So, 9 months later I find myself looking for more t-shirts. Any new recommendations? I’ve checked out the ones suggested by the posters, but not seeing anything in the new collections from them I like.

    Because it’s a smaller wheel?

Still thought 1600g wheels on a road bike would be plenty strong enough for commuting.

Damn, wish I’d seen those sooner!

If your wife enjoys things like circuit training and bodyweight exercises then she’ll probably enjoy Insanity/alternatives. If not, well…

Toning by simply doing a workout is impossible if you’re not at a calorific deficit. This is why diet is absolutely key. Probably more important than exercise for most people trying to lose weight.

I got the 6800s from Chaino for under £200 with BC discount. They don’t seem super light at 1600g for a road wheelset. I’ve got MTB wheels that are over a 100g lighter!

    Fusion 3s at Chainreaction.

I’ll pop them on when they arrive and return with the verdict once I’ve used them for a few days. Going with my original Gatorskin on the front while it lasts.

If the Fusion is decent as a rear then I’ll get one as a front next month.

How come? Do they need a lot more maintenance?

I’ve got the option of going back to the R500s if I have to. They’ve been faultless so far. The allure of lighter wheels, and tubeless on top of that is quite the draw though. I’m also very lightweight, and all my commuting these days is sans backpack.

Ultegra 6800 wheelset with BC discount at Chaino came in under the cost of a single Hope rear wheel so I went with that. Probably will get a couple of Schwalbe Ones from Ze Germans (bike-discount) once they’re in stock for the winter.

Went with the Hutchison in 25mm guise. I’ve got some sealant, so let’s see how it goes when they turn up! This is the first major component upgrade the road bike’s had. Can’t help feeling a bit excited by it. What a saddo I am.

    – E2 front mechs.
    – Mortgage brokers.
    – Non-tubeless tyres.

Looks like bike-discount don’t have them in stock until the 31st sadly. May take a chance on some Hutchison Fusion 3s from Chaino instead.

Yup, 105 10 Speed, but they came with R500s instead of Syncros. Probably a mid-year change, or I’ve got a 2011/2012 version.

The Ultegras look decent. I’ll see if I can snag a pair. Anyone better than Ze Germans on price? Also, are you running the tyres with/without sealant? Also, how much clearance have you got? I currently run 23mms, but I’d not mind going to 25mms, or even 28mm for fun.

@bigdugsbaws H Plus looks nice, but beyond my budget once I include tyres 🙁

Don’t something like 10% of the population have it? I have it, but I can’t say I’ve ever had to do certain things to not exacerbate it.

Having said that, I don’t drink a lot (couple of units a fortnight), I don’t eat a lot of processed carbs (a bit of cake once a month ot so) and I almost always get 7.5-8 hours sleep a night and my bedtimes are very consistent.

I am also a lot of fun at parties 🙁

In your position I would either:
    – Buy the bike that lets me ride the terrain I aspire to (short of a full on DH bike) knowing I’ll probably never get there.
    – Buy the bike that fits the terrain I get to ride the most.

If you have a young kid you’ll probably not have the time to fit the forks yourself anyway!

Either way, there are no bad bikes!

Pretty interesting post from Northwind. Thank you.

I read Batmanghelidjh’s book. It’s recommended reading in some NHS professions. While it sounds like she does want to genuinely help people it’s mixed with a hearty dose of incompetence and puffery. I don’t give a shit if she gets a bit of self promotion in there while helping people, but it also seems like she wants to build a cult around herself for self affirmation more than anything else. Still, small potatoes.

Not surprised someone like her leading an organisation would leave the accountability out. She doesn’t seem like a numbers person whose thoughts are on how to most efficiently help people. More someone who’ll go out of her way to help you if you display a willingness to be helped. Those are the stories her book has and those are the people you’ll get the most return on when helped.

I guess the flip side is there are some people who can’t be helped. Ultimately, a few senior figures getting fat off the cash is not a problem for me. As a nation we can afford it, and like Northwind states, the country has done much more for people who’ve done much less for us.

What I don’t understand is have England vastly improved over the last year, or are the Aussies in decline? Can’t recall hearing anything about any great talents, and I’m seeing the same names in the headlines. What gives?

