Is the Race worth the extra hundred notes for the Fox fork over the Reba on the Team model?

When I was 17, I was in the Air Cadets and got asked to assist with the Queen’s Birthday Honours presentations (Cardiff Castle). My one and only important job was to stand in a room with her and two of her aides minutes before the start of the Welsh BBC news and give her the nod at the exact second to leave, walk through a porch and down the steps which was being filmed live on tv.

I was dying for a fart and let it out gently in approximately 7-8 tiny peeps. It was absolutely violent and immediately overpowering and I noticed one aide looking a the other accusingly, the other looked back in a similar manner and I stood sheepishly in the corner checking my watch. It was obvious when HRH smelt it, as without saying a word, she promptly left the room and stood in the porch.

I’ve designed a serious set of stairs shortly to be built in Port Talbot. It’s at the pedestrian access to the Tata steelworks at the bridge over the railway. Will be 5 flights of 13 steps, dropping 8m with only a 35 degree dogleg part way down. It’s the most current regulations will allow.

I’ll be “testing” it before the bridge opens, and have made sure the Tata steelworks security turnstile is after the stairs, therefore putting the stairs on the public side 😀

I do have a 3 litre air bottle (breathing apparatus) that is rated at 209 bar (tried previously with a truck horn), but it was far too heavy and unstable to ride with.

Nope, just half asleep drivers during the morning commute.

Forgot to say that it needs to be suitable for all bikes too. Last year ranged from carbon road bikes to full-sus and the odd 20 year-old found it in a canal bike. There was even an Aussie muppet who did it ss (and completed).

Right, I’m home now after being checked out. I went to my GP on the way home and he know’s I won’t go to A&E, so he checked me out. Everything is fine, apart from a bit of a bruise on my head and near my jaw, the bleeding from my ear is from within the outer ear and just a bit of a split from the bash, so nothing serious. The bloody nose looked more serious than it was as my scarf caught all the blood and spread it round my face. The bloody mouth was just my split lip and from between a few of my teeth. Judging from the state of my helmet, GP reckons it saved my life.

Since I’m not going to die, time for some cider.

Ok, I get the message – I’ll cycle over there on my way home. I’ll let you know the outcome in the morning.

    Cheers guys.

Nothing to see, except a bit of blood on my black wooly hat and scarf. I’ve had a shower in work now and a sit down and am starting to feel a bit better.

A&E in Cardiff? Not a chance, I’ll be in the waiting room until Boxing Day.

No clear fluid, just nice bright red blood. When I took the wooly hat and scarf off, I had to wring out the hat as there was about as much from my ear as from the nosebleed.

Other than a bit of a headache, I’m fine though.

The only c0ck of a bus driver I have encountered was the one who tried, intentionally to run me over as I "shouldn't be cycling on this road" (4 months after the no-cyclists signs were removed following the end of the roadworks necessitating them).

Fortunately, after I wrenched his door open and got on, I only just resisted the urge to punch him. The cctv at the junction and passenger statements were sufficient for his dangerous driving charge.

…..need to change the thread to "how am I going to get 70 bikes to Holyhead".

With massive interest, there are now loads of people who want to take part. I'm looking at a coach, plus a 17 seater with big trailer, plus a 7.5t lorry, plus a car and another big trailer. I still think the bikes will be a squeeze though

Any better ideas for getting the bikes up there from Cardiff?

The vehicle hire is at a well reduced rate – 3 days of two 17 seaters and a 7.5 tonner with insurance and CDW for £650+vat. The hire co. are doing the insurance as a freebie, as we have a big contract with them and they would like to support the charity, but have to charge cost for the vehicles as they sub them in from elsewhere. Unfortunately, company insurance only covers hire cars.

The 7.5 tonner will also need to carry tents, kit and beer for 37 people. Bike bags are great, as is any old carpet, rugs, cardboard and blankets. They should easily fit now.

    Alex,
Yes, this is going ahead, but limited by logistics. We had 70 names, which would have required 4 minibusses and the mother of all transits to take the bikes up (even considered a 40' shipping container).

When we liaised with SW police, they suggested limiting numbers to avoid the need for marshalls, road closures etc. So we're aiming for the first 34 riders (plus 3 drivers).

As you know, some people we work with are fairly precious about their bikes, hence the importance of getting transport and details right. We have now booked 2no. 17 seaters and a 7.5tonne tail lift lorry. This will take 34 bikes and all our camping kit in a single layer and also has side rails for tying down, bungees etc. Everyone will need to bring a blanket or sheet for wrapping though.

Matt B will issue details this week and a modest deposit will reserve a place. I'm doing the route recce on the 20th in a hire car (209 miles of Welsh rally in a 1.4 nissan note!) with one of my grads reading pace notes. Yes, we have a job number to book it to in work time, and a 4star hotel in Wrexham so we can get an early start!!!

Accommodation for the trip is booked – Valley of the Rocks campsite on the Friday night and a camping barn outside Aberystwyth on the Saturday. Should be awesome.

The charity is EFOD, Engineers for Overseas Development. The money is funding an orphanage and medical centre in Soroti, Uganda.

    Hmm, bu99er.

Yes, it is 34 as in thirty four. No, I'm not attending a race, just a sponsored ride from Holyhead to Cardiff (in preference to our usual route to London).

We did have 70 applicants, but have limited it to the capacity of two minibusses and a van (3 drivers).

Last year we got 9 in a transit with plenty of spare room, but these were lengthways and would ideally have been stacked sideways to fit more in.

We have at least that many bikes in our carpark today (plus my tandem and bike trailer) perhaps a trial run is in order?

Any ideas about other ways to get 34 bikes to holyhead? Train? Courier? Does anyone make a 34 bike boot-rack?

Ahhh, bu66er. Snapped the seatpost. Seatpost in vice, heated frame up, turned frame – seatpost bust!

Looks like it's time to drill it out. I measured the bit that remains in the frame. It's 210mm, bloody shortarse previous owner.

I want to keep the frame, the post is scrap. The corroded bit is stuck more solid than the torsion capacity of the post. I gripped the seatpost in my vice and turned the frame, but the post just twists.

I once bought a Masda 323 for £450, used it for 7 months (earning £1200/month or so in mileage allowance doing Cardiff-London 2-3 times a week). Then put a new MOT on it and sold it for £700.

It was very reliable, 80's handling was a giggle and the only car I ever made a profit on.

I'm aiming for a sidecar with separate cranks and drive to the sidecar wheel, from a recliniing seat. Like sort of a recumbant welded onto a bike.

Admittedly mine was almost self inflicted. I've a whole load of 10 year old tyres with little wear, that I'm wearing out on the commuter. The one that went bang was way down on tread, but blew a hole in the sidewall. On inspection, the rubber is like a 10 year old elastic band.

Will check all my remaining old tyres and may be time to bin some.

This happened to me (sort of) in a Vauxhall dealer when I was 17 and my mate was buying a Corsa.

I sat in the back of a Tigra and commented on how shite it was to the salesman when my mate slammed the boot shut (he'd been looking at the boot space). It came down right on my head and put the back window straight through. When the salesman briefly said we'd have to pay for the damage, I he was swiftly told to **** off.
