    I did look into Khan Academy, but I don’t want to rely on a screen.

    Looks like I’ll be digging out my copy of Stroud at some point.

    Just ordered Stroud and the Edexcel books. Cheers Folks.

    @Flaperon I’ll see if I can get some old textbooks.

    @jolmes
    do you have a link to any of those books please?

    @elliptic
    I think I have that book somewhere. But it’s probably easier to order a new one than find it!

    My situation is a bit like yours. Terrible roads around here.

    I’m running 1x and 33mm Clement PDXes on my CX bike which is my only “road” bike. The difference around my local 30km loop is a minute or so speed wise.

    Lot more fun though. Like Bez said, if you’ve got your position right then everything will be fine.

    There is a spare way for the electricity. I don’t know what it means by “up to spec” it’s for a new building.

    Thanks to everyone who put their costs up. Sounds like I’m being quoted around what it should cost.

    Sounds like I could save some cash putting the cable in place, but not sure I can do a good enough job.

    I really rate their down jackets. They’ve repaired one of my Gilets thrice. The Filo is the first thing I reach for in the winter.

    Unfortunately, everything else they make is for someone whose been at the pies all through the year. Shame really, if the sizing was better I’d be buying a ton more stuff from them.

    It’s a dividend cheque, so there are basically no humans I can speak to and change things. All the accounts I’ve seen that accept cheques charge a processing fee so that’s out.

    So, I got the RHA MA650s found what I thought was a good deal on Amazon US shipped for £70-ish including taxes and whatnot. They turned up a week earlier than the promised delivery date.

    Sound is decent for audio only, but for video I found myself wishing for my Sennheiser Momentums.

    Getting a seal on them using the memory foam tips is incredibly fiddly if you have the wrong shaped ears. My right ear fits them well, the left does not.

    Wishing I’d gone for the higher end ones. I’ve mailed RHA asking for some help, let’s see if the customer service claim holds up.

    I’d be super pissed if I’d paid full UK retail for them, but as things stand I can try and work with them. Used them for a workout and they were ok. Only dropped them once. Will be better with the memory foam ones I think. I was using them with the normal rubber tips prior.

    If someone is unhappy they owe it to themselves to ovary/nut up and confront why this is so. Especially so if they’re an adult.

    Unfortunately, you can’t force someone to “adult”. OP seems to be able to find happiness in what he does. If his OH can’t then that’s a hard problem to have. I feel his pain. You want to help, but the other person needs to want your help too OP :(

    So, I sent it to Seiko and it looks like my father had the movement, crown and strap replaced at some point so they’re not able to do any work on it to fix it. I tried to reach a compromise, but the age of the watch means a repair isn’t really possible.

    Fair play to Seiko, they did the inspection and return to me for free. A bit gutted because I got a quote for a repair originally :(

    Anyone know an indie watch tech who can replace a movement in a Seiko?

    What about using them in the gym? Maine reason I can’t use my over ear headphones is because they slide off my head when lying down and get uncomfortable when you’re hot.

    Thanks!

    The over ear design might be good for keeping things in place, but I’m not sure that’s worth an additional £50! Any owners care to comment?

    Little bump for this.

    I’m thinking about the RHAs. Anyone mind telling me what the extra £50 for the MA750s over the MA650s gets me please?

    If 60:40 means you get it done and dusted ASAP then do it.

    Even 66:33 means worst case you get 29k-ish instead of 40k. Is 11k really worth the hassle? You’d probably save that cash toot sweet if you didn’t have too much of blowout post-divorce ;-)

    It’s a 7123-8520-P

    I tried to find a picture of it, but all the ones I can find don’t have the lion head on them that this one has. Instead, they have a “Seiko” logo instead of the lionhead. Knowing my father, he bought it specifically for the lion head! :)

    I’ll call Seiko tomorrow and ask what the deal is. Looks like they have trouble guaranteeing repairs for anything before 1999 due to part availability, so it may not be feasible.

    The watch could be between 27 and 37 years old. It would be pretty cool to have something like that I could pass on. I was thinking of buying a fancy watch soon, but this one has a much cooler story behind it, so I might just hang on to it and damn the expense :)

    That’s what I was just thinking. They’re so close to me as well, I could just drive there and drop it off.

    Near Reading, so not that far away.

    Looks like Seiko’s service centre is in Maidenhead and I’m looking at around £80 -100 for a service to repair the movement. Wonder if there’s a cheaper way to do it.

    But do you actually own the track when you purchase a track on iTunes? I thought you only purchase a license to listen to the music. You can’t transfer it to anyone. For example, if you die, then you can’t leave your iTunes purchases to your family/friends/cat.

    May have changed because I saw someone had filed a lawsuit about it. Not sure what the outcome was.

    I’m guessing the term exists as an insult by self appointed gatekeepers who seem to exist in all walks of life.

    Usually it describes someone with equipment beyond their current skill level. Using it usually speaks more about the person tossing the term about than the person who’s the target of it.

    It doesn’t offend me really. I used to get worked up about it as a child. You’d see it a lot in tennis. People on court with the latest rackets and clothes the champions were using when they’d have been better off getting some instruction, or focusing more on their fitness.

    With bike riding, arguably there are no bad choices. The more you pay, the nicer the bike and a nice bike always rides well.

