Some people do seem to be prepared to shell out serious money to try and to fill the yawning void where their soul should be
Too true! I despair for anyone who feels the need to get £££££’s in debt for something like a car. Especially the ones who don’t do thousands of miles a year.
I can’t knock anyone who does have the cash though and are buying because they like nice things…earning a lot is ‘VERY’ different to having a lot of money.

Set of allen keys, cable cutters, a bottom bracket tool and a cassette tool.

EDIT: A chain tool and a screwdriver or two as well.

There’s a good chance you should be able to demo any of those in the Lakes. I wouldn’t go for the Intense though…it’s quite a bit heavier than the others you mention, and after owning an Intense myself, won’t ever buy another (good bikes to ride, not to own).

EDIT: Do you really need 160mm travel for an all-day bike? I live in the Lakes myself and the fastest folk I know all have 140mm.

there is a llllllloong fire road climb

The fact that the OP is doing Helvellyn, he may find the climb quite short! Anyway, there is still a fair bit of climbing on the south.
If you’ve only time to do one, I’d do the north…depending on how much time you’ve got though, the whole lot can be done in less than 2 hours.

Why waste money on the car (especially white wheels!), when you could waste it on your bike instead? 🙄

The drop down Garburn to Troutbeck is no longer worth the slog/carry/push up from Kentmere, in my opinion.

Funny how many posters say exactly the same thing, with a posting history of exactly one post? It’s almost like the company in question were spamming the board???
    +1!

EDIT: I just saw that this thread is 6 months old too!

Who’s abusing Bartoli? There’s no need for it, I like it on my toast. 🙂

Apart from one or two computer nerds I know, the others who play games are all stoners! When some of them packed the weed in, the gaming would stop a few weeks later.

For the record, I don’t do either of the above.

I think Scandium alloy was originally used by the Russians for missile heads…maybe similar stuff in the ad?

EDIT: Even this gun which uses a lot of aluminium, lists it as still being high grade aircraft aluminium.

The barrel is Chrome lined, cold hammer forged chromolybdenum steel. The upper & lower receiver are built from high grade aircraft aluminum.

Oh dear, folk being shocked at stuff like this…do you really think this is the worst of what goes on? 🙄

Have a look at the Nicolai forum on MTBR…if there’s any info, it’ll be on there.

Just use summer, XC mountain bike tyres (like what rrr suggests) with a high PSI.

Buying a new big money bike is for poseurs and the weak willed.

and enthusiasts or those prepared to spent the cash. I was going to write more, but I’ll leave it at that. 🙂

I’ve seen play like that which was down to the skewer not tightening properly…I think the skewer cam was worn and was loosening slightly after going past a certain point. It wasn’t my bike, so I don’t know all the ins and outs.

Have you thought of a small frame bag?
I ordered mine from the US, but there are similar, cheaper ones on eBay.

I’ve ridden plenty (lately mostly through London and other cities) with lots of weight in them, and they seem a particularly GOOD way to carry a load, to me. There would also be extra space if I do need to carry say lots of water or food.

You’ve hit the nail on the head, panniers are a very good way of carrying lots of kit and heavy loads…with bikepacking most folk are trying to get away from that though and carry as little as possible.

Regarding bag weights, it’s possible to get the lot below 1kg. Of course it depends on the materials used though. My bar and seat bag (L and M respectively, made by Bikepack.pl) weigh a little over 500g and can carry 15L. I’m sure they could be made lighter, as the material seems durable stuff (even though they’re the lightest they make). I’ve seen some Divide riders use custom Cuben fibre stuff (made by Nuclear Sunrise, Porcelain Rocket, and the like).

The people who’ve done the tour, they’re just blokes on bikes.

Maybe, it would seem they know a lot more than you though. Anyway, to save all this arguing…Molgrips are you the kind of rider who’s bothered about saving weight? If so, get the damn bags, if not, stick to your panniers!

EDIT: I see you also mentioned you’d like to use just one bag for convenience. That’s great when what you want is in the bottom of the bag. 🙄 Having you kit spread out is much better, then you can lay your hands on what you need with minimal faff.

It’s not so bad when you get rid of something to replace it with a similar item. I’ve only had regret when I’ve sold something to pay a bill or have spent the money on rubbish.

Any bikes I’ve missed have been because they served a certain purpose, rather than what model/make they were…I shouldn’t have sold my last hardtail!

Be wary of knocking on folks’ door to complain about things. My mate did, the bloke in the house kicked off and tried to crack him…long story short, my mate hit him and the bloke fell awkwardly of his front step. He ended up with a nasty spiral fracture to his leg…my mate got 6 months and wasn’t even allowed to stay in the same village while the case was on going (nearly another 6 months!).

I normally use MemoryMap, only because I bought it years a go though. GPSies.com and BikeRouteToaster are both good too. Don’t be tempted by OS Getamaps low price…I paid for it and found it has too many restrictions. You don’t really need to pay for anything these days.

A lot of the online programs have peoples uploaded routes too…unless you’re planning an extra long route, most decent routes in your area will be available to download.

I have a Terra Nova Photon Elite…it may be called something else now though. It’s just a lighter version of the Laser anyway. You only need to insert/remove the pole…the rest of it can be rolled/unrolled in one. I’ve heard one of the new Vaude models is also good. There are a lot of small companies making lightweight tents in the US too, most need a walking pole to support them though.

I have to say, all this talk of gear and especially tents is getting me all worked up.. I love tents..

Sorry to sound a £$%^, but you’d do well to ignore a lot of the advice in this thread regarding tents…having a heavy tent due to budget constraints is one thing, but to spend a lot of money on one weighing more than 1kg is ridiculous for bikepacking (like what’s been suggested). Look for tents where you pitch the inner and fly at the same time, as they can put up and taken down in a couple of minutes. I see there’s been mention of TN Lasers being like crisp packets, yet when it comes to mats, the Neoair is the crinkliest thing going?!? I’ve just replaced my Neoair with something else because of this.

carradice were the inventors of bike packing anyways (without inventing fancy new names for carrying stuff on bikes)

What’s up with folk? OP, have you been all over Scotland? If not, why travel over the border? I live in Cumbria and apart from loving it here, I travel to Scotland when getting away (by car). I know you wouldn’t mind some sun, but the forecast is good for a while after tomorrow.

I’ve only been unemployed twice in my life and both times was more than 25 years ago but I made getting a new job a full time job, not something I fitted in around my social life or Tiswas.

Yes, so you have absolutely no idea what it’s like to look for a job these days…that’s without going into what qualifications someone may have or what area they live in too!

I was going to do it the other week…I didn’t fancy doing the hike-a-bike sections with all my bikepacking stuff though.

pjm84 – I doubt it…give it a go though! I’m going off something like the BearBones 200, which, give or take, can be done by top riders in 18hrs. It doesn’t have the same amount of hike-a-bike or ascent as the Lakeland 200 (6400m of climbing!).

EDIT: I see the BB200 has been done in 15hr18m.