Also, say what you want about Murali, but when he’d bowl you always felt like something was going to happen. Only other bowler who had the same effect was Warne. I don’t think there’ll be someone to replace either of them anytime soon, and the game has been poorer since they left.

My M163s started to come apart where the buckle is. If that starts happening to you if you get them then warranty them immediately.

Nothing a bit of duct tape won’t sort though.

We’re about the same weight. How much did the tokens set you back? Did you have to send them in for fitting?

Would you want a DPA on that bike when you can’t adjust it with tokens if required? I have DPAs and they’re good, but after riding a full sus with no DPA it feels like it’s an unrequired feature and the tunability is worth having over the adjustable travel.

The Norco looks really nice. I was looking at one of them, but long wait times and rumoured problems with the rear triangle put me off. The Range for 4k in their current sale does look like one of those “wouldn’t change a thing” bikes. Well, except for the DPAs!

Also, the Sight is 140mm? YT’s comparable offering is a 160mm isn’t it? Slightly different, but still great value in the sales!

Unless the child is extremeley patient or the type who would sit down with a dictionary of idioms and a dictionary to read an unabridged classic then this will turn out to at best be tedious, at worst, remain incomplete.

Buy one of those abridged collection of classics. I read them as a child. I still read the unabridged versions as an adult.

Or stick to the more “modern” classics that are easier to read if you’re dead set on it being an unabridged set. Orwell, Hemingway (Old Man And The Sea), or maybe one of the Sherlock Holmes books if they count as classics.

Or use some artistic license. If Shakespeare counts and she likes theatre, then take her to a play and read the play together when you’re done.

Went there with Conti Trail Kings earlier this year. I’d use them again and they were decent in retrospect. I did wish I had a little more grip in the looser stuff on the front, but I don’t think such a thing exists!

I think you need a large. I’m on a medium round Reading way if that helps.

E13 wheels have been fine on a trip to Spain. Can’t say I ride anywhere that the terrain is more demanding than that. I’ve not run them in any serious muddy conditions though.

    @molgrips
Tennis players also have increased bone density due to the repeated impacts. Sorry, forgot to add that. Someone else has already posted about MTB and bone density. Seems to follow the same logic.

How does the lag on the trackers work? Does it come into effect as soon as the BoE or the tracked rate increases/decreases?

Personally going for fixed because I like to know exactly what I’m on the hook for month to month.

    @molgrips
I’d question the thinking that it has to be weight bearing for it to improve bone strength. Tennis players for example have greater upper limb strength due to repeatedly striking a ball. There are studies that confirm this.

Potentially MTB confers similar benefits due to having to absorb vibrations/impacts with your limbs?

Either way, I think we all agree that exercise>no exercise. Where it gets tricky is deciding if MTB is the best exercise for us!

Have you considered a nice AirBnB apartment/house? I recently went to Paris and was pretty impressed with how it worked. It forced me to get out and explore, and put some thought into where we ate.

    curiousyellow

Where does it say it needs to be weight bearing for it to be any good? Does this mean swimming is terrible for you?

Hypermobility means I occasionally dislocate my shoulder going down some rocky stuff. Just need to pop it back in and I can finish riding. It’s sore for a few days after, but nothing some painkillers and rest won’t cure. Weight training usually sorts it out, but I’ve been riding more this year so the upper body wastage is worse.

MTB (cycling in general)means I’ve become more aware of what I eat and more aware of my weight. Both of these are major positives. A lot of people are unaware of how much their diet affects their lives in general.

Why the assumption that it is a burnt bridge?

A mate told his company he would be leaving in 1 year’s time because he wanted to migrate. He did this because he thought the company had been good to him he wanted to do good by them.

They used it to shaft him out of his bonus. There’s a clause in the contract saying employees on notice can be excluded from bonus calculations. Not a classy move.

How is this better than a small DJ bike with rigid forks?

    – Pimms in a thermos.
    – Wet wipes.
    – Massive sandwiches that won’t go soggy and snacks.
    – Hat
    – Wear something comfortable.

Grab a print out of the order of play and see which outside courts have decent players on them.
