My 2017 SB6 has been the most hassle free bike I’ve owned (previous bikes include various intenses and a nomad 3, amongst other things), despite it’s numerous attempts to maim it’s loving and caring owner. The switch link is a doddle, you just pump grease into it. The rest of it has survived two winters on the same bearings. After cleaning I let it dry in the house which seems to preserve bearing life by some margin.

I’d love a SB165 but it’s a lot of cash. I’ll wait a little while for some deals to turn up. Maybe.

“Yeti – too many dodgy suspension designs which are just trying to be different and meaning the basic design and qc go out the window. Oh and the stupid turquoise thing. I quite like the logo kind so never say never.”

Best suspension platform i’ve ridden to date (sb6c). Nicely made too and tough (enormous off a few weeks back; it survived and I’m still recovering). Plenty will disagree I’m sure and post back links to dead Yetis etc.

Anyway, nothing further to add to my list.

PS. why do people not like Audis ? Should we add cars I’d never buy to the lists as well ?

Anything that looks odd or a hardtail or I can’t get a deal on. Never pay RRP, ever!

PS – very few pedal strikes with the air shocks either.

    Lowey,

Add more low speed compression. One or two clicks at a time and pedal over the sections of trail where you are getting the most strikes. I wouldn’t dial them all out as you will make the ride too harsh.

I had a Nomad 3 (fantastic bike) which has a very low bb. I was running 175mm cranks and rarely had pedal strikes. I was running an ohlins coil though which is a very well behaved shock. I ran various air shocks on the bike for a while because that is what I had and also it saved a bit of weight. Never again. They are, imho, just not worth it. If you can borrow a coil shock do. But in the meantime re-vist your set up. Cheaper than a new frame.

Just trying to help and save you some cash!

If you’re getting loads of pedal strikes I’d suggest rear suspension set up is all wrong or worse the shock tune is rubbish. As annoying as it may seem VPP bikes are super sensitive to set up.

Spend some time getting the sag correct, then move onto the rebound – do a search in youtube for the curb test. If you can adjust the low speed compression with your shock, try adding a little more than normal and then hit the trails and see where you are. Don’t neglect your fork settings either.

It’d be worth spending some time before getting rid and shelling out again!?!

But on a more positive note, I’m sure you will all be pleased to hear that my V10 survived my ‘off’ at Aston hill yesterday.

    Fantastic in every way.

GT Xiang. Nicely made, looked good. Biggest pile of poo it’s ever been my misfortune to swing a leg over. It tried to kill me on several occasions. A genuine piece of nastiness that should never have seen the light of day. Utter shite.

On local trails I use the on your left or right thing (mostly to walkers). But again, looking back at videos of others, I should and could have been more purposeful in calling out ‘rider’. The guy I did get past moved over after hearing a very middle class ‘I’m behind you, but I’m not entirely sure how I’m going to get past you’ comment.

    You live and learn.

    I have axes to grind.

Stage 1. Started well. Overtook someone and then got stuck behind someone who went so slow at one point I had to stop! Caught him up again where they stopped and got off on the finish line. WTF!?! I was quite cross.
Stage 2. Was okay but forgot to put my gloves on so spent the whole time thinking about that, plus half way down I got stuck behind someone else.
Stage 3. Nearly crashed big time. Feet off pedals audible ‘ooos’ from spectators.
Stage 4. Forgot to pedal on the latter half so lost loads of time. Annoying as looking at my time I’d covered the tech sections well.
Stage 5. Awesome fun. Fast but could have been faster and made a big mistake going into a tight corner.
Stage 6. Fast but made a few dubious line choices. Could have been faster.

I need to get better at the whole ‘rider’ thing, rather than being nice and not forcing folks to move over so next year (if I do it) it’ll be a case of **** ’em! Both riders knew I was there but that’s racing I guess!?! And if I do, it will be at my own pace inbetween the stages. I need lots of rest and proper food by all accounts.