    With some sports you will actively worsen your enjoyment at best, and injure yourself at worst by making incorrect equipment choices. For example, the pros use rackets a lot heavier than most club/recreational level players can comfortably wield because their needs are different. The strings they choose are less durable, but are chosen for characteristics that complement their particular style. Blindly aping what they use will most likely injure you because you’re not strong enough to swing a 300-350g racket for a few hours a day. In those cases you could argue they mean well, but it’s harder to counsel someone than just toss a derogatory term around casually I guess.

    Morally, I’ve got no objection to anyone going out and buying what they want. I enjoy seeing a nice bike as much as the next person to me. With clothes, it’s nice to look good. It makes you feel good. It doesn’t hurt me or my enjoyment one iota.

    @Shackleton

    I think Northwind is referring to how the Conservatives have clamped down on employment regulations around overseas (non-EU) students during/after graduation. It used to be a lot simpler to work in the UK after graduation. It has now become a lot more difficult to stay on and work for a limited period of time prior to returning to your country. There is also the added rhetoric about deportation (which is deplorable) which was not as prevalent as it is now.

    Basically, the path to a career for a non-EU graduate in the UK is a lot harder than it used to be.

    @mcj78

    Not sure whom you mean, because I certainly don’t begrudge their right to strike for better terms. If the university employees have a right to strike then they’re welcome to it. It’s unfair on the students who are paying for an education to still be charged for a service that’s not being provided.

    curiousyellow

    @Northwind

    By instability I meant instability for the universities. Political instability in the 3rd and developing world make the UK look like a paragon of stability. Media is already carrying stories about Chinese students complaining about the strike which will then be followed by the Easter holidays. A refund request wouldn’t be unreasonable.

    Let’s say at £10k a year, and 40 weeks of teaching puts a week’s refund at around £250 per student (more for medicine and Masters students I guess?). Will they see any of that money back? I sure as hell would want it back if I were them.

    I fully agree with you on your other points. Local perception of students is very different to what is marketed abroad. Seeing as you work in the industry, can you tell me if they make students aware of how hostile the government is towards them?

    curiousyellow

    @Northwind

    Part of the reason it attracts so many overseas customers is because people see the UK as a place that’s relatively stable. Part of the reason several students (even gifted ones who get scholarships in their own country) choose to pay for an education in countries like the UK is stability. It’s very common for students and teachers in government universities to strike for various – and sometimes ludicrous – reasons. A degree that takes 3 years can take 4-5 years due to instability.

    What do you think those students will do if there’s a perception of instability?

    Sure, if they’re posing as someone selling a miracle weight loss cure, then that’s fine.

    But these are professors shilling their universities. People used to respect teachers at these institutions. It’s hard to hold a 19 year old student responsible. The number of first year undergrads I know who pick a degree having deeply researched their chosen institution, intended career and the correlation to earning potential are very few and far between.

    Maybe you can blame it on their parents. But a lot of times these are people sending the first person from their family to university. They’ve not got the education, the capability or a reason to suspect they’re being sold a pup. In my opinion it’s not far off mis-selling a financial product.

    Do you know how aggressively universities market in foreign countries and how little they focus on practicalities? It would make the average cryptocurrency scammer blush. For local students degrees are at worst a low cost loan which will eventually be written off. A lot of foreign students’ parents are mortgaging their houses, or going all in on their life savings to give their kids an education. It’s time they were more responsible with their promises.

    Universities at a minimum should be made to publicise stats like class sizes, degree completion rates, degree classifications obtained, and how many students work in a related field within a year of completing their degrees. Maybe an average salary for a degree holder vs a non-degree holder in a related field would be good too.

    I remember a professor at Kingston University saying he teaches students for jobs at McDonnel Douglas, not McDonalds. Meanwhile, they don’t tell you that in reality applications for grad placements are oversubscribed at 22:1, or even some guidance through the job application process. McD got bought out over 20 years ago.

    For the fees they charge students now they should offer a much better service.

    For sure.

    I’d also suggest having a target for what you want the coins you buy to reach. This will keep you disciplined. Know what you want from it, and take profits as you get there. Know what you want your money to do for you.

    Also, if you’re going to buy and hold instead of actively day trade, then look at taking your coins off the exchange and holding them in an offline wallet. Exchanges get compromised all the time.

    At the very minimum have 2FA setup.

    Good luck.

    If you get a Fidor bank account you can transfer to Kraken for a flat fee of £2.50 using a SEPA transfer. Your money shows up on Kraken as Euros.

    Transfer back in from Kraken via SEPA to any bank that accepts them. Kraken charge .09 of a Euro for a transfer out in Euro. Your bank then applies whatever the exchange rate is for the money inbound.

    verification on Coinbase was a pig, so I gave up after a while.

    @chiefgrooveguru

    I thought the way the program went was:

    – Increase weight until you can’t do 5×5 for an exercise.

    – If you fail 5×5 3 times then deload 10%

    – When you fail to make progress after a deload (some say after 3 deloads) switch to 3×5.

    – When you fail to make progress on 3×5 you switch to 1×5.

    That’s my understanding anyway.

    Failed OHP, bench and squat last week.

    I set a deadlift goal this year for a 1 rep max which I’m supposed to hit on my next workout for 1×5. Progression on this program when followed regularly has been insane. It’s my 6th week this year and it’s really paying dividends! However, I’m taking it a bit easy this week and focusing on getting some rides in now it’s getting warmer. The gym is fun, but I’m starting to forget why I started weightlifting in the first place! Anyone else in that camp?
