Back in Uni I used play a bit with the stock markets. I used to subscribe to a monthly newsletter and after initially being very sceptical I started buying their tips. My Best Buy was Zerco (Baltimore tech) that I bought for £3.50 per share and sold after 12 months for £21 per share. They went on to a high of £140 per share after getting a White House contract. Had I held the stock I would’ve been able to buy a house, instead I bought a car. I did lose on some stocks but I more than made up for it with the winning stocks. It’s ok to take tips as long as you do further research.

Once the kids are full time in school I will look to getting back into it. So can you keep this thread going for another couple of years please….

Balance bike. Mine is riding without stabilisers at 3.5 years old. I suggest taking the pedals and stabilisers off whatever bike they have and give them a push. They’ll be balancing in no time, then put the pedals back on.

Sorry for the thread hijack but PJay we should meet up at Castell Coch in the New Year for a mini lesson in small/medium drops. I learnt by just following some stranger around that area. It worked for me it might work for you!

P-Jay, are you Cardiff based? I learnt drops around Castell Coch. Much easier and less intimidating than BPW with drops varying from ankle to chest high!

Duh…Didn’t think of a skills/coaching course. Will get a voucher for BPW….with extended time limit just in case we can’t get there in the next 12 months!!

Yes, change over the levers! Quite important!!! Anyway, he was stuffed, didn’t know his left from his right, was all over the place, did 2 runs and bailed out back to the snow…

I had a lesson with Griff and really enjoyed. I went to learn ‘bigger’ drops. He sorted out my technique and though I didn’t do any massive drops I felt far more confident afterwards and I’m glad I had the lesson. £145 is a bit on the high side though.

I have no complaints about the service but was embarrassed when they couldn’t be bothered to change the brakes over on the hire bike for my Finnish mate, particularly after he emailed them to warn them beforehand and they agreed. On the day they were just ‘too busy’. I think that is terrible service and dangerous.

Just bought a Diamond Back for my 4yr old. 51-55cm. Looks good and we’ll see if it’s a good fit on Christmas Day!

A friend of mine from Finland had dodgy customer service from them also. He booked online and emailed them asking to swap over his brakes on his hire bike. They said no problem. When he picked up his bike the brakes were not swapped over and on asking them again to switch over they said they were too busy. He did 2 runs, didn’t feel comfortable so left disgruntled and £150 poorer.

They are so busy customer service is obviously not their top priority.

It is easy online BUT it takes ages and hassle to register (well it did a couple of years ago). I’d suggest register ASAP and then you’ll have the rest of January to file. They only really ask for incomings and outgoing and don’t need a breakdown. I was surprised how straightforward it was after the initial set up

My thoughts; I really enjoy reading the print version particularly the exotic rides that I can only dream about doing. I also appreciate the honest words on these rides and that not everything is sweet and smelling of roses. This months Mont Blanc tour described as ‘white mountain black mood’ reminds me of my classic ride of Col du Cou in Morzine; happy, rain, wet, moody, tired, loving it, falling off, failed brakes, loving it, beer, and plenty of smiles at the end. Real world rides I appreciate.

This is my go to website and only forum/social media I participate in. Rarely read the PDF version though.

Pallets? We have an open fire and I use old pallets cut into strips and small blocks. They’re free and you find them everywhere.

For beginners it is good, for intermediates and advanced i’d save my money for next year. I went there for my first skiing holiday and it was excellent. My wife who was a good skier did all the runs in one day.

Hot Fiat, have you considered a specialist family company like Esprit. We have been with them twice and, with their in-house crèche, childcare was sorted. We thoroughly enjoyed and, though we are having a year off this year from them we will be booking Esprit again next year.

Just booked Wednesday- Saturday in Morzine, flying into Geneva, in early February. Which is a good reasonable transfer company?

Last time we booked with Morz Express and the snowy and dark conditions were obviously not enough of a challenge for the child that was driving us as he didn’t stop playing with music on his phone. Needless to say that we weren’t impressed with the service/driving so will book someone else this time. Can anyone recommend a firm?
    Cheers

Horrible news, I felt sick reading your post. Wife had miscarriage and she must’ve cried everyday for a month afterwards. No advice I can give that hasn’t been already said above except give each other plenty of hugs whilst lying on the sofa watching crap tv.

Mine started at 2 but he got his balance bike (hand-me-down) at about 18 months. He’s quite shy and timid so for the first 6 or so months he liked to play with the bike and clean it, but wouldn’t sit on it.

We bought an islabike for him when he was 3 and again he took about 6 months to ride it properly. He liked to have it around and would show everyone the pedals and then about 2 weeks ago he rode properly for the first time. Now he’s brilliant and all his friends can’t believe he’s riding without stabilisers at 3.5 years old.

    I’d say buy…

I used to use SEO but Google do regular updates that hit us from page 1 into oblivion. Now I use Adwords and pay google direct …… and it actually works! Similar sales to similar costs. You only need to watch a couple of adwords videos to get the feel of it and you’re away.

Someone mentions Salisbury Christmas Market. Don’t do it. I know many who have done it and did not return. Winchester is better but still not as good as Cardiff or Bath. Worcester is good but you need to pack down each night which is hassle. Lincoln is probably the best of the shorter markets.

    Cheers Flan.

I did put a couple of the massive wineracks in to galleries etc but it didn’t really work out due to the weight and awkwardness of the slate. I also wholesaled to shops but that was a lot of work for very little return as they want to buy at approx half of retail price. They will also say that they will buy loads off you every month but this never materialises. Are you prepared to sell your clocks at 50%?

Saying that if you have 100+shops it will be worthwhile. But getting to 100+ shops is the hard work – lots of trade shows all over the country. A guy on the markets used to provide his product to over 650 shops including the big department stores, and was employing 17 people. His turnover was huge but he lost a contract and decided to pack in wholesaling and just does the markets. Now he has no stress, no employees to worry about, does not need to pander the needs of shops and more importly earns more now than he did at his busiest.

If you do decide to go down the markets route you need much more range (there are a couple of stalls around that sell clocks)and you could do something similar to my range but whether it’s cost effective is another matter. Don’t worry about social media, I have never done it.

Regarding this year’s markets there is more chance that you will get on in Cardiff than Bath and if you do a market in one of those wooden sheds be sure to bring your display to the front of the shed. All the newbies usually set up with a couple of tables inside the stall. This does not work as the public do not walk into the stall, as they don’t want to feel under pressure to buy. So take your display to them and they can clearly see your products from the pavement.

My whole business is based around fairs, mainly Christmas markets. I used to do loads but now only do Cardiff (starts on Nov10) and Bath (starts Nov24) both of which account for about 75% of my salary. You need to contact a couple of markets and though they will be full you need to get on the waiting list as there are always people that pull out last minute.

I don’t do FB, twitter or instagram (I can barely cope as it is). I get some sales through my website (am I allowed to put it in…..www.welshslateshop.co.uk). Prices range from £5 to £100+ which is important for the markets and make sure you have enough stock. My first day on a Christmas stall in Cardiff I sold out of everything. The best markets will cost loads and there is a premium on the best locations. I always think cheap rents on some markets are cheap for a reason.

Any other advice you need just email me through my site.

    Good luck
