Im late in on this one, but just built this 🙂

Thanks to STW users for the Frame and Wheels (and other odd bits over the years)

YEs I know that tensioner looks like a deore mech…! I am thinking that if 36:20 works for me, I can get the perfect tension with a 1/2 link and a tiny bit of dropout filing….

I threw a Mobile phone in the canal after my Wife said something on it I didnt like.

How we laughed in the Morning when we sobered up.

I put another one in a Vice at work. That one DID have it coming.

If the next man is me, then you may not like her at all? Just seems to shout and howl through every song. An that live cover of You've got the love was played so much by the BBC, I wanted to kill every time it came on in the car (which was every time for a while). Wail, wail, wail, SHOUT SHOUT (out of tune) REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT.

    not a fan

    Just finished this..uh excercise bike!
40something 13ish SS gearing, rigid forks (thanks STW) old bits/ bobs, Super tacky tyres(all I had!). Perfect for 5 miles each way to work..!

Well the frame is on it's way, and all i need is rims, spokes and Forks.

Im going for the Exotic carbons from Disco brakes (84 quid)which a leave a few quid left over for the wheels.

    The only decision now is

leave the 456 SS and put gears on the 29er or visa versa? My gut is telling me to SS the 29er and put gears on the 456..

LOL. I already have my first SS injury. It seems when you are over the bars, sweating and grunting up a small slope, you chest-butt the stem if you loose grip. If I still used SPDs it would have been even more comical, Im sure.

NB That is one serious beard, man

Look at the singleator and other down-tensioners on here on here

    http://www.mtbr.com/ssfaqcrx.aspx

looks like it can take out loads…

Put your tensioner to one side, thread your chain and mark where the join will be (I use the drive chainring) Split it and you will have a saggy chain. Stick something like a Superstar tensioner on (10 quid) and away you go?

Sold. I guess that without 6" forks to soften the blow, I might just learn to be more subtle on the trails…

    I love standish woods.

I start at the car park and stay at the top of 3 paths. Nearly straight away a track is denoted by a post that leads you off to the left and takes you all the way to the quarry pretty much. There is even some new stuff with a couple of berms (created by NT and Hartpury college I think). Along the trail look out for 4 ft high posts (some have pics of bikes on them) these tell you where to go

At the quarry there is a few bits to play around on and it is a starting point for a few bits, the main one being the "DH" which is great fun and reasonably fast.

Going the other way, there is a trail that starts near the whiteshill road which goes alongside the road down to edge which is fun too. When you get there it is a short hop to painswick/ cranham and off you go again.

    A Note on The quarry.

The "DH" starts on a very natural looking, but graveled path. This is a longbarrow and enthusiasts want us to stop destroying it. Please see this post

    http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/randwick-longbarrow-preservation-or-is-it-standish-or-haresfileld.

The preservers had put some vegetation in place, and a few big logs, but alas these have all been pulled away and bikes are riding over it again.

Sorry if this makes no sense..there is beer in the fridge

bad news – a few more details might help locals identify them?

Well the Caad road bike was bought Friday from a LBS so my mate hasn't got that intimate with it..:( I Know it is decked out in capagnolo and the wheels are quite trick Italian jobs. Ill find out the name. (Gianna?)

The orbit has 105 kit, San Marco saddle, Mavic wheels with 105 hubs. Frame is white. No real distinguishing features. Mate is most upset about this one. It was built by himself over 20 years ago to a high spec and he LOVED THIS BIKE. really feel sorry for him .

    Funking Barstads

I had a cheapo Carerra TDF for a bit. It was ace fun, and I could get quite a lick on with it. If I had the time to get out and really put some miles in, I would have kept it for sure. Trouble is time is at a premium and I prefer to spend the spare I had on the MTB.

I used the Road bike for the short commute to work mostly, but it was so easy, I was getting slower on my Mountain Bike if that makes any sense? Swapped it for a rough 456 in the end which I mash there and back in top gear to build the legs up for the SS.

Just yesterday, my mate bought a Caad 8 and I want it now…! And the TDF is on!!!!

When cooking using Dave's Insanity Sauce, wash your hands thoroughly before going for a wee.

my mate got Dave's insanity sauce in his eyes once..he was trying to dirty my pint and got caught. In his efforts to hide the bottle behind his back a fountain of the stuff went into his face. He had burning eyes for hours. I almost felt sorry for him.

To the OP. Wear goggles. I had a bit of swarf taken from my eye a few months ago . Not funny

I had the same thing on my old Meta. It was a proper SNAP that you could feel through the pedal. Never happened after getting a new frame. Either something in the rebuild fixed it or it was the cracked frame groaning. (got a new crank/ bb for rebuild

    (might have been the seatpost)

I was horrified a few weeks ago when I made the change to flats. (been doing this 3 years now and only ever clipped in)

like the op, my feet got bounced off all the time in the rough stuff and It felt like the bike is falling away from me on every lip.

After a few weeks, it is starting to make sense, but I have nowhere near the same level of confidence (and it wasnt that high before)

To clarify, where should my foot be?. I guess forward of the SPD position is the answer, but it feels just wrong

Found one Saturday; Clear as Day, All I had to do was turn 180 degrees from my normal route to find it…

(It was a good 'un apart from a bomb hole at the start that has a ditch just before it goes back up…you are flying at this point to get up the other side. Bottoming out agogo and a cry of nyuuurrrrrrggg! )

Interesting video. I wish I had that much time on my hands. I couldn't wait to get my bike built and start riding it – I didn't even photograph it.

Usually I have a "helper" when I build mine. This usually involves grabbing my tools and smacking various bits of my pride and joy with them 🙂

Had a Night ride (full of close incounters with Deer and Doggers ) and didnt get to bed until 2.00am. Up at 7.30 these days (Oddly it was always 6.00 until we turned the cot into a bed…)

I have a rare opportunity to do a Saturday Ride today but I feel knackered!

Well I am back after my first go.

Initial thoughts on the road outside my house; This is going to be silly. (spinning after a few strokes)

On the trail however, it immidiately made perfect sense. I can already see where i was stop/ starting before; basically I have been lazy on any hint of a gradient which means I was slower into the next bits. Now, to keep the RPM up, you cant do that. This much was ace fun and enjoyed it a lot

What I didnt enjoy was the first climb. It wasnt steep, or indeed long, but I found myself pushing the first bit. On the next bit, I attacked. I made it to the top (just). My heart was trying to jump out of my chest, my lungs were burning and I had to sit down for 5 minutes 🙂

Its almost enough to put me off.

    but im not beaten yet…

NB The Cheap superstar kit performed faultlessly. Quiet and no hint of a slip or dropped chain. For 20 quid I cant complain

Better to run the tensioner pushing up, as it engages more teeth and looks nicer.

the tensioner shaft would hit the chainstay, i think. There is a pin on it which falls against the flat of the hanger and the natural spring position leads you to this arrangement. I know what you mean though and to be fair, If I get on with it, a new slow dropout frame and some smaller sprockets may be in order 🙂

I envy all you guys who need 500sq miles of countryside to play in…As a south Westerner, there is lots to play in, much within riding distance and I havnt seen a fraction of it, yet…no time!

I was 18 and my Triumph Dolomite Broke down. As I was fiddling with the engine, a fine looking 20-something in a Pug 206 GTi asked if I wanted to come back to hers to use the phone and have a shower. I was terrified.
