What does it say about singletrack readers that a review of a pressure washer gets more comments than articles about actual mountain bikes.

From what I have seen it looks like a lot of funding for cycling infrastructure is part of road building schemes. This means the cycle path goes where the road goes. So the east Leeds bypass has a great cycle path but who cycles on a ring road. Adding miles to a car journey makes sense if it reduces congestion but cycle commuters need the shortest option. People will then complain that no-one uses the bike path so all bike paths are a waste of money.

There comes an age, I’m not quite there yet, when you go back to telling people how old you’ll be at your next birthday.

@gavinb. I must have been getting confused with the world champs.

    @crazy-legs
. In my defence, I never mentioned ‘proper’ xc. I was really comparing with other courses on the world cup circuit rather than my Sunday afternoon ride. Like I say, I understand the reasons behind it but there’s no getting away from the fact that the course isn’t as good as a world cup course.

I didn’t realise there was no xcc this time. Also, I get that it’s hard to find a great course close to Paris but it’s a shame the biggest event in the sport is so far removed from the reality of xc.

@nickc it depends on where SRAM have saved costs. I assume all the electronic bits are the same and it will be the construction of the mech itself that is different. Your experience of cheap rear mechs might be more relevant than cheap electronics. The conclusion might be the same. I’ve always found cheap rear mechs to be fairly reliable but not everyone agrees.

Skoda provide the support vehicles for the Tour, they don’t have any actual cyclists in the race.

There’s no longer an upper limit on the cycle to work scheme. It’s up to your employer if they set a maximum.

I hope they can make a success of it. They seem to occupy a difficult place in the market, they aren’t boutique enough to compete with the likes of Yeti but they also don’t have the buying power to compete with the big boys on vfm. They have to offer something unique to get people to buy. I’m not sure there are enough of us old duffers around for a retro theme to make sense.

The UCI haven’t made things as simple as having a universal maximum sock length. They can only come to half way between your ankle and your knee. They have a special tool to measure it and everything.

The logos on the back of those vans look a bit like the 44 on the back of the Adidas Germany football shirt that they had to redesign. Apparently, the shoes have sold very quickly. I wonder if it’s really cyclists that are buying them.

If you have to buy one of these bikes yourself, you’re not fast enough to need one.

I’ve never managed to get past the negotiation stage.

You’re right to be concerned about those Rekon tyres. I find they are good in such a narrow range of conditions – not too wet or too dry – that they shouldn’t be specced on complete bike. My bike came with them and it basically adds £100+ to the price if you want to ride for more than 2 weeks a year.

You can still get a budget bike tyre for less than £20 and high quality car tyres will cost more than 10 times that. Comparing a top end mountain bike tyre with a budget car tyre is equally misleading.

Does anyone make a lock that comes with more than one shackle of different lengths? It would be a bit more versatile and cheaper than buying 2 complete locks.

Any idea how feasible it would be to find somewhere to store your gear at the trail centres to make adding in a loop or 2 a bit more appealing?

@ehwhome. It sounds like the settings on this one are different from the twinlock. The middle setting being for big terrain rather than climbing. I think the non st version is more similar to the previous model.

This might not be directly relevant but when riders like Wiggins and Thomas wanted to increase their w/kg, they lost weight, they didn’t increase their power.

We need stuff like this so the people that buy them can feel superior for having expensive kit and those that can’t afford it can feel superior for not falling for the marketing bs.
