When I bought my 3d telly in John Lewis, the geek there told me all the 3d tv’s in store were set up with the JL standard HDMI cables. They sell ones as 3d for twice the price. It don’t bother.

Carbon paste +2. Tighten them a little less than you think you need to!! Gentle squeeze tight, not hard turn tight!! Save the real grunting tight for bottom bracket cups :-))

Thanks for looking into this Brant :-)). Hiccups always happen, it’s how they are dealt with that count!!

Brant, don’t suppose you can chase up my order for a carbon 456 order no SO 0165651.

I spoke to somebody yesterday who said it was on Manual hold, even though it was now in stock, and he would dispatch it yesterday. That doesn’t seem to have happened.

    Ta.

Well, I was lured onto the On One site by the mega deals on carbon 456 frames. The £299 ones were out of stock, with unexpected stock date of 8 Apr. Hey presto, 8 Apr my half price frame comes into stock, and I should have it by the end of the week!!!!

    More of the same please!!!

IMHO you can’t over torque a bb cup, especially having tightened up one for a mate today, that he “thought was tight enough” but started creaking after a few rides.

Getting them off is a right bugger, but they don’t creak mid ride!!

I have an osprey, which is sooooooo comfy!! I put in as much water as I think I’ll need, no more. Usual pump, tube, multitool, iPhone with gps programme, and cash.

Chris, I should add that I have just sold my 2 120mm bikes and built up a Heckler and a carbon 456, to give me a greater spread of bikes, up to and including a Morzine trip.

First real outing for the Heckler last night, and I LOVE it!!!

    Total build cost £900.

Hi Chris, i reckon I ride pretty similar stuff to you. I dont reckon you need to look past the Canyon Nerve XC, especially if your budget is tight. Having ridden a 120mm FS for the last year, it will handle all you have stated and more!! The nerve 7 and 8 are great specced bikes at great prices. The AM didnt get as godd reviews as the xc.

Interesting, isn’t it!! Took my 2007 old style heckler out for its first big ride last night. According to the boys I was grinning all night!! The TT is noticeably shorter than my previous bikes – Ive gone up to an 80mm stem on it. A few guys had a go, and the general consensus was surprise how well it climbed!! It is built up pretty light with carbon bars/X0 cranks and 2012 revs – at 28.7 lbs.

I found I was deliberately riding at stuff to test it, and it gobbled it all up!!

I have a set on one bike, but would be interested in another set for my new build. Email me in my profile if you are interested.

I agree with 1850-1900g for the set.

I’ve just done the complete opposite, and changed a 120mm FS for a Heckler (now fully built) and an on one carbon 456 ( awaiting frame delivery!!). I reckon that spread covers all from local trails/south downs to Alps trips.

I am 5 11″ and 95 kg and have a med 2007 (old style) Heckler.

Just finished building my Heckler today – managed a 10 minute spin before school parents evening!!!! Heavenly

Well that was constructive, wasnt it??? I guess all the sensible people are actually out riding. Well, about 28.5 lb – maybe 28.4, maybe 28.6. Depending how many washers/shims/heli tape I use, knowing the exact weight of all the components I am using.

Any responses to the actual question???

I run them tubeless on one of my bikes and really like them. In the winter, they don’t like real deep mud, but they do shed quickly. Love them in the summer – no punctures in 4 months tubeless :-))

Since about 3 months ago, the main meals served in WTP are the same as the club meals. Everything else is the same as economy, but the contents of the china dish on your tray is the same as club – with a choice too :-)

Just a point of order, the food in WT plus is now the same main meals as Club. If the flight is busy, and they are looking to upgrade people (Economy is normally the first cabin to fill, they will oversell it and bump people up a cabin) if you are in WTP, your bump would be into club!!

So, Ive ended up with a 2007 Heckler frame with a DHX5 coil shock – for £300!! I’ll probably get an air shock for back home. Hope she rides as sweet as she looks!!

Midride – snickers/jelly babies from my pack.
Post ride – Coffee and Eccles cake or pint of Harveys Best, depending on day/night ride.

You may have guessed I’m not a racer :-)

A Picture paints a thousand words!!! For any tech walkthroughs, you can’t have too many pictures. If you are using video, make sure it is close up and detailed.

This site sounds great – good luck!!

