i remember in my repping days watching a nameless mech in a shop dismantle some forks in front of me whilst chatting/making tea..

cant remember what forks they were but do remember them launching thru the ceiling into the flat above..thought to myself then why do shops service forks? we do service simple ones im just talking about the fox/dh forks..

Elfinsafety,i buy products based on the brand perception/quality before i think about margin….(not a very good business model but i like stuff that sells itself)

its true that i like earning money and am driven by selling stuff but the business also employs and pays for people to live,we support loads(too many) charities we help local riders/schools and go to the odd race as race support…im also on the commitee for building local trails…ive never just seen the shop as a way of making myself rich(cos it wont)

how do you sleep at night knowing that youve got a bike thats made up of unethical products/leather shoes etc?? it did make me chuckle…

ha ha! ive thought about rolling out 2 levels of service,internet and in the shop…but we look after everyone the same cos we dont discriminate!

as for bad attitude i guess its the reverse of what some of stw readers have experienced….i get customers who come in expecting a massive discount/price match/loadsa advice and then go buy it obviously online…if i sus em out early enough they get none of the good stuff!

i had a woman strop out of the shop because she wanted to try on a pair of assos bibs…she then followed it up by saying she wanted the size right before she purchased online(elsewhere) i said i couldnt help her and explained why…..she left and i waved her off!

i went to a november fireworks party years ago and one of the guests was a navy clearance diver.he turned up with all sorts of ordnance which was duly let off for the entertainment of the gathered throng…my ears rang for a week! brilliant!

we do a special build called the inverno with full 105/carbon fork/deda finishing kit/alloy frame made by dolan…good value at a grand

or weve sold 3 kinesis bikes so far all under £1k they looked really smart..

then you get into all the cross bikes that you can easily convert…

pros; loadsa local contacts some i still use..
id paid for the fees in a month or two
its effectiveness depends on your business…i have a freind who turns over £80k a year thru his carpet biz

cons; early start…i couldnt hack it after a while
its hard to network out of your area(ie online)
and my biz(bike shop) soon became saturated

really useful for the info/contacts when just starting up tho!

i had one last year and theyre stunning….climbing/decending everywhere! just took me a while to get used to after coming off a winter ti bike….great bike.dont go out on a right windy day tho!

as far as i know the bikes are all going to be kept by the particpants…(i spoke to marks sister last night) but that may be a good idea to raise some more money!

for what i know of the scottish series its pretty big…most races get sold out and have over 300 competitors..i was gonna have a bash at a couple this winter too although i struggle with a lack of competitive spirit! if your keen on doing any in scotland speak to craig hardie(hardie bikes) as he does a lot of em…
