    Ordered the car yesterday. Really grateful to everyone who has helped me understand what I’m getting into! Now I play the waiting game.

    I find an additional charge added to the bill without asking to be offensive

    Usually it’s mentioned on the menu.

    If you can find out what the BT DNS servers are, then try setting them explicitly instead of setting the wireless adapter to try and get them automatically.

    Haha! I thought that! It would be good to know exactly what they can offer before I pop down though. Is it not normal to have PCP on nearly new cars? Not averse to a straight finance deal as long as terms are right.

    Less than a year. Is it normal for the dealer to not want to discuss finance over the phone? If they pull any bait and switches then I will leave immediately.

    It’s a used car, but I will check to make sure how much they will pay out in the first year.

    @TheLittlestHobo
    Any tips on how/where to check HPI? I can google it, but if you have any recommendations then please let me know 🙂

    @the-muffin-man
    Will do. My research on prices is based on Autotrader searches for the same make/model. I believe there is some wiggle room because there are similar models with additional features (safety pack) around the same price. I was going to see if they could at least throw in some services, fuel, floor mats etc to sweeten the deal if I can’t get a discount on price.

    Booked a test drive for this weekend.

    Anything I need to watch out for on the hard sell? Already know about Gap insurance and things like glass protection or whatever it is. Is there anything you can ask for to sweeten the deal? Free servicing, floor mats etc?

    Scope the smoothest lines. It’s amazing how much quicker you can get when you pick your lines right.

    I think Nationwide will throw in travel insurance and breakdown cover if you take out their paid current account. £10 per month and interest on balances up to £2500 (5% I think).

    @TheLittlestHobo

    Thanks for clearing that up! I did not know they would want their money back immediately, nor did I know they would settle the claim with the finance company and not the owner. That is strange. How do they stake their claim to the insurance? Do you have to list them as the owner when taking out the policy?

    @wzzzz

    First family car, so looking at something less than 3 years old. I have found something that is 2/3 RRP. I get what you’re saying, they’re making money somewhere. But other cars I’m finding of a similar age are pretty close to the money. I guess you could negotiate a discount on cash, but I’d rather have the money in the bank at the moment.

    curiousyellow

    @Flaperon how do you gauge a good price?

    I tried something like this.
    – Total finance payments over 3 years = x
    – GFV = y
    – Price of a similar aged, condition, make, model car = z
    – If y < z then it’s likely to be a good deal to buy.

    @otherjonv thanks, I will make sure I check that. Gap insurance seems pretty cheap. I am getting £141 to cover £15k? Is that about right?

    curiousyellow

    @b r

    The way I understood it was even if I wrote off the car, I would have to keep up the payments, and then pay the GFV for the car at the end of it.

    Say I write off a £10k car with a GFV of £5k. My car’s insured value is £8k taking into account the forecourt depreciation. I write it off driving out of the forecourt and the insurer gives me £8k. I use the £8k from the insurer to buy a car in similar condition. I keep up the payments on the finance. At the end I pay the GFV and my obligation on the finance is discharged.

    Have I understood this wrong?

    Agree on the points that lower finance rate is offset by a higher sticker price, but with things like deposit contribution it seems to be roughly the same give/take £1000-£2000. Is this the experience others have had?

    Thanks @otherjonv and @dannybgoode

    Thought it wouldn’t hurt to try.

    I’d not bother with gap insurance because I’m aiming to keep the car at the end of the term. I was under the impression that it only mattered if you were going to hand it back and had a crash.

    These days I attend weddings based on this criteria:

    – Am I happy these people are getting married?
    – Will my being there make either of the people getting married happy?

    If the answer to either is no. Then I’d not go. If you’re not that close then politely decline. I’ve been to weddings where I wish I’d not bothered, but I’ve never seen a wedding I didn’t go to and wish I had.

    All these yacht dream jobs.

    How did they get back into the workforce after the elites got tired of paying for them to do it or they got tired of the job and changed their minds?

    curiousyellow

    Sorry to revive this, but I have some more questions if anyone would like to help.

    I’ve seen the car at around 13% off the RRP. Is it normal for the finance calculations to include the manufacturer contribution to calculate the value? I’m assuming this is a value used for insurance calculation only?

    Also, is there wiggle room to negotiate the GFV when the payment term ends? Say the GFV is £9k, can you point to cars in similar condition going for less and ask they match the amount? It doesn’t hurt to ask, but I’m trying to see if anyone has had any luck doing that.

    Does post-IPO owner of a successful startup count?

    I keep thinking I’d like to build a startup, but my mind keeps throwing up obstacles.

