I don’t know whether they’re still in business but I once purchased some ‘daylight’ spectrum fluorescent tubes from a company called Full Spectrum Lighting. Strikes me that it might work out cheaper to buy a few of those and fit in a standard fluorescent ballast than splashing out for a SAD light. Might be wrong though as they were more than double the price of standard tubes.

I don’t think the luminosity of daylight spectrum bulbs/tubes is enough to be of therapeutic value for SAD. (300-500 vs 10,000 lux)

I’d be interested to hear about your research to GlitterGary, I’ve read a few papers on the subject, and their research methods seem fairly OK to me (generally small sample sizes though) and they seem to come to the conclusion that light therapy has beneficial effects over what you’d expect from a placebo….

Have a look at this, decide which OS does best in the things you’re likely to be doing the most, and choose the appropriate phone….

I’ve stuck with android since it came out, and currently have a Galaxy S2. I’ve tried friends iphones, and just don’t get on with them. Personal preference and all that…

I like to re-arrange the spice jars in tesco that have the big letters on the front to make rude words on the shelf.

AMAZING, I want to go shopping now just to do this

On a similar note, I can’t go past a shop display of action figures or soft toys without rearranging them in compromise positions…

Also, egg/kitchen timers all have to be set to 5 minutes after I plan to leave the shop, and any “press to try me” noise making toys all have to be pressed before I can leave….

If it’s just to keep you warm if you get stuck in a car, why not just get a cheap duvet from Tesco?

I’d try deleting your browser cache and cookies following these instructions, then see what happens.

Might be worth a re-install of chrome if the above doesn’t help.

Edit – i forgot it’s triple channel. Bloody Intel… Try this. Bit more expensive, but nothing drastic.

The motherboard the OP has selected only supports DDR3 in duel channel mode, so your original link is fine..

I’m guessing by your chosen graphics card, you’re not building a PC for gaming?

For a similar speed to the intel spec you’ve given, you can get an AMD Phenom xII 955 and an asus M5A97 motherboard for less cash, and pretty much the same speed.

If you are after playing modern games, I’d consider matching your processor with a graphics card along the lines of an ATI 6850 for around £130

4GB of RAM should be good enough for most things. 2x2GB sticks, and corsair are a reasonable brand. If you think you want more memory, you’ll have to be running a 64Bit operating system to make use of it.

I’ve been toying with the idea of a Giant contact switch, but was told they’d come back in stock in 6-8 weeks 😕

    Bored too.

Busted up my ankle, so not been out on my bike for over 3 weeks now so apart from hobble into work and home, I’ve done sod all recently. This evening, just to mock my lack of being able to do something useful my internet connection isn’t fast enoughto play battlefield 3 online. So I am officially bored.

I might have crack open the beers at this rate and watch whatever passes for entertainment on the TV. 🙁

Just make sure you don’t apply to much heat. Thankfully it was old, but I ruined a goretex jacket by accidentally using a hot tumble dryer, and the seam tape shrunk.

    Apparently fixed now….

Because of the way that Event works you need to clean the jacket in a “normal” detergent first, then re-wash with pure soap (or techwash) before applying a waterproofing agent (spray on ones seem to work best for me anyway) and then apply heat (cool tumble dryer, iron over a tea towl, hair dryer etc.)

Should be almost as good as new once you’ve done that.

If that disc thing is so cold, how come he’s able to touch it without getting burnt?

Assuming it’s cooled with liquid nitrogen (which boils at 77K), it’ll be considerably warmer due to the surrounding air. The frost and vapour coming off it will be a mixture of liquefied air reboiling and water freezing/condensing on or near the surface.

I regularly handle stuff that’s been sat in a bucket of liquid N2 for a while, and so long as you don’t grip it for prolonged time periods, you won’t get a cryogenic burn.

I’ve just changed my duel fuel from British <insert rude word of choice> gas (BG)to Scottish Power as according to USwitch they’ll be a lot cheaper (time will tell on that one)

It’s been a royal pain in the backside. BG initially refused to let me leaving saying I had an outstanding debt. That debt was the £6 final bill they sent me, which I’d paid as soon as I received it, but in the 3 days it took to get from their end to my door, they’d rejected Scottish power request to move me. They said that the £6 was below their debt threshold, and there wasn’t actually a good reason for the cancellation.

I had to start the process again, and 4 weeks later BG asked for my final meter reading (again) but I was on holiday, so they closed my account on an estimated reading, sending me a final bill that was a lot higher than it should be. Scottish Power have now taken over my billing, but they can’t do anything about the initial reading as it was given to them by BG, and BG won’t do anything as I’m no longer a customer.

Additionally, because of the delay, Scottish power claimed that they couldn’t switch me onto the deal from the uSwitch website, but having given me the price for the unites used, it seems they are a bit cheaper than BG, so hopefully my bills will drop.

    This +1

I’m only 30ish and my body is giving up on me.

That and people who are bothered about how they look, or how others look when they’re riding. Get a grip, riding a bike is supposed to be fun, and who cares if the bloke/lass in front/behind looks like a lycra condom or a stormtrooper. Life’s to short to get het up about it.

I’d go for the HD version.

Games can benefit from running from a hard disk, they should load quicker, and in some cases, you’ll get a better visual experience (e.g. Battlefield 3 – not suitable for 8 year olds though!), and I’d imagine the number of games utilising this technology will increase due to the size and speed limitations of DVDs

I was sad enough to stay up for the midnight launch. I had a 50 minute delay to get activated after pre-loading it from Origin. Not massively impressed.

