Dual ply tyres for sure. A puncture in qualification will ruin your chance of getting in the race.
No need for a mud tyre even if it rains. Last year it rain lots and all tyres just clogged up!

I recently rode a fat bike. Do not understand the hype, might make sense if you rode on snow or sand but otherwise they are crap. Slow, heavy novelty items that will end up sitting in your shed not getting used. All I kept thinking was that the trails would have been much more fun on a normal bike.

    Novelty garbage in my opinion!

    Woody – I fully agree.

There is a culture of keeping up with the Jones round here. Lots of people in a lot of debt for big mortgages car loans etc. Our 21 year old receptionist drives a brand new Audi s3! My car 9 year old focus is by far one of the oldest scabbiest cars in the car park, but it is one of the few owned out right!

Eating out/ drinking in Aberdeen reflects this culture. Not many great places to eat out and even a curry can be expensive. Lots of atempts at style over substance with people trying to flash their cash.

Thankfully most of that is easily ignored/avoided but the amount of outdoor types around!

I have been in Aberdeen for 12 years now. Some people hate it others love it, just depends on what it is your looking for. I moved up here to uni from a small rural village, so Aberdeen feels like a big city to me, its not! Its quite small but has everything in it you require but is lacking culture.

On the other hand the outdoor scene is buzzing. So many people to climb/walk/bike with. The outdoors are just so accessable. Plenty of local biking, just look at the strava heat map to see the weath of trails.

Times are hard in Aberdeen? Well this depends on where within the oil industry you work. The company I work for is fine. It will bounce back, Aberdeen doesn’t solely rely on the North sea.

I wouldn’t live North of Aberdeen, its a bit bleak but west up deeside is lovely, but prices reflect that.

Just bought the LB 38mm rim on Hope pro II’s only used on one ride so can’t really comment. Initial impressions are very good. They are much lighter than the Stans rims I had before. I was able to run a lower pressure without the tyre squirming and folding and the didn’t seem as draggy despite the lower pressure.
So far I am glad I bought them but only time will tell.
I think you will always look towards the LB ones if you don’t buy them and wish you had!

s Humanism a form of religion and is it something you sign up for much like say christianity?

Dunno why, but this made me laugh.
You don’t sign up for christianity, do you?

I more meant its something you believe in follow and live your life by much like a religion. Where as Humanism seems like a set of moral values that (decent?) people live by anyway.

why is the chin guard not required at the moment?

At the moment the SES (Scottish Enduro Series) don not require a full face helmet hence why the guard is not required at the moment. If these rules change it would be nice to be able to just buy the chin guard.

I have a proper full face lid that I use when I feel the need but find it a bit much for some of the races.

    Cheers

From my research a Berlingo or similar is a better choice.
Cheaper to buy and better to drive apparently.

If I forget to put the clutch on the chain falls off at the first sign of a bump. I think it would be ok with a hardtail as there is less chain elongation and movement.

    I have one.
I ordered the base model that came with standard 135mm QR axel. I bought the parts to change to 142 x 12. This involved replacing the dropouts and mech hanger.
I ran a 36 tooth ring in the alps for a week. So you can easily fit bigger than 32.
Bearing life is now fine, think there was paint overspray in the main pivot bearing race causing the bearing to feel rough even when newly installed. I cleaned this out and the bearing is smooth and seems to be lasting well.

I went for the BOS upgrade. Not sure if its worth the extra cash. Would probably have went with the FOX and bought Pikes instead. The Kirk on the rear seems good.

The headset that comes with it its total crap gritty and rusty in minutes, worth replacing asap. Overall I am very happy with the bike. Descends very well and climbs well for what it is.

Definitely use dual ply tyres SG Shcwalbes are not tough enough. A puncture in the qualifying will ruin your chances of getting into the main race.

and SRAM still have that 10t cog. Everyone focuses on the 42 end of the cassette but that 10 is just as significant.

