Gotcha. Nice pic, hope it’s like that tomorrow. Cheers.

seatoller – Honister – scarth gap – black sail – sty head – seatoller

best big day out in the country I reckon.

I’ve got a GPS route for this that says it was published in issue 19 of ST. It shows that you ride from Seatoller to Buttermere (Lake not village) on the road, is there a cheeky offroad alternative? I’m sure I’ve been up Fleetwith Pike before, as part of a different ride though. Thinking of starting at Buttermere too, as I only live 10 mins from there.
Can’t believe I haven’t done it before but I do know what to expect! I’ll soon find out tomorrow morning. :D

What’s the one that takes in Scarth Gap, Black Sail, Styhead and Honister? Is that the 4 Passes?
The Borrowdale Bash with the cheeky bits added, so you don’t end up with as much tarmac. That’s where I’m going after I’ve had my tea! :D

    Edit: Freeridenick already answered!

You can’t mention that in a public place!

I bought an estate for the fitted roofbars. I have 3 bike racks fitted to this and then have 3 plastic tubs that fit in the boot perfectly.
The tubs work out great as I given one to each person who comes riding with me. Stuff doesn’t get muddled up and there’s no faff loading the car.
The only problem I’ve had is the windscreen getting scratched with rain washing grit off the bikes on to it. I’ve thought of a towbar mounted carrier but I’m making do for now, as I have done for the 4 years I’ve the car!

d45yth – I think the OP means he wants the actual map to display on the GPS unit, not just the GPX track.

So he does! I was knackered when I was on here last night.
To answer the question then, no, the MM ones won’t work. Garmin would rather you use their own. The best I can suggest would be to use open source mapping, here’s a link to a mtb specific mapping site: Openmtbmap[/url]. I don’t know how straight forward it is, but there are tutorials on there.

Grum – You’ve made the same mistake as me…It’s the Troutbeck near Penrith the OP’s staying at. I deleted my original post after recommending a few rides, including yours.

It makes me laugh on here when folk are surprised what plumbers and such like can earn. Why is that? Because you can’t believe that people who never went on to higher education earn more than yourselves? It’s the people who work hard and are prepared to get their hands dirty that deserve to make decent money, not some pen pushers, talking bollocks in an office.
I know quite a few folk who left school without any qualifications at all, got a trade and became good at it. Now they’ve got there own businesses and make lots of money…their property portfolio’s would sicken a lot of folk on here. :P

I always enjoy the ride from Sedburgh that goes up The Calf (Howgill Fells). Great when the weather’s nice. The Bowderdale Valley goes on for ages too.
I think it was once described in Singletrack as being like ‘the mountains of the Lakes, draped with the grassy carpet of the Dales’! Something like that anyway. :D

For me to use my MM routes on my Edge 605, I save the file as a GPX and then convert to a CRS file. I use a program called ‘Gpx2crs’ for this, which is a free download. There’s is also a website that can convert any GPS file format to lots of different ones too…I can’t remember the name of it though.

Edit: Not the website I was thinking of, but you can convert files on GPSies.com. You could see if the routes you want are on there too and you can download in various formats to save converting.

Is this the most suitable for mtbing?? My only concern is that it may be too warm for this time of year. Or is it worth looking at another brand??

    Yes, yes and yes!

beware ball end allen keys btw.. can round heads out. don’t recommend.

The ball end of an allen key is only meant for unscrewing the bolt once it’s already loose. They’re actually very handy in hard to reach area’s.
I laughed last week when Pinkbike reviewed a Park toolkit and commented on the spanners, saying they seem a bit cheap, being made of thin, pressed metal but they’ve always done the job of loosening bolts…idiot reviewer, he was talking about the cone spanners!

Torx keys. Probably a T25 for that bolt.

Are you heavy? There’s not normaly any need to put a 203mm rotor on a trail bike. It’s usually downhillers that use them. Some trail forks won’t be rated for them either.

I’ve just heard it mentioned in a few online video’s by those preparing fruit, maybe they’ve just been taken in by marketing BS. It’s not something I practice, I just use standard, stainless steel knives.

I despair at what some people relish in eating! I see my dad eat nothing but meat and fried food. My jaw would hit the ground if I saw him eating veg or fruit, simpleton.

clubber – Not really – a lightweight proper full susser is that. they may well be the ultimate long distance low maintenance bikes (though I’ve seen softails need a fair bit of attention to the ‘shock’ in previous incarnations.

I maybe should have said for bikepacking, with having a full, uninterupted front triangle, you can get a decent sized frame bag in there. Soft-tails have been quite popular with Tour Divide riders for this reason.

loum – Restaurant kitchens use plastic knives for shredding lettuce, so there could be truth in it.

