Idiots do ski, this of me proves it 😳
A quick cross of the skis and bang
The one and only time I’ve hit anyone on a slope, you can just hear the Pardon at the end.
Dales_riderFree MemberI fitted some cross top brake levers to my missus’ bike, Crane Creek ones.
Dales_riderFree MemberThe closeness of some of the trees yesterday skiing unknown terrain and one bounce [down for a bump or two backup and skiing] made me think and at a ripe old age it may be prudence.
Dales_riderFree MemberJust googling skier killed etc a mix of with and without helmet. So nothing definitive.
sorry it was 120 euros, cheap there was some at 280 Euros.
Nothing decent for 40/50 Euros, bit like bike helmets you pay for lightness, ventilation and adjust-abilityDales_riderFree MemberQuite interesting really, I’m curious as to why you thought after 38 years to wear one?
I have noticed over the recent years that more and more skiers are wearing them, dunno if it’s a fashion thing, given how long skiing has been around without people wearing them..
Each to their own mind you.
So am I, maybe its a fashion thing or maybe its daughter who has persuaded me. Now she is a very good skier and we venture off piste most days, transceivers probes and shovels are to hand and she has an avalung. A few people each year die in Cham one of her friends did so very recently head injury.
Dales_riderFree MemberYou need to try road bikes, some fit some dont. Womens specific is usually bollocks, scott contessas are the same geometry as one of the mens bikes [speedster] the difference being the in line seat post and a shorter stem.
That said my wife’s current road bike is a Trek Madone 4.3 WSD which she loves. Reason behind buying it was she tried loads of bikes and that fitted.Dales_riderFree MemberThis is interesting, well maybe if you get past a page or two.
Ever wondered how much difference it would make if you made your bike lighter? I guess most serious riders once in while have concerns about their bikes whether they are light enough. As previously described the bike weight has impact on performance – especially during climbing.
Thus, I thought it was interesting to find out how much difference it makes if you ride a heavier bike up alpe d’Huez. This little trial was performed by the best rider I coach as a part of his preparation for Tour de l’avenir (U23 Tour de France) in September 2008.
In this experiment he had to ride up Alpe d’Huez four times with different setups. He was supposed to keep a pace around 275w on all four rides. The test bike was a Pinarello Prince equipped with Shimano Dura Ace and SRM crank:
1. Normal bike + 1.8L extra water in tyres(!)
This setup was quite interesting and got quite a lot of attention the day before when he had a puncture..! It was possible to fill 900ml into each tyre. Reducing weights on wheels is more important than reducing weight on non-rolling equipment e.g. bike saddle.2. Normal bike + 1,8L extra water on bike.
This setup also got some serious attention because he rode a relative fast pace compared to most riders visiting Alpe d’Huez. Thus, when he performed the trial, well-trained riders were trying to keep up with his pace because this setup looked so extreme.3. Normal bike
This setup was a completely normal bike.4. Normal bike, reduced tyre pressure only 3 bars.
The last setup was ridden with reduced tyre pressure to 3bars. This was a tough finish on the last ride up Alpe d’Huez this day. Results:
1. 52.01, 275w
2. 51.34, 277w
3. 49.40, 278w
4. 50.38, 273w1,8L extra weight costs 1.54min up Alpe d’Huez. This is a remarkable test that shows us how important weight savings are when you are riding on steep hills. Also it shows that weight savings on wheels might be more important than weight saving on non-rolling equipment. These trials were only possible because of his SRM Crank that made it possible to compare each ride up the hill. You can make similar trials to test your bike setup if you want to optimize your bike equipment. These tests can be extremely helpful for e.g. time trialists if you don’t have wind tunnel in the neighbourhood.
Dales_riderFree MemberEven the best skiers snow plough 🙂
Had a brief ski with Yves detry yesterday, he is just too the right
Dales_riderFree MemberUse your MTB shoes I’ve done many a mile using mine including 6 days riding of which 3 were a multi day sportive. Fact with a lot of top end mtb and road shoes is the shoes are the same, with the MTB one having a moulded rubber sole added.

