    Cheers buzz!

If you had kids then this could be your 10 year old one day!

It’s never the right time to have kids.

But it’s always the right time to make love.

Feel safer in a group and am rubbish at following directions.

I will check the BC site. Good shout Kryton57!

Swoon at my Wiggle platinum discount peasants!

Saving for a new place at the moment so haven’t splurged since an XTR crankset in May. The flip side about moving out of our rented place was selling heaps of unwanted/unused things on eBay. That paid for an SS wheelset, Rohloff tensioner, some POC knee and elbow pads, helmet and 2 pairs of gloves.

The downside? 7 pairs of gloves I had. Managed to pack them all in storage and had to buy a new pair of gloves! Going to be skint once we move into the new place in November so no bike purchases apart from essentials like BC membership, insurance, new tyres for the road bike and maybe some winter specific gear for the new, longer commute. Nearly capitulated and bought a new helmet in the CRC sale, but reason prevailed.

I have no idea why I want to buy more things for the mountain bike. It’s pretty much perfect. It seems the money would be better spent riding in places new.

Gutted for you mate. That is a lovely bike. Hopefully your insurance will sort it and I will keep an eye out for it. Have you set up Gumtree, eBay alerts and the like?

For the record, I’m a rubbish driver.
I’m a crap runner and cyclist too
    We have much in common.

Sometimes things will get caught in the tread pattern and strike the frame (seatstay usually). Watch out for that before suspecting other components.

I would run a rear with tight clearance especially on a hardtail, but think twice about the front. Some tyre/rim/fork combos seem to have more interference under fork compression.

Is there that much difference between the 140mm Bandit and the 160mm Covert?

They are lovely looking bikes by the way!

I am more interested in where this late night bar in Bristol is. You could never find a drink after 2am there.

I know someone who works for them in the UK. They are legit if that’s what you’re wondering. I have bought a bit of stuff from them myself and a few people in the club have too.

Got to see them a couple of years ago. Maybe they are past it, but still a great band to watch!

Beautiful dog. They look so calm. Having a dog to come home to is one of the best feelings in the world.

Will this book take you from novice to your first wheelbuild? I have a lovely roval hub I’d like to rescue from its current rim.

Start taking beta-carotene supplements and see if she notices when you turn orange. If she doesn’t then she is cheating on you.

Sounds good. It’s for a winter single speed and I’ve got Hope hubs so conversion shouldn’t be a problem.

I can probably wait till December I reckon.

This bike looks pretty interesting. I know of these guys and they ride quite close to me. Was saving the pennies for a Slackline 631, but if this comes out before winter, there’s a frame and forks option and it can take 26″ wheels without killing me then it’ll be a difficult choice!

Still doubt there’s a pub paying 12.50 an hour.

If you don’t need the money then quit the hobby job and spend it riding/with your family/watching Premiership football, whatever.

If it’s something where you can pick work up as you require it then you can always try a couple of months “sabbatical” and go back to it if you miss the extra cash.

Some days after a big ride I am so tired I get to a stage where I am lying in bed thinking “I’m tired, I’m definitely going to nod off now”, but sleep never comes. I think it’s because I’ve not gone to bed at the right time. Which should have been 30-60 minutes before my normal bedtime.

Did you feel like this? Like you were tired but couldn’t sleep, or were you feeling good and wide awake?

My Scott weighs over 10kg. I don’t think anyone would call your bike heavy.
I’d buy a Selle, but that’s because I have one on my MTB.

    Pictures of current bike?

Would Ashton Court and Oktoberfest be a painful first introduction to racing?

No, it’s a pretty friendly race and was my first one. The singletrack is wider than you think and all the guys overtaking were pretty polite to me.

The only time it was painful was when I crashed into a tree on my last lap!

@xiphon not really the point is it? That guy’s someone who’s spent most of his youth on his bike.

I get what you’re saying about creative uses of time. If I were solely focussed on MTB then yeah, I would make time to hone my skills and whatnot. Fortunately or unfortunately I just like riding bikes, and secondarily, keeping fit. If I have 20-30 spare minutes then it’s probably going to be spent going for a run or an interval session on the commute because I feel that serves my purposes best. The shops are a 2 minute walk from my place, and I don’t think I can take the urine doing it like this guy:

Yeah, of course, if I’m commuting on the MTB then I will try and work in the little pump track the local BMX bandits have built in the park, but it’s never going to be a substitute for a dedicated skills day at a purpose built venue. I don’t think you’re suggesting it is either.

Whether it worked or not, I’d say give it a shot mate. Else you’d never know right?

I did long distance with the ex. Well, far enough away for it to be weekends only and it ended in tears. However, I firmly believe if you put the work in and you’re truly committed to understanding each other then it will work. Obviously emotional maturity is a big component, but you seem like a solid guy.

Plus it’s slim pickings in Somerset. The cider is not kind to their teeth.

@alpin I think by “professionals”, he means they both have careers and aren’t marking time waiting for Prince Charming/Cinderella on whom their entire fate rests upon and whose lives will be made a misery when they fall short of those lofty expectations.

I’ve checked. The Edge 800 won’t pair with the footpod Garmin sell.

I know what people mean about training through feel. HR training on the bike I do by feel, but I had to use the gadget to get a feel for the zone first. I don’t know if I could do it the other way around. Same with bike cadence.

I’ve tried the “count for 20 seconds and multiply” method, but it just doesn’t work on the longer runs. I’ve got enough to focus on without trying to make sure I’m counting footstrikes right and remembering which second I began counting from. Simpler to buy the gadget.

The 910XT is crazy money. I was thinking about the 610 + Footpod. Good to hear people are having positive experiences with them.

@mrblobby Isn’t the beepy thing annoying?

    curiousyellow

Yes, usually I look at the Garmin and count footstrikes for 20 seconds and multiply by 3. However, I don’t have a watch so carrying the Garmin is proving to be annoying.

I can either buy a watch, or buy a GPS watch with cadence sensor. Guess which one I want to do? 🙂

Less than £15 using a wheelbox for a couple of wheels through Royal Mail via Parcelforce I believe.

I think they can record your foot cadence when you’re running as well. Usually paired with a GPS watch. I don’t think the bike specific GPSs can pick them up.

I would love to go messing about on the pavements and ride the little dirt track in the small park near me. Unfortunately, things like time, available light, living in an apartment block, having to change just to ride your bike for 20 minutes means it’s not really an option for me (and probably most city dwellers).

Most of my riding is on a road bike. The closest I get to messing about is when I commute on the mountain bike. That’s usually to get it to the mechanic because something needs attention so “hooning” about is not the uppermost thing on my mind.

The sort of thing you’re talking about was what we did when we were kids on bikes. There’s not much room in your life if you’re working and have a family for that sort of thing. I do agree it would improve your bike handling skills though.

Stupid seat tube standards. Do I get a 30.9mm for my current bike, or a 31.6mm for my future build?

Assuming the different lengths are for people with kinked vs non-kinked seat tubes?
