I’ve been hankering after a Husqvarna hatchet for a while now.
£20 seems like a bargain for the quality – they get excellent reviews.

Hmm. My renewal quote was higher than last year (~£350 this year) but everyone else was significantly more expensive for the same level of cover.

Spoke to them on the phone and they suggested increasing my excess from £zero to £100, which took the premium (for the same cover as last year) down to ~£250.

    Hope this helps someone!

We’ve got Plenty and there are some very lovely things in there.

The initial plan was to make a solid fuel stove for camping*, but it’s turned out too big and heavy for that.

There are a number of design flaws with mine as it stands, not least:
    1) How do you put a pan on top of it without choking of the exhaust?
    2) Despite weighting the bast with stones, it’s too unstable – with a pan of water on top I reckon a gust of wind would blow it over
    3) Not enough insulation; the outer skin still gets too hot to touch

Cynic – yours looks a lot more practic-al!
Good mo’ by the way. Mine isn’t as neat.

*read as: the other half is away for the weekend and I wanted to play with fire

    Insulation is vermiculite.
Supposedly best because it’s a good thermal insulator, which means more of the heat goes up and into whatever you’re trying to heat, rather than into the body of the stove.

If you were looking to heat a space with it you could use sand instead I think.

Gutted – I was literally half a second too slow on a medium Freeride frame. It disappeared between me logging into paypal and the final confirmation click.

Now, how different would a large Freeride or S1 be to a medium Sanderson Breath?

I’ve been looking at wellies recently too.
Really wanted some Grubs Stalkers – like Muck Boots but with a vibram sole. Couldn’t justify the cost though.

Didn’t want Hunters for reasons already discussed.

In the end I narrowed it down to:
    – Dickies Landmasters (~£50)
    – Dunlop Purofort+ (~£50) (both of these are PU, and if you go for the steel toecapped versions I believe that they are VAT exempt)
Nokian Trek Plus (~£70, lovely but expensive)
    Superlight Stream (£35)

In the end I went with the superlights because they were the cheapest, and because the sole looked like it would last the longest.
They seem OK but I’ve not had the chance to use them in anger yet…

I’m not sure all of them are bad, some of the adverts for the University of Lincoln are quite amusing…

    Thanks!
It’s the soles that have worn out on my Quests – flat and relatively thin sticky rubber doesn’t last that long off the bike, so I’m looking to avoid 5.10’s as they’ll only be worse in this respect.

Tony – thanks for the offer but I’m looking for something less bike-styled.

    Has no-one mentioned Zebralight yet?
Nicest head torches bar none in my opinion.

Quick review of a couple of models in the from the H51 range here:

I picked up a pair of Sony MDR-NC22’s when they were on offer for £20 in Tesco a year or so ago.
    They’re superb.
I use them at work when I’m trying to concentrate, the way they cut out the keyboard clatter and background noise is amazing.
I’ve used them on planes and trains too, probably one of the best £20 I’ve spent…

    Right videos not working so:

    quad rotor wankel

    Vulcan take off howl

    (plus a low flypast)

Possibly my favourite youtube video of all time

    and finally

Did we decide whether or not the XT were sufficiently different to the SLX to warrant the difference in price? If it’s just the free stroke adjustment I can probably live without it.

I think I prefer the look of the SLX’s and I can put the difference towards some discs.

If I were buying another set.
Which I most certainly am not.

Which I most certainly am not.

Dammit, saying it twice doesn’t make it sound any more believable…

    Mine arrived today.
I went for the silver ones.

They came with a mug and a couple of bags of sweets.
Amazing price and service, I’ll use them again!

    Now to fit them…

    Thanks all.
Short/ss chainring bolts used, no threadlock, and I used the proper tool – just not well enough, by the looks of it.

Having tightened them up and had a good old look on the commute this morning it seems that the chainline isn’t quite right – separate issue, but good to notice…

Perfect timing – bottom bracket died this morning :x
I’ve decided that I prefer the feel of SLX’s to Hope Mini’s so I’ll soon be back to Shimano brakes on both bikes…

    – thanks slackman :-)

Reviving an old thread, but I’ve just seen the new Bingo bar at On-one.
Looks like just the job and takes MTB levers to boot.

    In their own words:

A handlebar that can be flipped between 2 positions:
    1. Bull horn for long commuting miles
    2. Back sweep for polo to get the riding position further back, or a more sit up and beg position.

This bar runs MTB brake levers at 22.2mm. It’s ideal for V-brake and Disc cable bikes.

    Clamp size: 31.8mm
    Width: 42cms
Colours: Polished black, White or Hi polished silver

My 1.8 Honda Civic sport (~150bhp?) currently averages 42-ish mpg, but it improves somewhat if I’m pootling at 50-60mph. I’m reasonably happy with that!

The SO wants a diesel Audi A2 which I think is an excellent choice…

catflees – it is. Someone posted an amazing DIY cafe racer-style project and I’ve fancied a go at building something around one of those frames ever since. They’re lighter than an inbred too!

I’ve got schwalbe marathon plus on my commuter, they’re not light but they are tough essentially indestructable. And they’ve got reflective sidewalls, if that makes a difference…
They seem to be lasting well too.

To be fair, if it’s MOD land why the hell would you try riding there anyway?

I’m not yet so jaded that I need the added excitement of wondering whether I’ll get run over by a tank/shot in the face to keep my adrenaline levels up…
