dan, I fully understand its not just a matter of more speed = more performance, I also like to keep up to date on PC tech.

Howeveer running 8Gb over 4Gb will give you nothing when surfing, watching movies, and gaming as he says is what he uses it for.

Running fast DDR3 at tight timings will give you far more benifit than simply dropping huge amounts of RAM in the rig.

The difference between 1066 and 1333 memory speeds equates to approximately 2-3 frames per second increase on games.

Regardless of the actual facts about speed, judging by the price point of the two memory specs provided, it makes sense to get the faster memory.

If the OP had decided that he wanted 4Gb but didn't know the speed he wanted and was wondering between 1066 or 1333 then there'd be an argument to be had. as the 4Gb 1066 comes in at £20 cheaper. Then the question should be asked, is £10 a frame extra worth it?

I never said you can't use 2Gb, what I was trying to say is that more than 2Gb is, for want of a better phrase, a luxury, and most systems will run adequately on 2Gb, regardless of what you do on them.

More memory will make running memory hungry applications a better experience, and will enable the running of more applications at once.

For the same memory size, extra speed will only be noticeable on synthetic benchmarks, and certain memory hungry applications that are "timeable" like winzip, 3d rendering tools etc. In real world internet and word usage, the extra speed wont be noticed.

Why get more then 2Gb then? I can use Matlab running simulations that can take days to run, building and then diagonalizing huge matricies, on 2Gb.

Quickly looking at microdirect (normally pretty cheap)
    If 8Gb of DDR2 costs (4x2Gb) £140
    4Gb of DDR3 costs (2x2Gb) £80

Then cost wise it's a no brainer, and I'd go with the 4Gb.

Given the choice though , at the same price, I'd always go for memory over speed.

    Get the 8Gb
Your 64bit system will be able to use it all without problems.

The speed difference between 1066 and 1333 is very small, and wont make much a difference in the real world.

See this article for a comparison. Toms hardware

It's probably the same as your outgoing (POP3) server address.

Merlin Malt 2 or Spec rockhopper SL comp would be my suggestion.

Sorry, it wasn't really a question about my bike being twitchy as such, I was just asking if there were any rules about how to change the handling.

The only thing I can think that is wrong with my bike (spesh rockhopper comp 09) is that it feels a bit "light" at the front, so I'm thinking of lowering the handlebars to put more weight at the front. It just got me wondering if there were other ways of fiddling with the handling.

Unless you've been very unlucky and managed to get hold of a duff batch of fabric each time, the membranes shouldn't leak unless you puncture them, or the seams fail.

If you don't keep them clean*, and the outer DWR finish topped up, you can stop them breathing, and then you'll get wet, but it's your own sweat that's building up, unable to escape, and not water getting in from outside.

Event is more prone to this because of the way the membrane is constructed.

Paramo isn't technically waterproof, and it's possible to get wet if you apply to much pressure to the fabric (like kneeling in a puddle) also Paramo needs more looking after than Gore or Event, so if you've not looked after your membrane waterproofs to the point of apparent failure, I'd suggest not getting a paramo as it'll "fail" even quicker.

If you're wanting a membrane based jacket again, have a look at the Marmot jackets made with their "membrane strata" material, it's supposed to be as breathable as Event.

    Edited to add:
    * by clean I mean washed in pure soap or "Techwash" as detergent and fabric softeners will bugger up the DWR and breath-ability of the membrane until they are washed off.

Well to be honest theres no way anyone would every take the tiny percentage out of the air , all the stuff in the UK comes from LPG fields in the US.

Not strictly true. About 85% of the helium produced comes from the US but most of the UK stuff comes from Poland, Russia and Algeria. BOC have recently opened up a new plants in Australia and Qatar too.

The above is correct, and if you employer did try to pull a fast one, send them an intemised bill for all the hours of labour it's taken to keep it in that condition. After all if it was truly being hired then the maintenance would be their responsibility surely?

I'm pretty sure the t&cs with mine state that I'm responsible for all maintenance and subsequent costs.

Where have you seen them in the UK? Probably being slow but I Can only find the NZ site and at £8 a pair and £9 p&p they seem a tad 'spensive compared to the £9 for two pairs inc p&p from alpkit

Also, can you use the scheme for "repairs"? Say when my current loan expires, can I get a replacement fork on my bike? and drive train bits rather than a whole new bike?

It looks like it uses the OSs online mapping API, so does that mean it doesn't store map tiles?

Just thinking that as an app its great if your within signal range, but a bit "not very great" if you happen not to have signal

Assuming this is linked to your thread about wanting to take pictures of immiscible liquids, Mercury is a really bad idea health wise and almost certainly unsuitable for what you want.

It's very dense, so will sink to the bottom and just puddle at the bottom of the container.

As a bit of a novice, and generally not very good, (and being biased because I live here) stuff around New Mills is good and not to hard. Chinly Churn, around the shooters lodge above Hayfield, or Lantern Pike or out towards Rowath or Marple is pretty fun.

Tried cheaper options on the request of my Girlfriend. Even she agrees that paying a bit more is worth the extra now.

