Dales_rider, I assume he was talking about snow, in which case you don’t have to be pushing hard to get all slidey.

No but lat winter wifes car was due new tyres on the front and despite me saying “Make sue they put them on the front” she was swayed by the tyre peeps. Needless to say it still wouldnt go many places in the snow.
I swapped them around and instantly had a car which performed well in the snow without the back end stepping out.

My van’s back end steps out in the snow so I make allowances even so it has the best tyres on the front and got me back this year from the alps when there was snow all the way from mountain to the dutch coast.

when you hit the brakes on a bend and the back tries to overtake the front theres not much of an option other than to stop braking, and you might not have that option.

Thats bad driving and would happen even if you had tyres with say 8mm tread on the back and 4 mm on the front.

    Facts
The more rubber you put on the road the more you stick
Tread isnt important till you get up to aquaplaning speeds
Front wheel drive cars and Rear wheel drive cars [not steer Retro83] have compensation valves in the brake line to prevent rear wheel lock up under apparent weight shift during braking.

The only time more tread on the back would make an ‘appeth of difference is at speeds in excess of 55 MPH assuming average tyre pressure of 30 psi.
A poor tread [less], or maybe a different tyre type or even different tyres on the rear axle would could cause the rear to aquaplane with traction still on the front of the car.
This is the only issue with tyre fitting IMHO.

The best tyres at the back
The tyres with the best pattern depth or the tyres that has the best grip on the road should be mounted at the back on the vehicle to decrease the risk of sliding when breaking or taking turns. The tyres with the highest studs should be mounted at the back. This goes for both front wheel and back wheel steered cars.

Man, Scotlandshire and the likes no doubt need mild winter tyres. Urban Highlanders might want winter tyres for sure. Southerners … I mean, £800 for 3 days of snow?

I live in a village [southern dales] where getting out can be a problem most winters. As for £800 well I spent £120 a pop on Michelin Agilis Alpine and they work well in all conditions all though I do swap to summer tyres simply because I have a spare set of wheels and tyres.

If anyone is in doubt as to effectiveness of winter tyres watch the video.

So “when shall I put my winter tyres back on” thats the only relevant question at the moment.
I forecast snow in the North [Scotlandshire excluded] on Tuesday 3rd December.

If you look up the hub here you will find the part number and then find another hub with same part number and tap em out.
last time I did one I used an Alivo to fix my XT hub. Same bits inside

Love the “I’m going to earn my age each year in 000;s, good luck as you get older, was’nt easy for me at 20 something as when I started in the 70’s average wage was only £4,000 and I was only on £8,000.

(Do you descend via Conistone Dib or on the BW next to the radio tower?)

Down the B/W but fancy trying the Dib some time, a mean drop off in there.

The Bridle way at one time must have gone straight on to Middlesmoor, its one of those that changes status when it cross’s the CP boundry

    Good call Pennine,
Me [living in the Dales]it would be Grassington mines, north to mossdale and the lovely descent to Conistone, cross the valley and back via 1st half of Mastiles then across to Borderley and down the back of the Quarry and return via Linton. Thats wet but not much mud.

Well from what people say they are on they cant have a lot of time to spend it, me I have all the time in the world to spend what I dont have.
I can tell you I know which is the best position to be in 😀 😀

Yes it will be muddy, indeed a swamp in places.
The bit from Bolton Bridge to Draughton will be a real drag and is normally ridden the other way around to get the best from it.
Sharphaw, dont bother in winter unless its frozen and as someone said the approach to Westy bank woods is a mud fest if the cattle have been in the fields.

Ha depends, I took a drop of £30,000 and company car 10 years ago, didnt change where I lived or what I did, took another drop 5 weeks ago and hey nothings going to change.
I just have had to look for bargains when I need something, when the supermarkets have special offers on stock up and so on.
The lack of pressure is worth it.

I love the way they leave the novices until the course is really fruity at the end

Its a different course, cross is always a gamble as to how you lay out the course. As I’m course designer and builder the they is me, I’ll change it as the day goes on if thats whats required so dont worry Crosshair.

Quick poll – if it’d been a cyclist riding out of a junction and a car hit him/her whilst driving the wrong way down a street would we be saying it’s the cyclists fault for not looking both ways? Or arranging the noose for the car driver?

He is still wrong for not looking both ways

So if you were out for a run and was hit by a car when the driver just pulled out when “Flashed”
I seem to remember that in the highway code you must look both ways when turning left.
That aside rule 183 is interesting. Makes the driver 100% at fault.

I just bought a Nokia 520, does what it says on the tin.
    Makes Calls
    Sends texts
    Gets on the internet
    takes crap photos
Seems pretty standard for a mobile phone and at £90 why would you want to spend more ?

I had a brief spin on one at Broughton last weekend, 8 PSI in the tyres it felt OK. Not sure I’d buy one but hey its the only bike not in the stable 🙂

    This was the bike 🙂

Just try checking the tension in your spokes first, as its a front they should all be equal, ping them with your finger nail. Should all have the same “Note” then try tightening the dull ones.

The Endura glasses have an adjustable arm in that it can be bent in and over your ear to help retention.
They go fairly clear in fact enough so to ride at night, as I did last night. Not sure how fast the transition is for going in and out of dense wood land have yet to try that.
