I am picking up the bike tomorrow so will post up pictures of the problem areas- a comparison to your set up on and on could be really helpful, thanks!
DanWFree MemberI am in Bath so close(ish)
The LBS have been trying to come up with a solution for the past 2 days and have called to say they have filed the chain guide back plate but it still doesn’t offer enough clearance so they have put everything back how I originally had it set up. They didn’t have any solutions for this :?
I guess most people who run 1×10 on a Scalpel do so with the ring in the outer position on a double crank/ spider which would put the ring between middle and outer on a triple- which is where it looks like it needs to be. The reason I went with the tripe crank on my previous frame was to keep the chainring options open with the 104mm BCD
On the plus side the Scalpel is sitting at 8.6kg with heavy bog standard tubes fitted :D
DanWFree MemberSaw a funny comment on Eurosport…
Q. Why do people take an instant dislike to Gavin Henson?
A. It saves time.Fearns already has a funny addition to his wiki page :D
On 10th July 2013, Fearns knocked out new Bath RFU signing Gavin Henson on a night out in the city. [8]
DanWFree MemberNew mech and ring is an option I hadn’t considered- could be one to look in to
on and on- how does a 36T ring help?
DanWFree MemberWhat is the feeling on Horwill’s captaincy future in Aus? Giving up so many kickable penalties in search of a try so early in the game is not usually a good recipe for success in international rugby and it really kept the Lions in the game
DanWFree MemberOk, so I got it across a little strongly but something didn’t feel right with how Djok was playing in terms of his attitude and unforced errors. For example there were quite a few times when Djok was right at the net with an open court, weak return from Murray and somehow he plays it in to the net. Maybe he was exhausted and the strength of Murray showed it but Djokovic really wasn’t himself.
DanWFree MemberDjok definitely took a bung to throw that match. Some of the unforced errors were appalling- he really wasn’t anywhere near his usual self. Murray did play well but Djok didn’t look interested in winning at all
DanWFree MemberHibbard was out cold from the scrum engagement (his arms go floppy)- looks like a head clash with the Aus hooker
DanWFree MemberThe best I have come across has to be a boy called Dixie Pink Dicks. As if calling a boy “Dixie” or “Pink” wasn’t bad enough!
Other funny names going around are Deo (Deoderant or God?), Diesel, Rainbow… I could go on :D
I quite like “Bronwyn” or “fair of breast” is you prefer
Just to prove silly names get properly shared around, there is an academic I have come across called “Brick” :D
DanWFree MemberReducing the amount of overlap between inner and outer tubes is not necessarily an issue if the amount of initial overlap at the lower travel setting was in excess of what is required (if that makes sense!)
DanWFree MemberIt is a clear anti-Gatland stance :D
Lions get rid of a legend so Aus bring one in :D
DanWFree MemberShimano factory bolts are over torqued- the threadlock used is pretty irrelevant.
Medium strength Loctite is best in almost all applications. It acts as an anti-seize as well as holding the torque originally applied to the bolt better than other options
DanWFree MemberFox stanchion wear is dirt getting through the seals and not enough lubrication fluid/ dry foam o-rings inside. It would destroy any stanchion- it is more that you need to keep an eye on the level of lubrication fluid within Fox Forks a bit more than most.
DanWFree MemberAs far as I recall Loctite is better in every bolt situation bar none you would be tempted to use grease with. Happy to be corrected though as I can’t find the article :D
DanWFree MemberHow are people finding living with the 2013 Lefty? Is it still a bit demanding of attention or pretty much like any other fork in terms of maintenance now?
DanWFree MemberThe counter to the argument boshers don’t work would be to ask how did Scotland beat Aus? A pointless argument I’ll admit :D Nevertheless, I don’t think the NH have the guile to out-guile (or out-finesse) Aus so why try to beat them at their own game?
With 1/2p the way he plays (or is coached to play) is almost exclusively defensively- he covers a massive amount of ground to free up more players in the team for other duties.
DanWFree MemberWhat is your balanced/ finesse match day squad Wrecker?
A genuine question as I don’t think the other options add enough gain to counter the potential losses as a team. The more risky (?), exciting options are on the bench (Manu/ Tipuric/ Murray/ Gray/ Cole) to make for an exciting finish from a a solid start.
I would say the bench selection is looking pretty good too unlike the previous tests which was solid to be replaced with solid. At least this bench has attacking potential too
DanWFree MemberDoing it for the past is easy enough but it would be nice if there is something keeping track of the pennies as you go, to not have do do everything retrospectively. This is where the Lloyds Money Manager looks good.
The honest answer is probably most of our money is going on food shopping and then the odd large expenditure when a bit of bike breaks! Both of these could probably be reduced slightly but would probably be called “essential” in our eyes even thought they are not strictly.
DanWFree MemberCould it be possible the best players to make up the best Test team happen to have one majority nationality? No, no, no, crazy talk! Must be the Welshman from NZ’s fault instead :D
DanWFree MemberIt seems like a very well balanced team compared to the previous tests and given how the Lions pack were knocked around after the first 20 or so minutes last test surely that says you need a bit more power up front? The changes made were 50/50 as others have said and this Test selection actually seems to have a well thought out group of subs too.
As for the backs, well they haven’t really featured for either side (especially in the last test). Manu is not especially organised in defense so it doesn’t make much sense to start him- coming on in the 2nd half for impact does. Likewise with Murray. He is the 9 I would most like to see play but Phillips will not lose you the game when it is tight and physical in the first half even if he may not win it either. Murray coming on later when things have settled down makes a lot of sense too. All this talk of BOD at the breakdown is correct to an extent but then he has been one of the worst to adapt to refs interpretations and given away most penalties. Most people would agree that the hard running of Roberts should get them over the gain line more and little Jiffy has been outstanding this tour with his all round play (clearing out rucks, cutting off the wide Aus attacks coming up so quickly, offering a left footed option to clear the lines, turning over ball- lots of little subtleties which are valuable).