For starters a quick google comes up with £89.99 as the cheapest for a pair of Patagonia Guide pants so that's £40 you could save straight off.

I wonder how much of your *knowledge* of what kit is good, and lasts is affected by snobbery and needing a label like Patagonia?

I have bits of patagonia kit and its no more special than Marmot, Mammut, Paramo, Mountain equipment, Rab or Montane (I have bits of kit from all the above) but it does carry a premium price.

I'll accept that brands like Craghoppers and now sadly Karrimor don't produce kit that is long lasting and well designed, but there are cheaper "mainstream" brands than Patagonia that will do the same, if not better job, but perhaps with a slightly less trendy label.

Cranberry, you don't state the spec of your laptop that was struggling with Windows 7. I'd be interested in finding out.

My experience of Win 7 running on a virtual machine running on an Intel D 3Ghz with 3Gig of RAM (So effectively running two operating systems at once, each with 1/2 the spec) is that it's significantly faster than Vista, and about the same, if not a little quicker than XP (all fresh installs) It's entirely subjective though, as I never actually bench marked them.

Also your experience goes against the benchmarks I've read online (see here for example http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=3187)

    Yep.

File handling seems to be much quicker. It doesn't stick at 20 seconds remaining for about half an hour any more when copying or moving files about.

If someone can tell me the g-factors (gx, gy, gz) and hyperfine coupling constants (Ax, Ay, Az) in MHz for a non-exchanging but quadrupole coupled (i.e. S=1/2 + 1/2 = 2×1/2 and not 1, J=0) Cu(acac)2 in 10% toluene in DCM then I'd really appreciate it. Been working on the simulation for 6 months and still no joy.

Also, if it's not to cheeky, could I get the same numbers for the analogous Cu(HFac)2 dimer please? 🙂 That'd tick my Mphil and I can go out and ride my bike

I run Windows 7 on a VM here, and haven't had any problems. It runs faster than Vista on comparable hardware. It's the best version of Windows I've used. I would recommend it above Linux too.

Only pain in the a*se is that you can't seem to "upgrade" a previous version of windows to 7. You have to do a fresh, clean install wiping everything. Not sure if I've just not found the right option, but I read something about this was due to microsoft not being able to include a pre-installed version of IE in the build.

    Re: Pac codes

The robbing bar stewards wouldn't give me one (ooh err….) without charging me another months line rental. They wouldn't tell me why this was the case, and no amount of complaining, or speaking to a supervisor was getting them to change their mind. Overall they were argumentative and a real pain to deal with in the end to get canceled, but I am now experiencing happy joy feelings with T-mobile who have so far been wonderful compared to the evils of Orange. I guess it's the luck of the draw as to who you get to speak to, and how cooperative they feel.

A change in my number is a small price to pay for better service and happy feelings. I'm going to miss the reminders for Mr Plangs dental appointments 🙂

I rang up last night and and spoke to possibly the rudest phone operator I've ever had the misfortune to ring.

She said, categorically that I was not eligible to cancel my contract as I had not had the text message, but gave no reason as to why I was ineligible. After a circular argument for about 5 minutes I asked to speak to a supervisor. I was put on hold for an absolute age(probably almost half an hour) eventually the supervisor told me that the person I'd just spoken to had "an old version of the customer database", and was wrong, and I could cancel my contract. Annoyingly she was only prepared to do it there and then, and not give me 5 days to sort out a new phone.

    dan1980

I've been with them since 98 when I got my first phone when I went to uni. I'd built up years of extra deals (10% of for so many years, 15% off for another so many years ect. I'd upgraded my phone in January due to a buggering my old one, and added a 500Mb internet bundle as I was using mobile internet a lot at the time. The bar stewards removed all my discounts upping my bill from £10 a month to over £50.

When I rang up and asked what was going on the person on the other end of the phone basically said that as I'd taken out this 500mb bundle, they'd had to re-do my contract on their system and had "accidentally" removed my discounts, and now they were gone, there was no way of getting them back. As compensation they said they'd change my renewed contract from 18 months to 12. Strangely on their website, it still says I'm on an 18 month contract.

I tried last night to get through but after 30 minutes on hold got bored.

    dan1980
    Free Member

Because the phone isn't part of the contract. Hence when you loose it, they can still charge you line rental etc.

The bit in the contract that covers it is:
“14.1 your Device is not a part of your Contract – your Device and Accessories are acquired by you outside the terms of your Contract.”

Going to try this today as I've had nothing but problems with Orange.

Putting in new “colder” tap water could thermally shock your fish, you should try to add dechlorinated water at the same temperature as the tank.

It’s worth noting (not sure if it’s applicable here) but most internet browsers don’t support imbedded colour profiles, so what you see in lightroom (which supports imbedded colour profiles) isn’t what you’ll see in an application that doesn’t.

If you look at this picture, its a screen grab of lightroom, and a Firefox window of the same picture. You can see that the colours are really quite different.

You can enable it in firefox, but I can’t remember how you do it, a google should sort it out for you.