Anyway, organisation was great, trails were great, climbs were sh1te but no avoiding them so I’ll fit more appropriate gearing next time and the folks I did speak to were great. Loved the comment from one chap to his mate pleading with him not to have children as he was too thick. Made me laugh.

Buy the one you like the most, it’s your cash! Nothing wrong with being ‘overbiked’ that’s just BS, they all work pretty well these days apart from those that live at either end of the spectrum.

Onzadog – Part worn 2.3 Minion DHF exo thingies front and rear. I don’t usually ride rocky terrain (Aston Hill has some but not prolonged) so plenty of life in them to ruin during this ridiculous race I have been persuaded to enter. My legs, knees, toes, arse etc. are aching just thinking about it.

You may also have air stuck in the system despite your best efforts, most likely lurking in the caliper. Try leaving the bike overnight with a ziptie holding the offending lever pulled right back to the bars.

Sounds odd (perhaps) but worked for me. Overnight the air in the system traveled back up into the cylinder (well, that’s what I suspect happened). A quick top up and a nice firm lever was had.

The other thing I have tried is (over the weekend after replacing a hose on tech3/e4 combo) was making sure the caliper was at the same height as the lever when bleeding. It took all of 5mins to bleed and the lever was spot on from the outset.

    Good luck!

Poor dog. Sounds like a rushed and possibly convenient decision.

My cats routinely assault me, my wife and the kids for crimes that range from ‘not feeding them quick enough’, ‘sitting on the wrong part of the sofa’, ‘stroking them’, ‘being near them’, ‘moving them’, ‘walking past them’, moving yourself’ etc. There is often claret and tears. But they’re cats, it’s what they do, we accept it. Dogs growl and snap when they’re upset or feel threatened. They’re dogs, it’s what they do.

For point of reference I’ve been around dogs all my life, been bitten many times, nearly always my own fault; except for the two instances involving Yorkies. Both those little b******s can burn in hell for all I care, but they were not put to sleep.

You’re just suffering from ‘iwantanewbike’ syndrome. Riding a Nomad is not a chore, up or down. Put a better rear shock on it if you must. Mmm, ohlins.

I’ve had one fall apart in my hands – replaced under warranty. Another lunched itself big time. All installed correctly using the proper tools, torque settings and with a faced BB shell. Neither had done many miles The one I had on my downhill bike lasted forever but that bike was very, very well looked after and lived indoors. Not buying one again. Cheap Shimano SLX/XT all the way from now on.

Their headsets on the other hand are fantastic and represent excellent second hand bargains as new they are frighteningly expensive! Their hubs are items of joy!

Dropped my 5s out of a first floor window onto bricks, nothing happened. Massive off from the bike, phone actually bent but the screen remained intact… I use a crappy silicone case bought from Maplins.

    Take the 7 back.

Get the best you can afford and don’t be afraid of carbon, they’re pretty tough these days. But, like anything, there will be examples of where it has gone badly wrong; I find this place can be like looking at the 1star reviews on Amazon where something has an average of 4.5stars.

YT, canyon all good but also cheap nukeproofs should not be overlooked. Plenty of 2nd hand choice on pinkbike as well.

Just over 6ft in my socks here and ride a large with a 55mm stem. I don’t like really long bikes and like to be a little more forwards. But it’s horses for courses I guess. Gun to my head I’d say large as most others have already said.

Intense M9 was great, session 9.9 was wonderful, demo 8 corners very well. I miss the trek.

He should really try and ride them before buying. At the moment the yts have a further 600euro off of the price. Only a crazy person would ignore that.

Too many to list. Latest in haste decision is up for sale on Pinkbike.com. Most of my cash has been wasted on cars and modifying them. I remember a lovely 10k bill to put a Honda engine in the back of a lotus Elise a few years back and that wasn’t the end of it! Bloody quick tho 😯 !

Beyond that, not buying shares when I should have done, lack of pension (again, money spent on cars) etc. About the only sensible thing I have done with money is buy a house that will be worth a fortune in the very near future when they have finished the cross rail. I’ve jinxed it now…