It isn’t necessarily an exciting, risky selection but I feel it is well balanced. The build up games showed some more exciting combinations but then these same combinations were shown up defensively which you can’t afford at this level. The selectors really can’t please everyone- lets just hope the Lions win at the weekend!
Not really too much to complain about unless you look at the nationalities of each player and have some bee in your bonnet about that :D
DanWFree MemberFair enough, I thought I must be missing something obvious!
Next problem is trying to get the chain line/ crank spacing correct. With the Rotor cranks fitted as per the instructions (with rgards to the spacers used) the 32T front ring is only a mm or so from the metal chainsuck plate and the chainguide rubs the inside of the chain. I have had to swap the Rotor spacers around so the DS has the thicker spacer to set the DS crank further out and away from the frame. Hmm….
DanWFree MemberI would also be interested to know the current laws/ guidelines on playing advantage and calling advantage over.
It seems to differ between referees but this may just be my cynical view. Most call advantage over when the ball is kicked regardless of the type or quality of kick for example whereas other referees look to see if significant territory was gained. Just one example but it still seems a little grey. Deliberate knock ons to end advantage seem to get mixed outcomes so most teams try to keep play going. So what is the proper laws/ guidleines?
DanWFree MemberNot having any luck with any of the wiziwig streams or any others I can find on google :(
Does anyone have a working link for outside the uk?
DanWFree MemberGreat game for tension and drama if not for electric skills. Watching the Lions is like watching Wales- unless they dominate absolutely every facet of the game you feel they have a pretty good chance of loosing (unlike the SH teams who can win on scraps by comparison)
DanWFree MemberThe answer to the OP is “One million times longer than Crank Brothers cleats” :)
DanWFree MemberThe problem with Lance is/ was Lance. His doping is not the reason many dispise him
DanWFree MemberEvans :) They have a good reputation ;)
Don Skene have better general stock of odd bits and bobs than most other places, Sunset is OK, Cyclopedia have been excellent for me whenever I needed them to sort something awkward like a sheared Ti crank bolt head :)
DanWFree MemberThese rights of way threads keep popping up more and more…
We are far too individual and fractured as mountain bikers and have no real voice in these issues- what organisation represents cycling inerests in rights of ways issues and how can some of these daft after thought laws be challenged?
I try to avoid footpaths but do use them with a bit of consideration as others have already said. It is footpaths through wide open flat fields I can’t understand. Keeping motorbikes off I can understand but when it is never used for anything agricultural I can’t see the negative inpact of riding a bike across. Obviously this is a very specific example but the list of RoW daftness is almost endless. Bridleways that end abruptly and turn in to footpaths is another favourite
DanWFree MemberThere are no implications further down the line, once it’s broken it’s broken! You cant make it worse! If you can get the knee moving and strengthened with the right physio / doctor / exercise, there is nothing to suggest you can’t function as you did before WITHOUT surgery!
This kind of logic would say once you have broken your arm there is no further problem as you can’t break it any more. You have to consider the impact to the functional ability of the joint and the possible secondary damage you can do to the joint and surrounding structures. There is plenty of evidence to suggest you will not function the same after a complete ACL rupture- even a cursory glance at the literature and research will tell you this.
Of course you will not rupture a ruptured ACL but the likelihood of developing severe osteoarthritis within a matter of years is very high. This is a big deal to be concerned about, particularly if active. The likelihood of doing some other secondary damage to the knee even before this (such as a meniscal tear) is also pretty high if you are reasonably active. Again, a meniscal tear is a big deal and the correlation between ACL rupture/ meniscus tears and early onset osteoarthritis is very high indeed.
There will always be the lucky few who have a complete ACL rupture and suffer no obvious negative effects (such as Jambalaya’s first rupture) but this is the exception. Bug the GP, see a surgeon
DanWFree MemberContrary to some of the advice here a complete ACL rupture is a big deal and if it were me I would want it sorted ASAP. The implications further down the line are potentially pretty severe so anything you can be doing to help yourself now for the long term can only be a good thing. Bug the GP and get the opinion of a surgeon ASAP
DanWFree MemberFor some reason I though Hook recently picked up an injury but can’t find anything about it. Hook and Hogg then :?
DanWFree MemberOn the subject of broken 10’s even Priestland is out injured again isn’t he? If there is any injury to Sexton or Farrel who is next in line? Burns?
DanWFree MemberBuying second hand requires patience if you want good value. There do seem to be a lot of people over-estimating the value of their things for sale but it was probably once their pride and joy plus ebay/ Paypal fees eat a lot of their profits. A nice person on STW is your best bet for value :D
DanWFree MemberThe only bad thing about Summer is overgrown cheeky singletrack :D
DanWFree MemberA water bottle just isn’t firm enough to do the job and cheap foam doesn’t last as others have said.
I use a 45cm foam roller from PhysioSupplies- well worth the extra few pennies.
DanWFree MemberDuckman- I believe kicking was also a large part of his employment too and that was yet another skill which eluded him at Cardiff ;) Watching Sam play was painful because nothing and I mean nothing ever went right for him during a match for the Blues. It is a very second string Force side tomorrow so I think Sam Norton Knight’s inclusion is probably an indicator of the side as a whole…
DanWFree MemberSam Norton-Knight better not play like he did for Cardiff Blues if the Lions want a testing match ;)
DanWFree MemberMerlin could be worth a look too, I built one up for my GF recently and it was great value
edit- I just check their site and they seem to have very limited frame availability. It could still be worth looking out for one second hand though
