“If your looking for a tough bike then I wouldnt look at an intense.”

    Oh dear.

    Transition TR250

If I was just riding the downs I’d go for the latter but if anything else were involved I’d look at the first three options. An Intense SS1 is a great all round bike that goes up pretty well and is bloody fast on the downs but is quite small for the large size. At 6’2 sit on one before you buy.

Loads out there and you can probably get a good deal on a Lapierre Froggy at the moment which has scored some good reviews recently. Merlin are also doing some stunning deals on Commencals at the moment so worth a look also.

Thanks for the feedback chaps! Still in a quandry about upgrading my current bike, so still at the ‘research’ phase or saving up for a DH bike because I really, really want one.

Platform/pro pedal etc. usually are compression tunes specifically low speed damping. In 5.5inch mode you want to reduce it if you can.

It’s easier to keep it in the 6inch mode I reckon.

How stiff are the devilles compared to the 36s?

Ride the bike you like/can afford/always wanted. It really does not matter in the slightest. Just don’t stop yourself from getting it because of what other idiots say/think/write on the internet or in a magazine and certainly not because what you already have ‘does the job’. Blurgh!

Kryton, there is nothing wrong with your Tracer, it’s a superb bike, both mine were brilliant, just get your shock set-up properly. You’ve bought a top notch frame so spend some time getting set-up correctly. Spending £££ does not mean fit and forget.

The issue with the RP23 largely (in most cases at least) depends on your weight. For the heavier amongst us (that would include me – 14st without kit or indeed anything) the RP23 would blow through it’s travel at the drop of a hat or rather a twig. It did not work well on either of my Tracers. Both were set up in 6inch mode using a Van36 up front.

Horses for courses, some like it and some don’t.

Anyway, this thread is not about the RP23 it’s about what Kryton57 can do about his shock. My advice, call TF Tuned.

Mine was great but then I was running a Bos Stoy which can be custom tuned to suit VPP bikes and has independant low and high speed compression adjustements.

Persevere with your shock tunning and speak to the guys at TF Tuned if you are not sure.

As ever most things are a compromise but it sounds like you need to make some adjustments to your compression tune if your shock has that facility.

    FWIW I found the RP23 cr*p.

Search through ebay.com (not co.uk). I cannot remember the name of the guy that sells them but you will need to contact him direct. You could always contact the UK importers of Intense who may sell to you direct.

Sunline V1 745mm here. Very nice and at about the limit for trail riding in terms of width. Easton Havocs are worth a look and can be had for decent price from Merlin especially if you sign up to there VIP ‘club’.

Using the new fancy 2.5 Minion DHF 3C things for both trails and DH. They’re very good and roll well enough. They seem quite predictable and haven’ let go yet. Used High Rollers a couple of years ago and thought they were good also but not as fast. I run about 28psi in the front and 30 or 32 psi in the rear depending on what I am up to.

Simple: Is what you’re buying massively cheaper and factor in VAT and duty and or is it only available in the States and you really must have it. If it’s either of those then you may as well.

My Intense SS1 frame cost £850 delivered. They were 2k in the UK at the time.

As far as I am aware you are not allowed bikes on Scarfel. You would have to climb Helvelyn instead. Did it few years ago non-stop. It took us about 26hours. We used an estate car which was a mistake, borrow or hire a pickup so you don’t have disassemble/reassemble a boot load of kit at each stop.

Mixed reviews then. Most of mags love them but real world opinions seem to differ.

Nothing wrong with the SXs they’re just bit, grey… and it’s good to try different stuff out from time to time.

Havens come in 20mm front and 135*12 rear, just what I need. SXs are 2009 so effectively the latest versions. No issues with the hubs (assuming the rear) fixed using blue loctite.

I’ve had two. They were excellent and are missed. SS1 is better though IMHO. I’ll dig out some pics later on.

Loving my The Ones. Pads are lasting well, feel is excellent, stopping power is superb, comfort of the lever is excellent. Weight is also good. They needed bleeding which was a faff but easy enough. Also, buy from here. Excellent service and cheaper than anywhere else I have seen.

Very sorry to hear about your friend, that’s terrible and I hope he makes a full recovery and that the driver is dealt with accordingly within the bounds of the law.

I’ll get to work any which way I choose though.

When moving the fluid from the caliper to the lever did you have the lever closed?

32-11to32. I use a Blackspire downhill ring at the front. Cheap(ish) and last plenty long enough.

Get the Easton Haven kit from Merlin. I signed up to there free VIP members thing and got my Haven stem for £61 posted. It’s very nice. I use Sunline bars though so cannot comment of Haven bars but I too am paranoid about carbon bars so I would get the normal ones and save the £45 for other shiny things.

I went with a 55mm Easton Haven bought from Merlin in the end. Tonight was it’s maiden voyage following an off a few weeks ago. It was a good decision. The steering felt more responsive/direct than before which is good as I’m running a 65.5 HA. In all the bike feels really stable, corners like a housefly and copes pretty well with twisty windy trails. Hopefully I’ll be well enough soon to hit the local DH spot to see how it all feels over some jumps and the like but at the moment that would cause me too much pain; still hurting from the afore mentioned off.

    Cheers for the input folks.

Very happy with my ‘The Ones’. But they did need bleeding from the box and do require careful alignment. Great feeling brake though and very, very powerful. Bought from ebay at quite a bit lower than the UK RRP.

Nonsense. You get there much quicker, although there is not actually that far away, with a much higher risk of serious injury. It’s much more fun

I have a similar issue to you but with extras. If nothing is broken and going by the last time I did something similar, about three weeks.

Deep heat, baths and trying not to drink too much beer and eat too much crap should help speed things up a little.

I’m trying to think how it will feel on the bike… And am struggling to get my head around whether I will feel more forwards i.e. if I am sat in the saddle will I feel like there is more weight moving through into wrists and if I am riding the braver stuff will I naturally shift my weight further back. Hmmm.
