Wife’s ward has double shifts of just under 15 hours with 90 minutes of unpaid breaks if they can get them. From a value for money point of view it suits the Trust as each nurse cover 6 shifts per week rather than 5 and is actively encouraged. Each ward could, if all staff agreed to this pattern, lose 2,3 or more nurses – just think of the efficiency savings.

Suits a lot of staff too cos they get more days off.

That’s a study into the mechanism of the amyloidosis of phenylalanine at high concentrations in the small number of people who are unfortunate enough to lack the enzyme responsible for breaking down the essential amino acid phenylalanine.

It’s describing how the damage to those individuals might occur should they consume this protein.

    Hardly any.

I have 2 teenage boys so waste is usually about zero – they eat **** everything including some stuff I am sure is actually inedible.

When the wife bakes, the tray of buns can be consumed without ever leaving the cooling rack unless armed guards and tripwires are deployed.

It’s like living with mobile wate disposal units wandering about the house.

Munro biker, you will have to help me out. I have fallen down many garden walls pissed

Jeez, I still remember that night, especially me, my missus and your mate, Murray??, spending 20 minutes trying to convince you to get in my car for a lift to the B abd B you were staying in.

At the pace you were going you’d probably still be walking there now.

Hope the future brightens up for you, mate. Sounds like you’ve been through the grinder.

Its not just that though, its grip mid-corner etc etc. For the cost of two takeaway meals you get 2xbetter tyres for 1,000’s of miles of mixed driving.

I agree totally and as Tyre Press reported – in the lateral gip test the Arrowspeed were found to be joint third place with Goodyear on 0.75g.

Arrowspeed is the Kwikfit homebrand and in a What Car test braking from 70mph in the wet they stopped the car around 4 metres worse than the Continental Premium Contact 2.

In the dry it was something like 2 metres worse.

So yes, they were not quite as good as the best premium brand but not that far off.

Had Pirelli’s on my Mondeo then switched to the Arrowspeed -the latter were much better in all areas of use. In fact, I would go as far to say the Pirellis were awful, I swapped them out long before the minimum wear was reached.

Obviously if I had gone to Continental/Michelin then they would have been better. But if I had bought a Bugatti Veyron then it would have stopped and cornered better than the Mondeo as well.

You need to balance up your driving style with cost etc to make the call.

In my opinion the Arrowspeeds were close enough to the better brands to be worth saving a significant chunk of cash. IIRC they were less than £200 for 4.

    Glupton and Graham:

Am well aware of the policy but am also aware of a colleague who had C Diff last January, a car accident whilst at work in the summer, second period of sick due to hand pain (undiagnosed Scaphoid) due to the car crash, that was missed first time around, and has had unspecified D and V last month.

Now had their informal warning and another episode of sickness in the next 12 months will result in their first formal warning prior to dismissal.

Not sure they would come clean if the situation arose.

A work colleague has been hit by a car this morning. He was on the main road and she car pulled out at a give way and side swiped him out.

    He’s ok but shook up.

She insisted that it was his fault as she had seen him but he should have slowed to let her out.

Me and the wife are nurses so getting noro or c diff are, unfortunately, an occupational hazzard.

Reckon its gonna get really bad this year in hospitals as a tightening of sickness policy that can lead to dismissal, means that nurses I know are already on their second/third bout in the past 12 months, but dont want to have time off as this will initiate proceedings against them.

Need to add everything up, fees/total cost/attitude to risk etc.

I fixed for 5 years at 2.99% with no fees that will take me to the end of my mortgage.

Don’t think anyone is going to offer me a much better deal.

Cue 1% mortgages becoming the norm in the next few months.

Yes- rub it in your eyes before you rub it on your balls. Or perhaps more sensibly- rub it in someone else’s eyes.

    Or on someone elses balls.

Sorry, I’m being a bit thick – what does “brake testing me” mean?

What he’s saying is that you intentionally slammed on to teach the guy a lesson not to drive so close to you.

Point taken. But the general feeling on this bike forum seems predominantly anti – cyclist as it is only focusing on the glasses guy.

The Daily Mail could take numerous quotes from this thread alone to support and evidence their story.

Even cyclists seem to think it’s all the fault of the cyclists.

    Weird, huh?

