Might be air in the ABS? There is a ECU driven bleed procedure (laptop job) for this in some cases I have heard – athough…

Get on some gravel and get the ABS going nuts for a while?
Sure my Mate sorted his Passat like this

I used one of those rubber jobs from DX – One half velcros to your hat and the other to your Camera – might be worth a go before you buy new. ~(mine was a 2K )

    Oh, poo.

    Now I’M doing it!

Got an old kona blast frame .which is now cooking in stripper…I figure I only need a few bits to build a awesome single- braked single speed pub bike..

Ok crankset, front wheel, grips, seat and seatpost required, but you get the idea

Bought a new bike. Washed with Lp water, licked clean, lubed and loved after every ride. Bike looked glorious before every ride. mmmmm nice

After 6 months all the bearings were goosed. Overhauled and gave up cleaning after that

It gets bounced on the floor a few times and chucked in the shed now.

*might give the chain and jockeys clean and lube once in a while

+1 for read the manual. My passat is mineral only for example (green stuff I think)

or maybe its the opposite,. there are different types though

My Sis-in-law’s Focus made a lot of whirring noises very shortly before emptying all its Power steering fluid on my Block paving – bearing on the Power steering pump failed

When I got on a bike after 20 years at 115kG, i bought a thing called a Land Rover Corazon to get me 5 miles to work. The thing pretty much fell apart after a few months (including the forks bending FORWARDS over time until they failed) This cost 200 quid – I just bought the pretty one in the LBS. This was 3 years ago and I was just starting out. (have had far too many bikes and bits since 🙂 )

My mate rides an old Mountain bike with 1.5 tyres and cut-down-upside-down drop bars complete with Panniers but crucially good kit/ wheels and he does loads of miles on it.

For work only, I ride a simple 2×8 mountain bike with Carbon forks and mary bars which built up really cheaply for what it was (classifieds and parts bin build)

I have been on flats since last Summer. (I blamed a hefty gouge in the leg on SPDs due to still being stuck to the bike in a hapless OTB incident as well as many topples etc etc)

I have read with interest the foot position comments so I have been riding with the foot much more central (practicing on the way to work too) What I have found is that dropping your heel has a MUCH greater effect when your foot is here and you can really fell the bike “pushing back”

This is important for me as the biggest difference I found between the 2 was going over terrain where the ground falls away – like into bombholes etc

My Son was bought a Strider Prebike for his second birthday. I chose this because my sone has particularly short legs and this was one of the only ones that went so low (11 inches)

There arent many balance bikes that go that low let alone pedal bikes.
By 2 1/2 he was lifting his legs and freewheeling down slopes.

Agree totally with Daniel. Brilliant idea and a good head start

A measure of my fitness last year was bonking after the first lap and wondering if I should do the second… 😯

I did the second anyway, lost my phone and generally felt miserable! That said, there is a lot of ace stuff to ride on and I will go back!

This year, will go off more sedately, run 2×9 instead of 1×9 and not drink lots and lots of lager the night before.

My mate rides an old Raleigh M Trax with Vee brakes and cheapo Mz Comp Forks

He has a blast on it and is hard to keep up with unless it is really bumpy or techy . It first came out when his Epic got nicked just before we were all about to go on a trip to Afan.

The Epic got replaced with a Scott Spark. This also got nicked very soon after despite locks and various alarms.

In all cases, the scrotes left the Raleigh. he is so attatched to it now, that I doubt he will replace it!

+1 for shin pads. They are bit uncomfortable at first but you get used to it.

More of a confidence thing for me but I am sure I have saved myself a number of unwanted tags

Aw I loved my NRS. It was just a bit small for me…When the frame arrived in the post, I was surprised how light it was

How do you get on with the shock setup? I fitted an RP2 in the end and set it for 20% sag which I know isnt the correct way to go about it. Worked quite well but you had to flick the lever a lot.

    I like it!

I am a compulsive seatpost twiddler, so I am deffo desiring a 27.2 dropper. (but funds shouldnt really allow it). One on ebay right now. Not sure how high it will go?

It never has happened on any of my other bikes BTW. I blamed it on me being a 100kg+ lard arse stomping on the pedals and twisting that long swingarm…Even with locktight and locking the locknuts super tight to each other, you wouldnt believe it.

    Dancake

My First Meta Did this. Flexy swingarms act like a big spanner. It was either the locknuts or the qr coming loose. Bought a Dual-cam QR and locktighted the Locknuts which made it last a lot longer

Changed the hub to a 12mm bolt thru in the end. Sorry thats no help at all

A few years ago a fancied a single pivot bike.

Couldnt afford an orange 5 so chose a Commencal Meta.

After 6 months all the bearings were shot and the frame cracked. Sold the Warranty replacement and moved on . Should I have saved for the 5?

*(for the record, bought another meta frame since. Had it welded, fitted heavy coil shock and some tough bombers – completely different to my original meta and actually ACE )

Got a drinks carton (Macdonalds Large) chucked at us the other day. Luckily my riding partner shielded me from most of the contents.

I was as annoyed by the littering as I was by the Coke shower

Just got back after a stolen 2.5 hours in Standish woods, Glos. (Bike on the car and play about session)

True to form I felt faster, my head was well up and I was more confident.

right at the start, the roots were a bit wet but they soon dried.

Even did a log drop-off that I havn’t done for 6 months (don’t get too excited – its not that big) Nothing to do with the surface that one, but confidence is catching

    Dancake

    ’tis true.

I deffo attack more in the wet and I could convince myself I am actually faster. Different style I suppose. Its easy for me to over-brake when there is loads of grip and end up going around corners in hexagon fashion rather than a smooth drift! -( also a perceived softer landing. )

Psychology is a massive part of my riding – hopefully something Jedi can sort out later in the year)

If its OTB due to jumping incompetence then I KNOW I wont dare to lift over anything for the next 6 months. Thats what does my head in and is exactly what happened 6 months ago (bent my bars on that one too) and I have been terrified of lips and drops since 🙁

Conversely, I smacked a lamppost with my bar on the way home from work the other day sending my flying through the air in spectactular fashion. I dusted myself down and didnt give it a second thought

I got 3 of these a while back when they were doing 3 for 2 but I think it has finished now

Lack of braking reliability and power at the rear. Advise an insane and ill-advised rear disc convesion.

with what would you replace it?

I fancy one myself to replace my Meta. Does anyone have any experience with the magic link?

Dan, which trail is teachers? And where abouts?

I always stumble on this one. I guess using the wall entrance as a waypoint, turn into the wood opposite and look for something obvious.

You quickly end up in a nice trail that threads through some low vegetation in a bit of a clearing? (havnt done it for a while)

It is quite long and good fun, and as I say there is a little jump at the bottom. You end up having to climb back up a road/ track that is near the forbidden land, I think…

*Might have sent you completely the long way. Hope that helps