“Just bought some new skis, Rossignol Experience 88s”
What size did you go for ??
5′ 10″ and 15 stone porker I went for 178s, good shop in Cham lent a pair for the day. A hefty 20% off made them a bargain.
Going to Lange XT 100 boots from Technica Icon Alu Comps has made driving skis a new concept.Dales_riderFree MemberJust bought some new skis, Rossignol Experience 88s.
First days skiing on them today, excellent all mountain ski. Took to steep trees off piste and they handled everything well, bumps they were at home on. Back on piste they are very stable at speed. None of the chattering from the tips or wanting to go off in different directions on flat Schuss’ so common in modern wide skis.Dales_riderFree MemberWhen I boil my brakes do I need to do it in a bag ? Will I need to bleed them afterwards?
Dales_riderFree MemberChamonix excellent snow conditions, mind it can stop snowing now thank you 🙂
Dales_riderFree MemberTyres are the secret, thousands of cars driving over here on slippy icey roads. Oh and a clever use of the force.
Dales_riderFree MemberTemp inversion affecting the visibility low down, Cham valley is clagged in sun high up with a few metres of snow and -22.
*Gets warm coat out*Dales_riderFree MemberNews from Daughter in Cham loads of fresh snow, she’s guiding in Les Houche off piste through the forest 🙂
Right packed and we are off 🙂 🙂Dales_riderFree MemberThis time tomorrow I will be on the boat heading for France and Chamonix for a pootle, followed by a trip to Avoriaz 😀

On all occasions ?
Yes, except when you do actually need to come to a stop.
Think you answered yourself there 😀
Dales_riderFree Membermikey74 – Member
Your tyres grip better when allowed to roll. Why is that stupid? I would bet that a high percentage of crashes are caused by over braking.
On all occasions ?
Object of braking is to slow down IMHO so the only correct answer iskudos100 – Member
No such thing. Different situations demand different braking techniques. The only thing that is set in stone is to not have your front brake on, without the rear……….but then again, what about endo and stoppies?
Some general rules are, never touch the front brake in a corner, always try and brake hard and fast (without skidding) trust the front brake.
Although I regularly just use the front but only when I dont want to turn.
Dales_riderFree MemberCan all those with the stupid braking ideas post some of their crash videos up

Dales Rider – cheers, yes, I thought it must be them.
Must admit, I don’t get over to the Simon’s Seat side very often, more the Barden Moor end (using the BWs of course ).
One of the best descents around is on Barden Moor all the way from Thorpe Moor Top down to Drebley, or so I hear 😉

Dales Rider – was this on the Barden estate? Just interested as I’m local and it may be a slight disincentive to all the cheekiness I’m considering when the weather improves.
You guessed it.
Funniest occurrence we had was late 90’s about a week before Christmas. A route we had done several times but this time the Head Game Keeper must have had his curtains open.
Coming from the Valley Of Desolation and across the top of Laund Plantation when we turned down to the Storiths road our lights must have shone straight into his house on Black Park. A whole possie of gamekeepers in landrovers were sent out.
We’d gone through a gate to head down towards the Strid when they turned up. Crouching down behind the wall trying not to giggle we got the gist that they were after motorcyclists / quad riders and that they must be around somewhere with a van or pickup. Even made the ptress as suspected poachers………. 😀Dales_riderFree Membergusamc – Member
Well I’ve been stopped many a time by game keepers and The Dales Wardens on the landrover tracks, they always get a discussion. As the area is open access with by-laws I just point out that one of them Forbids “carrying an electronic device for production of music”. [not the exact words but close enough] and ask if they have a mobile phone with them.
They always have, when asked does it say anything about “Cycling” they start to mutter. 😀
BTW it mentions things like Kite flying and a friend has been threatened with a prosecution for Parapenting of their land !!!!
The specific instance I mentioned earlier was to do with Climbing on a Crag they dont want people climbing on, since it happened another friend has been cautioned as we were. I have climbed on it since the Police caution as have a few others. So beware is all I’m saying.Dales_riderFree Membergusamc – Member
DalesRider
If you could post anything that might help others understand this area more I’d appreciate it.
Well its a unique set of circumstances around here as its not covered by the CROW act, not yet anyway, for what happens on the Moors. So is covered by ByLaws
The Landowner is one of the richest in the Country having 5 Major country halls and estates, a couple of mansions in Londons Picadily oh and 2 significant country estates in the Dales and The Peaks plus 1 in Eire.
He, as I said, has friends in Very high places and as far as prosecuting plebs the estate has the money. I dont think any “Ordinary” person with a small amount of land would.
The police took prints, DNA and gave us a warning but that counts to a criminalrecord on a CRB check. One friend was a teacher and very nearly lost his job.
So its just a warning, to say it cant happen is wrong, to say it will is unlikely.
BTW the charge was “Damage to shrubbery of value unknown”
