So does everyone diagnosed with cancer (and other major illnesses) in Singapore see the specialist immediately irrespective of their financial status?

I think it would be wonderful if we could do this too so no-one would have to wait to be seen or rely someone who is in the system queue jumping their relatives.

Can’t help feeling that Fox forks are rubbish, I have 2006 Pikes that have been serviced twice, 2008 Revalations that have been serviced once and 2003 Bombers that have been serviced once. None have any particular wear to the stanchions.

Are we seriously saying that you would have to lift the fork seals and service them halfway through a 24 hour race to comply with the warranty?

But even prior to the western diet they were dying much earlier, usually from cancers or circulatory diseases, once environmental deaths were accounted for. Lung cancer especially was a problem, it’s theorised that this was a result of indoor fires with poor ventilation.

The woman on the radio seemed very anti-carb which was why I mentioned it, I still feel that it’s the availability of refined carbs which causes us the most problems in the developed world.

The Brick – I’m overweight and fit, honest.

OK then, I used to be fit.

Can someone then explain why Eskimo and other Inuit peoples who eat low carb, high fat, high protien diet are all fat with much shorter lifespans than even their obese neighbours in North America?

I’m not yet sold on the carb/obesity link, more on the too much avaialble carbs in the west link personally, especially given that carbs form 90% of the African diet yet they are not often fat due to lack of availability of food.

    deluded,

The only way you could know (prove) that it worked would be to go back in time and go throught the same time period again without the treatment and compare the outcomes, other wise we have anecdotal singular evidence which, when taken together with lots of other singular events can seem to provide a credible body of evidence that a process or intervention works.

Given that it is not possible to time travel as far as i know then the next best thing is to provide the treament to as large a number of people as possible with a similarly large group as control with no intervention.

Comparing these group outcomes will indicate with some level of certainty whether an intervention was effective or not unlike singular events.

For example the oldest recorded woman was a lady by the name of Jeanne Louise Calment who died at the age of 122. She smoked all her life (well gave up at 119 cos she couldn’t see well enough to light up) and ate a minimum of 2lbs of chocolate per week.

Hence on a sample of one we can show that eating excessive amounts of chocolate and smoking is very healthy and will help you live to a great age.

    molgrips,

You’ll be pushed to find much (if any) credible research showing it does although anecdotal evidence is high. If you can find any pertinant research then I’d be interested to see it.

I’m not even saying it doesn’t work, what I am saying is that many people practicing have done an on line diploma or similar and are registered with an organisation which has no real credibility.

Anyhows its pontless debating cos that will likely lead to arguing, no one will be convinced of the others points, and we’ll all have to go off and sulk.

Richard Bandler in an interview I heard can guarantee to cure schizophrenia with one or two sessions of neuro-linguistic programming and he’s the founder of the institute which issues the diploma’s and registers people to practice.

Just because there is a registration system, courses and professional sounding qualifications doesn’t mean shit to me unless it has been systematically and scientifically proven to work.

    Mr Woppit

Perhaps deregulation/privatisation has just saved you £20 per month OR it has been costing you an excess of £20 per month for all the time you were with your previous supplier.

Given that we don’t know what your bills would have been if the utilities had not been privatised you could be much worse off than the other Mr Woppit living in the alternate universe where privatisation never occurred.

Not arguing for or against privatisation/nationalisation – just a thought.

I sometimes find free food from mother nature when out walking in the countryside, not sure I should help myself to farmers crops, steal a sheep or shoplift in Tesco.

So you’ve gone to a private forest, parked outside, ridden the trails, will be back for more but object to contributing towards the trail development and upkeep?

Is this not just the message of capitalism

Yes, and that was what I was alluding to, just in the context of the OP rather than the wider issue.

Personally I abhor this culture of constant upgrading and the way it’s sold to us as the only way to become a worthwhile person. Most people seem to believe that what you have is the most important thing about you. Unfortunately, even those on the lowest incomes are believing this shite, and some are either getting into ridiculous amounts of expensive debt or committing crimes to keep up with the ficticious, marketting created Jones’s.

I am in no way condoning the criminality of rioting and looting any more than any other criminal behaviour, although there does seem to be a general acceptance of the criminality of politicians, big business and celebs within the social structure.

Anyhow, **** all me spouting this will do, it won’t change a thing and will just get me hot under the collar so I am off to wash my bike instead.

Didn’t see it and the video link not working on the BBC site so only read the brief summary.

If he is saying that whites are rioting because they are acting more like blacks then yes he is being racist.

If he is saying that the black american gangster rap culture that has been so used by the media/marketing et al, and has been embraced by white youths as something to aspire to, has some blame in a bling is everything, look after yourself, sod everyone else culture – he may have a valid point.

My eldest is coming up 15 and we occasionally allow him a glass of beer, youngest is 11 and he gets a shandy with 20% beer/80% lemonade. Personally I feel that making alcohol something special and a right of passage into adulthood is more likely to have them binge drinking at 16/17 years old (or younger), like many of the kids at the local high school.

Think he meant small front, small back.

Use the 3 or 4 largest on the back with the small ring, 3 or 4 smallest on ther front with the large chainring, and pretty much owt with the middle ring.

For me it would be a gradual process:

Get a decent rear wheel, keep servicing the front one every couple of months for zero cost except gease and mebbe loose bearings, softer spring for the fork, service brakes including lubing pistons, if still no good replace front first (even a poor rear disc is likely to be satisfactory with easy rear wheel lockup), replace back later if really needed.

The above can be done over a couple of months as money appears, classifieds is likely to be very fruitful.

Most important thing, you have a nice bike with decent if not stellar bits – enjoy riding it, it will still be much better than stuff ridden when I started in the 90’s.

To be fair TJ, she uses that expression with you so often that it sometimes seems like she has a weird form of tourettes. 😀

Perhaps she was talking to you about something else.

My dentist is always on time and i’m an NHS patient. When I needed shedloads of work doing she pushed all the appointments and treatments into one episode of care so i only had to pay the £186 (around) once.

Regarding GP’s some problably do faff, others are still old school and fitting in urgent, and often non-urgent, house calls so may be running late cos of that. The pressure to see patients once that days list is full can also contribute and, again, this varies practice to practice. Patients sometimes wish to discuss numerous issues even though the time slot is allocated for one problem. Could be a multitude of genuine, understandable reasons or just a disorganised or workshy tosser.

I work closely with GP’s every day and they, like other groups, range from the brilliant to some who I wouldn’t trust to tell me the right time.

Overall I quite like the NHS

30mpg? Are you serious? I used to get better than that in an old banger 20 years ago – I find it hard to believe that many people are spending 20p a mile on fuel when so many people either have small petrol cars or large diesels, either of which will get close to my figures.

I run a petrol Mondeo and 30-35mpg is about average, worse if in urban traffic. Mind you I usually do better than Ford reckon, they say 25.2mpg for town driving.

So I would say the claim that lots of people are spending 20 pence per mile on fuel, and 50 pence per mile overall, is justified.

No choice but to own a car as i am a community nurse and my contract stipulates it.

Hence the fixed costs are there whether I use the car privately or not; so I only pay for petrol and additional wear/tear. To leave it at home and use public transport would be silly as, for the four of us, it would cost a fortune.

I’ve still never figured out where all the worlds richest nations borrow all this **** money from. It can’t be from the poorer ones, Lloyds TSB don’t have that much dosh and my grandad keeps his under the bed.