I don’t know if oxidized fruit and veg is bad for you, but using plastic/ceramic knives will stop them turning brown.

22.5″ – too big – I almost had enough change down the back of the sofa.

Seat tube has to be long to get all the gubbins in at the back.
If you look at the difference between where the seatclamp is and where the top tube is, you’ll see the frame is more like a “19.
I’ve got a soft-tail with a similar design and even though the seat tube is 21.5, it’s actually a 17″ medium.
For anyone wanting a Ti soft-tail though, you’d be as well buying a brand new Moots YBB.
If your pockets aren’t that deep, you could always try my Siren Song…STW Classifieds. :P
Despite how ugly most of you think they look, they’re the ultimate long distance bikes…just enough squish to take the sting out the tail, no pivots to maintain/replace and an air shock that only requires 3 o-rings to do a full service.

I know some vegans and veggies use ceramic knives when chopping fruit. Apparently if you use metal ones it oxides the fruit, which they reckon is bad for you…has your blender got ceramic blades?!?

Main thing I would say is to make sure they giving you what you want. Some will seem to listen to you, then present you with something the complete opposite of what you asked for!
I wanted some plans drawn for turning my 70’s bungalow into a house, as I can’t change the shape of it, all I could do was take the roof off and build up. When I got the quote from one outfit, they wanted 4 grand for a site survey and another 4 grand for 3d drawings. All I wanted was the plans to give to a builder and had explained this to them. A month later after I hadn’t been back in touch, they sent a new quote for what I’d originally asked for! Cheeky twunts.
Try and go with personal recommendations, I was put in touch with a bloke who didn’t even charge for coming out to see what I wanted done. He listened to my ideas and came up with suggestions where things could be improved/changed. Ended up a third of the price of the first lot!
Things can get complicated if they’re project managing and you’re getting something out of the ordinary. If what you’re wanting has been done a 1000 times before, things should go more smoothly.

I’ve found the Speedcross 2’s lethal on wet rock.

The one thing you seem to be overlooking is bulk…a Neoair will pack up smaller than a foam mat. The POE Peak elite is a popular choice too.
Like stated above though, when in colder conditions you might want something with more insulation. It can get down to 0deg on the TDR, can’t it?
Have a look at past competitors kit lists and see what they used. Good luck too!

    – Price, you can go away on a riding weekend and use the money for a B n B instead.
    – Too many entrants. Who wants to ride with 100’s of riders anyway? Queuing, arrghhh!
    – Road bikers trying to be mtb’ers…you get stuck behind them on the descents!

I’ve always liked the Kielder series because it hasn’t got too many competitors. I guess they’d like more though?
Grizedale was a good one as it sorted out the men from the boys if it was wet.
10 at Kirroughtree was the best event I’ve ever done. Was an expensive weekend though, as I hired a van and had to buy camping gear too.

I would go on the the advice of the bag maker, unless you have a specific requirement. Wildcat make a different bike for fatbikes, where the front end tapers out to create more space for bulky winter kit.

Have a look through over peoples setups and see what you like the look of:
    MTBR
    Bikepacking.net – Rigs and MYOG.

Like stated above, Wildcat and Alpkit are more or less your only UK options. You can save a lot in postage and import tax buying from them too.

Have you looked at routes on Bike and Bivi? Bear Bones Bikepacking too.
If you need the GPS file for any of the routes, just ask on there and someone will sort you out.
GPSies has a lot of routes, including multiday ones.

bjj.andy.w – Two of my mates and myself did the same route as you today by the looks of things! It was cloudy all the way up but when we stopped for a bite to eat at the top, the sun came out. Which way did you come down, Dollywagon Pike? We did, it was excellent…first time I’d done it. :D

Postage from the US can be crippling too…I paid nearly £200 for a frame! It was something I couldn’t get over here though, I wouldn’t mail order anything from over there if you can buy it in this country.

“I’ve been told that it’s better to let furnished as it gives you more rights”

It goes without saying you’ll get more money if the property furnished but it doesn’t give you more rights! If someone moves in with no possessions and you want them out, it can end up being more complicated.
My dad owns a lot of property and says he will never keep any of them furnished again. It’s something extra for you to sort out too, especially if you’ve got new tenants moving in every 6-12 months and they haven’t looked after stuff.

I can’t see why they would be a problem…has it got a maxle rather than a standard qr? I’ve got the same fork on my hardtail and think it’s better than my Fox fork on my other bike!

I’m sorry to sound so snobbish, but IMO they are underspecced for the frame. Kinda like putting remoulds on a ferrari

    I’ve never heard such s$%^&!
