I built up a scandal 29er. rigid and SS.

Its was ace – With weirwold tyres it rolled and rolled and the thing felt bloody fast and genuine fun.

So good it was, that I broke up parts of my 26″ full suss to buy Forks, gears, Maxxis Ardent tyres, stans wheels etc etc etc. And in doing so, completely spoilt it. It was never the same as the rough rigid SS and I didnt really like it too much after that.

I ended up in the ridiculous situation of converting my Meta to a 69er with 100m forks. It actually went well, but it had a really slack angle and was more than sluggish in the steering department.

I sold all the remaining 29er stuff to fund some forks and wheels. Back on the Meta now – heavier than before and with a lower spec

(I have built an ACE stw/ parts bin XC 26er though so its all good 🙂

Can I ask what was wrong with well set up ‘non-spoon’ v-brakes?
They don’t work with sti levers

isnt there something called a ‘travel agent’ or some such thing?

Now you have your angles correct (i found this the hard bit when I built mine) you can make a template to make a proper 4 hole mount . 2 for the caliper and 2 for the mudguard mounts on the frame

I did this and connected a tie- rod (threaded bar with some rod-ends ) to the V Brake mount. worked really well.

As TJ has pointed out, your devcon is just going to peel off in the end, surely?

Dan, yeah I think it’s the first bombhole starting at the top of the racetrack.

yea I know the one looks like a chasm to me, too. 🙂 If I happen to be up there and see a lone chap staring into the abyss, ill be sure to say hi

I am going to practice technique on that little jump at the bottom of teachers? its not as steep or high and the roll in is flat but like a baby one of the one you have there. rolling it is fine so you can play on it ok

I would ditch my FS for an DB Alpine if I could afford it.

    Why? Cos they look ACE!

    I am Gnar -10 whatever I ride 🙁

Have a look at the commencal owners club forums

Mine had cracks in the shock mount welds top/ bottom.

A lot of the larges went on the Seat tube (this was beefed up on the Meta for 2010 and I have read lots about cracking where the head tube joins the downtube

Mine has had the Shockmount welds ground out, filled and carried along across the tubes (not just down the sides)

hasnt come back and I am a fatty with a Van r coil stuck in it

What a great find! I like the chap who had clearly taco’d his wheel but only noticed after he had had a fight with the marker tape 🙂

..and the accident that started around 4.40 had a sense of inevitability about it.

I’m quite surprised by the almost unanimous lack of interest..

I am surprised at your surprise..Its not just this forum. At work, at home – everyone I know couldnt give a flying **** about the whole stupid affair

I have a Meta 5 which is a heavy build – (coil shock and AM2 forks) It is great, of course..

Recently, I upgraded the work bike which is now a Kona Caldera with Carbon forks. I am so impressed with how effortless it is off road, I have bought it some light 100mm Suspension forks off here! The Meta is ace, but mine is a Particular drag if you are doing a lot of miles.

Same story here. Tight linkages meant the mech would stick, especially from full extension. this was on an X9. nothing to do with cables etc as it would do this off the bike in the workshop. iirc tolerance issue with 2009 units?

Commitments all weekend (as usual) But I have managed to wriggle out of today’s pointless prior engagement thus giving me 5 hours (count ’em )freedom (count ’em again)

    And I am going..

    Now 🙂

I bought a new Juicy 3 bleed kit complete with fluid from the Bay for a tenner and it worked a treat (the Avid one is 40 quid! )

Might be worth a punt – clean yours up, change the fluid and see what happens.

NB I am pretty sure these Juicys come up on here from time to time. One chap sold a nearly new set for a crazy price (was it 30 quid with discs?)

Right: thats it, I am getting up there… I failed Friday to do a night ride, I failed yesterday and I failed this Morning.

I ride a Meta with a coil shock and 150mm forks. I get a lot of “wow you must do some DH ” comments. The answer is, of course, “NO”

I just like the look of it and it fits me well. Coil shock for my fatness and AM2s for their cheapness. I have had 456s, a rigid SS scandal 29er and an NRS. I liked them all.

What one chooses to ride is their business, surely?

SS changed the way I ride. I had a Scandal SS and rode a horrible SS work bike for ages . Got rid of both in the end but I select bigger gears now on my 2×9 and get up faster than I did. (I run 11/32 : 26/38 )

If I wasn’t dreadfully fat I would be even faster

Can you try a few bikes out and get a feel? Im sure stem, angles, even wheel weight makes a difference to a degree.

I rode my Mate’s Scott Spark and was impressed how responsive it was. ( I ride a slack 5.5 incher with a 60mm stem – his was a 90 at least)

I think I would still be faster on mine though – leg out, slidy slidy, look up etc etc.

If it is a disc wheel and the rim isnt creased etc, I would buy a spoke spanner and have a go yourself. It really isnt that hard. You need patience.

I did my first one with

Wrong. It means someone who has been taught the right way to work on their bike.

Most people who are not committed into turning their bike into an expensive BSO pay attention to details..

I like Marzocci forks – mine have been faff free. My 150mm AM2 have also been slammed into a tree (while on the back of my car) and survived. I have stuck some Motorcycle fork oil in mine and (after getting the oil level correct) have been ace. Only cost 70 quid

Best performing forks I have had? Fox F140 (air)I think. But – lots of servicing and worry about the stantions wearing and quite flexy. Didnt matter in the end – the steerer came loose in the crown. I wouldnt buy S/H foxes….

I had drakes – they are half and half. Really smooth but a little top out when pulling on the bars pedaling.

Ruined the bike, of course – I preferred it with rigid carbons. 😉

ooh. I quite fancy this for our annual trip “somewhere” (where our wives set us free for one weekend a year)

what is the beer/ bike ratio? Should I bring 6 inches or 0 inches ? Is it -er – any good??