Three bed semi here and our stat is in the hallway and set to 15 degrees. I don’t bother with the timer as our life’s don’t run to a schedule. It kicks in and out about three or four times a day for an hour or so whilst its frosty outside. We’ve old thin double glazing, 9″ solid walls with no cavity, and a little loft insulation but the arched ceilings mean that it’s impossible to insulate about 25% of the loft. 15 degrees in the hall gives us about 18/19 in the lounge. If my wife’s cold, she just pops the gas fire on for a while. Our gas usage averages out to about £35 a month.

    What am I doing wrong?

This is similar to me in every respect except my bill is double that.

Was more thinking about the rest of the video and how the taxi driver was driving but didn’t see it as a problem. He even said something along the lines of ‘ well I was a bit close bit I didn’t hit them’. It seemed like he thought that sort of gap was ok and I got the impression he probably passes that close quite regularly.

As regards the guy who was filming he did seem to be looking for bad driving but, then again, if people didn’t pull out on him and cut him up then he would have nothing to video.

I really don’t think the taxi driver did that much wrong

What about earlier in the clip where he passed another cyclist with around 12 inches to spare?

    About 22 years.

Broke my bike when I was about 8 and didn’t get on one again until I was 30 after a drunken comment that MTBing looked good.

Riding on the flat without falling off was hard for the first year.

I don’t think being racist is an exclusively white thing.

I’m struggling to understand what is wrong with using the word “black” to describe people with very dark skin.

Not a definitive answer but a few people I have spoken to from African countries wanted a distinction between them being pure blooded as opposed to ‘tainted’ Afro-caribbeans (that is tainted by mixing with whites).

I too have always referred to chinese food as a chinky without ever meaning to be racist or offend as I merely used it as a shortening of chinese – even if I was buying a readymeal from Asda.

As a result of this thread I will desist from calling my dinner a chinky as the word obviously causes offence to some.

Up here in Huddersfield we also call Indian meals a ‘mucky’. Got me thinking now, is this also a term of offence I have been using inappropriately? Anyone know? Is it used elsewhere? What does it mean?

I struggle with long sentences but….

“the African lad over there” or the Caribbean lad over there”

FFS get it right though. If you want to see really offended then call a Caribbean an African….or vice versa.

I use TPS which works well but some still call. First I explain I am on the TPS register – at this point many apologise and say goodbye. Some are more persistent so I politely tell them I am not interested, wish them a good day and hang up.

Abusing people who are most likely struggling to make a few quid to keep a roof over their families heads would make me rather a prick, don’t you think?

Crikey,I assume you’ve put a few miles in on winter tyres in order to decide whether there is a performance benefit, yeah?

    dangerousbeans

I had a Mondeo the year before last with Pirelli’s on and I had difficulty getting from Rastrick over to Ainley Top. Put winter tyres on for the first time that year and that journey, plus the others, was significantly easier.

You must just be a much better driver than me.

Is it really necessary? (Honest, not having a go question…)

    For me, yes.

I am a community nurse covering Kirklees (which is a biggish lump of land) and will be travelling all over it pretty much whatever weather comes.

My patients are extremely vulnerable and often function poorly without our teams support, hence I will do my utmost to get to them. This includes fitting winter tyres, carrying loads of winter gear and driving as close as possible before walking in.

I know it’s mainly conurbation but there are some difficult to get to places in winter – I can have visits in Holmfirth in the morning, Marsden at lunchtime and Denby Dale in the afternoon.

Even if we are not talking snow, I still feel I benefit from the added grip when it’s cold and horrible.

Also, I have recently bought a Transit and many of the commercial lads swear by winter tyres so it’s not just a STW thing.

I did this (113 to 118) on a square taper and there was enough adjustment in the front mech to make no difference at all.

Suppose it depends what variation you have to play with.

The government has made it very clear that you won’t pay a penny until your earnings are above a certain level so what have you got to lose?

Governments have made lots of promises in the past that get broken by later ones.

I was having a very relevant conversation with owner of a small bike shop in Edinburgh a wee while back when news broke that Evans were opening a branch in town. I asked if he was worried this might put him out of business. His reply was that it would actually be a benefit as the size of the potential market would increase and he would target and service customers in a way that Evans couldn’t.

Yeah, you never get a reach round in Evans.

    He’ll go, just not yet

I have no time for his kind, they’ve invested so much time and energy into hate and blaming others for everything they don’t like, they’re afraid to see things any other way now.

Well that’s the Tories for you. :D