    I’d not mind being a children’s tennis coach, but the money’s not that great, and tennis parents.

    I was in the outside lane when my car started emitting smoke from the airvents. Even with the loss of power (blown gasket), it gave me enough time to put the hazards on and get to the hard shoulder. I do remember it being a bit dicy to switch lanes with a car losing power.

    Pretty horrible way for it to end for the poor lady.

    If it were me. Hazards on, get out into the central reservation, make my way across to the hard shoulder if possible and call 999.

    I wonder if modern cars are safe enough for the passenger to survive if they were rear ended at 70mph while stationary. Could you sit tight and wait if there’s no alternative?

    – Make notes, both electronic and paper. Writing it down will help you memorise it, and give you a backup in case technology fails for whatever reason.

    – Keep it simple. I’d avoid anything that would need a power source, or more than one person to set up. Props are interesting, but they add a level of hassle.

    – Is there anyone there who should have been, but couldn’t for whatever reason? Hit them up for a message. My mate’s weddding was in Oz and some of his dearest relatives couldn’t make it because of the cost. Getting a card from them to read out at the wedding meant a lot to him.

    – Know your audience. E.g: If the bride has a large, very religious family, then perhaps tone down the jokes to suit.

    – Remember you’re there to make your mate look good first.

    – Enjoy doing it. It’s an honour. Most people are lucky if they get asked to be the best man once in their lives.

    Please ignore any suggestions to “wing it”. Appointing you as the best man is not something your mate would have done lightly. Aside from the speech, try and find out as much about the wedding as you can. You’ll be front and centre and people will be asking you questions all day long. You’re part of the wedding, so it helps to know some basic things like what time food will be served, when the bride and groom will enter. If you’re a sociable type, then try and get to know some of the guests and help them have a good time.

    High taxes on cars leads to some crazy things happening in island nations.

    Look at places like Sri Lanka where cars are appreciating assets due to restrictions on import.

    I use the Guardian to find a narrative they’re pushing and then follow it through on other news sources. If it’s a worthwhile story it will be in the cycle for a while. So I’d buy the weekend paper, go through that, and whatever you think is important you can follow.

    If you’re looking for in-depth UK political news covering important themes (healthcare, foreign affairs, government projects etc), then Private Eye is hard to beat. The sub was definitely worth it.

    I only subscribe to one news source called Nextdraft, but a lot of that is tech/science/politics skewed.

    I read the Guardian website.

    If I go to Waitrose, then I will buy the Guardian. You get the money for it off your shopping.

    I used to subscribe to Private Eye, but stopped when the overwhelming amount of corruption detailed in it began to lead to a sense of nihilism and general dejectedness. I’m more ignorant, but less anxious because of it. I may buy this fortnight’s copy for a news source on Brexit though.

    Growing up, we had at least 3 newspapers in our house. The state owned paper, and two privately owned papers (one of which was in a different language). We also got a fortnightly tabloid type paper.

    I will subscribe to printed newspapers at some point. It will probably be the Guardian, the Sun and maybe The Observer and The Times at the weekend.

    If the mother can express enough then maybe try some freezer bags for the breast milk so you can store a little bit. Hopefully you have an electric pump and not a manual one. It’s worth learning how to use them too.

    Breast shells are also worth the money if the mother’s production is not great.

    And congratulations! Enjoy all the time you get to hold him. They start squirming and trying to be independent all too soon.

    Cheers! Used to run CBs, but switched to SPDs a few years ago when the XT Trails came out. I do find myself looking at the Mallets and thinking “what if” though. Haven’t had any problems with CB stuff like some people seem to.

    Interestingly, I do seem to have managed to break a set of Saint pedals!

    – Take a packed lunch and save yourself some money and time queueing at the cafe.
    – Watch out for the steeper lips on the A209 (or whatever it’s called) if you can’t jump good and do other things good too like me.
    – Arm pump is a killer. Watch your braking!
    – The drop into Coal Not Dole is not that bad.

    a) P(two_orange_sweets_in_a_row)=(6/n){5/(n-1)}=1/3
    90 = n(n-1)
    n^2-n-90 = 0

    b) n=10 using the quadratic equation formula. Must admit I had to work that out.

    If a train from Somerset leaves at 1200 travelling South, and a train from Reading leaves at 12:15 travelling Northwest, then at what time will my father who left for a packet of cigarettes 25 years ago come back?

    And eats like how she does.

    Where are these bike shops offering cash discounts? I’ve never had anyone offer money off for cash when I’ve asked.

    C2W is hard to beat even if you buy on an interest bearing credit card! Not that I’d ever do that.