Other ideas for tech issues – brake bleeding specific to each manufacturer.

I ride an RZ120-2 2011, and love it. The only weak specced part is the tyres fitted, that weigh almost 1kg each!!!! I now run it with Conti x-king pro’s and, wow, what a difference. I’m not a jumper, but I do like opening the taps downhill, and having fox both ends is great.

One of the lads in my group has a 2011 zesty and loves it. Little niggles like the saddle has already fallen apart, and his shoes rub the flared chain stays, leaving large patches of bare aluminium exposed. Having had a go on his, I honestly preferred the feel of the Dale, but so much is personal preference, and he adores his zesty.

I’m thinking of selling mine, but only because I have 2 similar bikes, and this one is the best, so will be the easiest to sell on, helping me towards my Yeti dream!!!!

Pnik, not sure how familiar you are with the SDW? The climbs are long but fairly non technical, likewise the downs. I would say definitely suiting light rather than gnarly. I would definitely not go for the 5 (great bike tho it is) as it will hurt on the climbs with no advantage on the long but not tech downs. If you can manage all day on the Duster, and you have it built light, perfect. If you were buying just for this event, I would recommend a sub 27lb 100/120mm FS, maybe even a 29er(never ridden one tho)

    dantsw13

It’s a 29er isn’t it? So bigger frame and wheels with a longer fork – always going to be heavier.
Add in a crudcatcher and bar ends(?????) and there you go!!

Not many bikes get to 24lbs!!

We are going last week of June, so the Morzine and Les Gets lifts are open. I am expecting a lot of climbing, hence the want for a bike I can build fairly light. I am never going to be a gnarly DHer, but do want to expand my horizons a bit.

    I see my options as:

    1. Keep my current bike. Cheapest option, and will be ok for most stuff out there. Leaves me with 2 similar bikes.

    2. Heckler frame to build up. Sounding like a good option. Great bike for alps, not thei lightest.

    3. Asr5 frame. Takes a 140mm fork, so would be better than my current bike out there, and would really suit back home. Maybe not the best alp bike, but better long term.

    4. 575 frame. Great alp bike. Reasonably light for its travel.
More than I would normally need back home, but would complement my Fuel ex really well. And it’s gorgeous!

So really, I am down to a heckler or 575 frame I think!! I travel to the states regularly with work, so have the option of buying there as well. Time to buff up my Dale for sale and keep my eyes open.

GSP1984 – don’t bother buying one. Get an old inner tube, open it up, cut about 12 inches of it, and attach it between the crown and the bottom of your head tube – voila for free!!!!

I was hoping the 3 options I had selected would be fine for regular uk riding too, especially as I will still have a really nice 120mm bike too.

What size frame are you after? Last year I did the same jump, and was undecided between a Spesh camber, ghost AMR 5900, and a cannondale rz120-2. Rode them all, all very similar, and I plumped for the ‘Dale. I’m about to sell it to move up to an all mountain trail bike. Probably going to be looking for about £900 including Fox fork/shock and lots of carbon upgrades!!

Oops!! Forgot to say its a medium!!

    dantsw13

Lots of good advice coming out!!! We are planning lift-assisted XC, with a little light downhill, and will have 4 days on the bikes :-)).

My second bike is a trek fuel ex I’ve built up – originally for someone else who ended up getting a very special- ized Xmas present – and I’ve decided that one is the keeper, due to liking both, and the higher resale value of the RZ. It seems silly to have 2 bikes so similar, hence the AM bike quest!!

I think my preferred options are either a Yeti 575 or ASR 5, or a Heckler. I think the Heckler frame is slightly heavier, but cheaper. Anybody tried either of the other 2, in the Alps in particular? Also, anybody happen to be selling a medium frame??????

    dantsw13

I do love my ‘Dale. It already runs tubeless with MK2 protections on Hope pro2/mavic xm819 ust wheels, has carbon 710mm bars – so only a dropper to add!! It’s in great nick and is a 2011 with nice Fox forks, so certainly would do the job. I just already have another 120mm FS, but not worth as much as the RZ, so I thought I might be able to “Explore my envelope” a bit more in the alps on a 150 bike.

Great stuff so far chaps, sometimes you need other opinions to take the blinkers off.

Heckler would be cheaper – is it as good a bike? Any age differences I need to know about for heckler frames?
