You could use the little spacer kit to get around it if it is a problem.

    Neither!

PP Shan or Slackline 631. There are some deals on at the moment.

    £100 for a saddle

I’d pay that for the right saddle. As a bonus, the cost per ride decreases linearly the more you ride!

What Neil Gaiman books should I go for next after just finished American Gods?

    Anansi Boys
Neverwhere (the graphic novel version is beautiful as well)

Looks like a pretty good jacket for running and as an emergency stash and forget jacket in the MTB pack for autumn/spring rides.

I’ll stick to my softshell for winter riding.

Tempted to buy a second one at this price so I can have one for running and one for cycling though!

Isn’t the freestroke for nervous brakers? That way you can curb yourself of that awful habit of braking for no reason right?

Roughly middle of ball over the centre of pedal. No more cramp and much more control.

Yeah, but it doesn’t stay there for long!

Ah crap. Ordered now anyway. It’ll have to be the ICE jacket in the pack I guess.

Only way I’ve seen it being done was when using international cheques.

I swear I’ve seen a few sob stories about people who’ve paid their mortgage deposits to the wrong account number. Oh well, perhaps things are different now.

To be honest, the biggest problem I find with clips is not the taking the foot off the pedal but putting it back on…

YES! The trail pedals help though.

I’ve been riding clipless for about 2-3 years now since I started riding bikes seriously. Both on and off-road. I recently got a bike with flats just to mess about on.

I am not far off my downhill segment times on flats, but it doesn’t feel as controlled and I can’t help feeling like I’ve lost that control you get of the back end if you’re on SPDs.

It just feels different, but I prefer SPDs. Maybe things will change once I learn to ride better.

What is the secret to keeping your feet on the pedals then?

And where are your feet supposed to be? I tried the midfoot pedal position but I seem to have a tendency to band my foot on the ground when pedalling uphill on rolling trails.

Leave it as it is. I’ve been riding with a very large flat spot on a lightweight rim for years now.

They’ve replaced the crown assembly on my forks FOC when they went in for service.

Depends on what the warranty period is though. Mine was coming up to 18 months.

There are more capable bikes out there for 4 figures new?

Given the choice between £1250 for a used Yeti and £1600 for a new bike I’d rather save up and buy a new bike. You’ll probably get some people who *really* want one, and I was one of those a while back, but I’d struggle to justify it now.

To be fair some clubs are better organised than others.

God I miss TCC. Round where I live is just not the same. Riding is better but the organisation is not.

Riding with a group is brilliant if they’re well organised. Really brings you on when you’re unfit, let’s you gauge how far you’ve come when you are.

If this guy’s behaviour bothered me enough I’d have a word. Or refer to it in the next group ride e-mail.

Let him surge if he wants. As long as he’s not doing anything dangerous then I’d not waste my energy thinking about him.

I thought most group rides allowed for the hills to be taken at your own pace and regrouped at the top?

    Maybe not for you then.

I run a Zee rear and 1×10 (34T front). I like the short cage because it seems to keep things out of the way nicely like large twigs and so on. Plus price wise it’s on par with SLX. Clutch seems stiffer than my XT, but that may just require some tweaking.

I’d take the bike to the Mendips happily. It’s not light at 29lbs for a hardtail, but I love it. Don’t miss the granny ring so far!

Forks wise, if standard head tube is holding you back then I’ve been really impressed by Rebas for price and I still quite like my Fox RLCs. Depends on how much travel you want I guess.

Thought about 1×10 with Zee short cage mech, XT shifter?

If you can afford it get some Pikes!

    It’s nearly 2lbs lighter!

    Claimed weight anyway.

If you start with that logic then most bikes are “practically” what you’ve already got. Just buy what you like if you can afford it.

    Agree with njee20.

Even on an ok breakfast (bagel with cream cheese, peanut butter, one apple, cup of tea), mid-ride snack (2 x Jaffa cakes), cake stop and 2 x 610ml bottles of energy drink and plenty of water I am still on the brink of bonking around kilometer 115!

If you can ride 80 miles on an empty stomach then you’re most probably the exception, not the norm.

Weren’t you the one who wouldn’t go 1×10 with a 42T because it was too steep round your way? Or was it the other one?

    I don’t think anyone does.

Did see some guy on a Sportive who was wearing the lightweight Pantani jersey (the pink Rapha one). Oh how I laughed!

He had the last laugh though. It was around 30 degrees C and I had a wool base layer on. More fool me.

    1. NO TRIM!
    2. NO MORE FRONT SHIFTER TO BANG INTO THE TREES!
    3. Chain retention? Though that may be down to the clutch mech.
    4. ???
    5. PROFIT!!!

Don’t need a 40T round where I live. I don’t even use the 28T on my 40-28 and 11-36 2×10 setup, let alone the 36T on the back!

Life will be hard if I get unfit though. So that’s a gauge/motivator for my fitness level to be maintained/improved!

Hi Paul, try any of the Joe Friel bibles that relate to running. They work using a predicted PB time for a standard distance (5/10k etc).

Google turns up a bunch of stuff too.

If you use Strava Premium then you can see some analysis there if you enter your PB times for a standard race distance.