My x4 955, ati 9850, seemed to cope with the high graphics setting no problem, and the bit of single player I played seemed good, although so far it seems to be a series of set peices and quick time events

I doubt I’m particularly well endowed in the gentleman vegetable department, but I found DHB stuff to be particularly tight around the general crotchal area. It must be my manly thighs…. 🙄

Decathlon stuff is pretty good, if you don’t get the bottom of the range stuff, the next level up (with blue and white pads) are pretty good for the money.

It’s something to try at least 🙂

I’ve not been over my bars since making the change about a year ago, now I either make a tactical dismount to the side, or drop off the back!

Rotate your brakes so they’re more parallel to the ground (when on the flat), it causes you to drop your wrists and you’ll shift your weight back a bit further as a result. This means you’re less likely to go over the bars.

It is probably to little air in the forks too 🙂

    An update!

I hadn’t heard anything from them so launched a paypal dispute. I finally got my money back this morning from Paypal, and as part of the refund, got a cheery note from Biketechs saying:

“Hi Dan here is a full refund sorry for the inconvenience.”

I’m not sure them trying to steal £85 of me, and withholding a refund as something best described as an “inconvenience” but there you go. I’m not massively happy it’s taken so long, but at least I’m not out of pocket any more.

Well, the actual panels are made by the same manufacturers (LG, Samsung, etc) just badged up/put in different enclosures according to braynd. A bit of research will reveal that X model by X brand uses the same as Y model by Y braaynd.

Hannspree make their own screens, they got fined last year for being involved in a price fixing racket with LG, & Samsung.

The advantage of buying a “premium” (i.e. Sony/LG/Samsung) brand LCD telly is that you stand a better chance of getting a decent picture. You do pay a price for the name, but usually you get a better telly too.

Things to look out for are ghosting in fast moving scenes, which can be annoying (especially playing games on PS3 or watching sports), blacks not being very black (washed out grey), and scaled images from standard definition signals like DVDs or freeview/freesat/virgin looking blurry, jaggy or oddly pixalated.

Everyones eyes are different, and I’d suggest going to somewhere like Richer sounds, or curries, and having a look at the pictures on the screen.

    Whats wrong with Deore?

In general absolutely nothing, the drive chain on my hard tail is deore, apart from the shifters, which are SLX.

The difference in shifting performance between deore and SLX is very noticeable. I’ve never been sure whether the SLX -> XT upgrade is worth it, but certainly the deore -> SLX shifter upgrade is well worth the cash. As has been said, you can also take off the window on SLX and above, which can be handy in some situations (like running Formula Oro brakes)

If you have a valid key (for your full student copy) then you can do a full, clean install using upgrade media.

There’s instructions on the internet on how to do this, it requires a little registry hack, but it’s very simple to do.

    Edited to add:
I bought the student download version when it launched, and I can still download the files via the link they sent me in the email. That might be worth a shot too.

On my 2 bikes, I’ve got one set of Flow, and one set of Bontegra Ranger rims. I’m using bog standard 2.25 advantage tyres on both bikes.

Not had any problems with the flows at all (apart from initial inflating issues which I solved with use of CO2. I can’t for the life of me get the rangers to even start to stay up. I’ve used stans tape for the rim, do I need to use a rim strip as well to keep the tyres up?

When I got mine, I opened up the bearings to add more grease and found they were quite dry to start with.

With that, the bearings lasted for about a year regularly riding in the Peak and being somewhat lacking in the cleaning department. When they went, I changed to them for some Stainless bearings with a rubber seal from AK Bearings (Part: 61805-2RS ) and they’re still going strong, (only 6 months old though)

I don’t understand why people find bleeding avid/formula brakes a PITA.

I guess the manuals are a bit complicated, but if you think about what you’re trying to do, it’s not hard. There’s no need to completely remove the brakes from the bike either.

Take the wheel off and the pads out, and stick something in the calliper to stop the pistons moving.[/*]

Put 10ml of fluid in one syringe, and 5ml in the other. Clamp them closed then pull on the plunger to remove some air from the solution.[/*]

Take the lever off the bars, and attach the 10ml syringe to this end and the 5ml one to the caliper end.[/*]

Open the clamp on the 10ml syringe, and hold the lever up so the bleed port is vertical, and pull the lever a few times, whilst gently pulling on the syringe plunger.[/*]

Keeping the 10ml syringe vertical, open the clamp on the 5ml syringe. Push 5ml of fluid from the 10ml syringe, into the 5ml syringe.[/*]

Close the clamp on the syringe now holding 5ml (At the lever end) [/*]

Holding the calliper syringe vertically upwards, pull on the plunger a couple of times (I normally give the calliper a hard flick at this point). Wait till any large air bubbles are now at the top of the syringe, then push the plunger down until you meet resistance. Close the clamp, and remove this syringe, and put the screw back in.[/*]

Take the lever and syringe and hold them vertically. Remove the syringe, and look into the bleed port to look for fluid. It should be pretty much up to the rim. Top it up with a drop or two from the syringe, then screw the cap back on.[/*]
Job done

It took me 15 minutes to bleed front and back K24s this morning.

Mobile Atlas Creator (version 1.8 i think) allows you to create your own os maps for free by downloading tiles from multimap.

Not sure if it’ll make viewranger maps though, I’ll check when I get home. I use Alpine quest on android and regularly use the is maps I’ve created.

I joined bikeradar just so that I could pm someone about a bike they had for sale, which he sold to me.

It all worked out, I guess you just have to make sure that he pays in a way that protects both you (In case he decides to be dodgy) and him (In case something does genuinely go wrong and the frame gets lost in transit).

If only Steve Jobs was a mountain biker

Indeed, no other manufacturer would be allowed to make a cylindrical tube for the attachment of a sort of triangular soft padded thing on top as they would be accused of “slavishly” copying his designs.

I doubt a SJ designed mountain bike would come with brakes either as he’d argue they were the number 1 reason why SJ designed bikes crashed….

    😕
