I guess sacrifices have to be made somewhere, and going off RRP for shifters (£75 vs £155) there’s a reasonable saving to be had for a bit of kit people probably aren’t that bothered about.

Once you remove the cost of the frame, forks, brakes and wheels (the bits people do pay attention to) the amount left for the drivetrain ect probably isn’t that much.

Cheers, looks like I’m off the lbs tomorrow then.

Thread on bb looks ok, and the thread inside the bb looks ok, but neither cup will turn more than 1/2, guess I’ve got a dodgy thread on the frame.

People need to accept that Gore/event, and pretty much every membrane waterproof is 100% waterproof, and will be until they delaminate, or you stick a hole through it.

The first problem with any jacket is that they come with holes, one where the neck is, two for the arms, and one for the waist. These will allow water in, so you get wet

The second problem is that we are generally sweaty little primates, and there is no 100% waterproof material that can breath well enough to handle the amount of perspiration we generate after a couple of hours. So you get wet. It’s not the jackets fault, it simply physics.

Hmm just tried buying a pair of Revelations and it took the money off on the first page, but when I got to the credit card bit it put the price back upto the original price again

Tried removing the voucher code and re adding it, now it says I have used the voucher. Oh well I will wait for a deal somewhere else !!!

When I did it, it originally said there was £0 discount, but on the payment recpiet emailed to me, they have taken off the 10%

newer windows releases are notably slower (yes…including 7…)

whereas ubuntu will feel way more responsive on low-spec hardware

This isn’t true. Windows 7 has better support for multi-threading applications, so these typically run faster on Win 7 than XP. Applications that do not support multi-threading generally run about the same speed, if there is a difference, it is marginal. In general terms, there is no significant difference on the overall performance (synthetic and real life benchmarks) between the two. The major issue with Win 7 over XP in that the battery life will be compromised slightly.

Regarding linux, although generally hard disk access is quicker, due to differences in the file system etc, synthetic benchmarks suggest that windows 7 for x86 outperforms unbuntu. (obvious caveat being that synthetic benchmarks don’t always translate into real world performance)

If your waterproof jacket is a laminate (gore/event etc) and is genuinely leaking, then it’s time to say goodbye to it as the membrane has degraded to some extent and no amount of spray or wash-in will fix the problem.

If on the other hand, you have been wearing your jacket in warmish, humid conditions, the chances are you got wet from a mixture of stuff coming in through the holes (neck/wrist) and your own juices from perspiration. Reproofing with a spray or wash-in (more accurately – replacing the water repellent finish) will help water bead off the jacket and should help with the apparent breathability of the jacket (i.e. more of your sweat gets out)

I use grangers wash-in on my goretex jacket and trouser and found it lasted longer than Nikwax. The new stuff doesn’t need heat treating either, which is handy. I use the spray on stuff on my paramo too and haven’t found any problems.

    I think it’s sorted!

They use home delivery whos nearest depot is 40 miles away, and from a failed Amazon order, they only redeliver to the same address. I don’t trust them to sort out a delivery to a house I’m not at, hence trying to get it sorted some other way.

I got a nice email from the bods of JE James with a solution, have done the transaction, and it appeared to go through OK. Still waiting for an email confirmation, but my work email has been very slow recently!

So fingers crossed, some bargin Revelations for “Gertie” my new mmmbop build should be winging there way to me soon

I think they were, but sold as “Titanium”, even though they weren’t. Gave them an excuse to up the price. TiN coatings make stuff more resistant to wear (and generally give them a nice gold appearance!)

Pure Ti has about half the specific heat capacity of Al, so the rotors would get hotter quicker. (i.e. requires half the energy input to raise the material by 1 degree C)

I recall seeing rotors labelled as titanium, but they just had a thin coating of Ti on them, rather than being entirely made of the stuff.

Whilst we’re on the subject of rodents, what would our cat have killed in our garden that looks like a small mouse but has a furry tail?

    Gerbil?

    Degu?

Possibly a bit big (about fist sized + tail) and the tail is more scaly, with a “paint brush” at the end

They’re filming Captain America in Manchester too, apparently the area behind picadilly station towards the canal was suitable for filming a 3 minute car chase scene.

If you use a program like advanced task killer, it'll "kill" the music app (and seems to do so at random intervals rather than the pre-set time.) If you exclude it in the options, it sorts itself out.

    Failing that, use Meridian.

superstar componants grips seem fine to me, and I have reasonably small hands.

I had some fireeye ones before, the rubber lasted about a year of not massively regular riding and again, were suitable for small hands.

I'm surprised no-one's suggested owning him with bombers yet 🙂

Cheers for the advice. I'm sat here not massively looking forward to leaving work in case he's going with his guitar again. Fingers crossed that as it was a new toy, he felt the need to play it loud yesterday, and the novelty will have worn off.

Generally if I'm going to "sit back" at a junction, I'll do it in the cycle lane, out of the way of other traffic.

I'm not subservient to other traffic, however, they are in a large metal box, powered by an internal combustion engine, I'm on some glorified scaffolding powered by Fray Bentos and ginsters. In the (unlikely) event of my bike and their car trying to occupy the same point in the space-time continuum I have a strong feeling that I wouldn't win. Hence I ride in a manner that is likely to reduce the potential for some space-time-coexistence related issues.

Unsurprisingly this is turning into a pointless discussion! You said you let all the traffic past. For all the reasons stated clearly above this is a bad idea – it is safer to get a little ahead and let each car come by in turn, when it is safe for them to do so. The cyclist decides if it is safe, not the driver.

    Eh?

If you sit back and wait for all the motorists to get past, you as a cyclist can then choose when it's safe to enter the flow of traffic. Junctions are dodgy places because arses on bikes jump lights or don't signal, and arses in cars jump lights and don't signal. At certain junctions I'm quite happy to wait for the chaos to clear before joining the flow of traffic, other times I sprint off at the lights to get ahead. It depends on the makeup of the junction.

I do it to get up to speed so that I can get past the arseholes that have already cycled through the red lights, causing traffic chaos behind them (which they're usually oblivious to) and then inexplicably dawdle.

If you're in that much of a sodding hurry to jump red lights, ****ing cycle at a rate where you're not going to hold me up! 👿

    And breathe….

The office does have a land line, but the lab I tend to work in doesn't so there didn't seem a lot of point in giving the estate agent the number.

I think the point about being a bit ambiguous is probably valid, so will have a polite conversation on Monday with him and express my displeasure at him randomly turning up. Like someone said, even leaving an answerphone message for me to collect later would be better than making no effort at all.

If he'd done it during the week, I probably wouldn't have as much of a problem as I would be at work (as far as he knew) but I could have potentially been in on a weekend, and that could have caused an awkward situation if he'd just turned up without letting me know.

I have been leaving the house spotless, but after another argument with the ex, I was in a foul mood, and needed to go out and do something, and as I hadn't heard anything from the agent decided that leaving the place in a mess wasn't going to be a big issue.

Due to atomic motion, and bits of quantum theory I don't fully understand, it is currently impossible to know exactly how long a piece of string actually is.

There was an interesting (if you like that kind of thing) explanation on Horizon a few months back.
