with the times\technology people

(if you don't ride fast enough to feel the bike flex, and like getting your wheels out quick, ignore the above)

let the faster guys go first, pull over when you feel a 2.5 minion buzzing your back wheel.

the trail is too short to be held up by someone giving it the "pull over when its safe" "on your left squire" bollocks. (especially if you have paid for an uplift at the best part of £30 a day – or at least £3 per run)

other than that, feel free to catch the slower folks

    easy really.