    Not to me.

the lower end of the cassette is more important. 10% difference between 10 and 11 not much difference between 40 and 42!

I run a 2.35 Magic Mary and the clearance is very poor. However it works and mostly doesn’t bother me. It has twice bunged up though. Once at the Mega last year where everything was bunged up and once in some very sticky conditions somewhere else.
I raced the Selkirk Enduro 2 weekends ago and it was very sticky claggy mud and had no issues with it clogging. The odd stone does hit off the arch though.

Also ran 2.5 DH highrollers in it with no probs.

As has been said above they must be the same as the 26inch lowers hence the crap clearance

Audi A4 is only the size of a focus

An A4 is much smaller than a Focus. Girlfriends dad has an A4 estate and I have a focus Estate. Not even slightly comparable. A4 Boot is tiny.

You get small motion alarms which you could stick on your bike. If the bike moves the alarm will go off and if your in a tent it will easily wake you.

In my Focus estate I can fit the bike in upside down with both wheels off. Don’t think it would fit with rear wheel on though. The Mondeo’s boot is bigger but not much if any taller. The good thing is both of them don’t have a lip so its easy to slide things in and out.

No, your freehub body OD is too big for a 10t cog. Thats why sram have a different freehub design.

I know of one person doing this and he claims it runs perfect so yes.

I just find that if it doesn’t run right up to the rim edge it catches on the tyre bead when you remove a tyre and lifts up. Hopefully the 29mm tape is wide enough to avoid this. Think this might only be an issue with my current rims WTB i25’s due to the profile though.

muddy9mtb – the superstar bashing threads have been done to death and we are all bored of reading them. I have had nothing but good quality components from superstar and the one time I did contact them, their customer service was excellent.
The OP asked a question on a specific component and your reply is irrelevant.

I recently got these tyres for my Focus http://www.mytyres.co.uk/cgi-bin/rshop.pl?s_p=Goodyear-Efficient-Grip-Performance-205_55-R16-91W&details=Ordern&typ=R-234549&cart_id=42759652.110.14035&ranzahl=4&Breite=205&Quer=55&Felge=16&Speed=W&weiter=0&Ang_pro_Seite=5&sort_by=Lable_DEX&Transport=P&dsco=110&rsmFahrzeugart=ALL

I know those are the wrong size. The main thing I noticed was how quiet they are compared to the last tyres I had. For motorway miles they make a huge difference. They seem to be wearing ok and I haven’t noticed any negatives in terms of grip. Think they won an award in Auto Car but can’t be sure.

Cheers but not sure I agree, as why would the bearing feel rough when installed in the frame with no shaft in place? But then when you remove it from the frame it feels smooth again. Hence why I think the bearing is being squeezed.

    Its an Orbea Rallon.

Cynic-al – not sure what pics would do to help as we will be talking very small differences in size. The bearing on 1 side is fine but just gets knackered on the non drive side. Are you suggesting its the cylindricity that is out on the frame? As in where the bearing sits is oval on shape not round?

Most “Enduro” riders went out and rode their bikes for fun. Most still do, they just happen to enjoy the enduro race format. No-one I know classes themselves as an “Enduro rider” they just ride mountain bikes and take part in the races.

Is enduro riding not essentially timed red/black trail centre riding?

The Scottish series certainly is a good bit harder than that!

I run a Magic Mary in my 160mm deviles in 650b. Also got a wee plastic bender fender in there. Clearance is tight but it hasn’t clogged up yet. (it did at the Mega this year but everything did!

As far as Estate cars go you can’t get much bigger than a Mondeo. If a Mondeo is too small you need a van. Freelanders are much smaller internally.
You could fit a rhino in the back of a Mondeo!

I am 6 foot 1 and have a Large bike with a 150 reverb. I used to have a gravity dropper 100mm on an older bike and was always dropping the post or making do with it too high or too low. Now with the 150 I never need to move the post as at full extension its fine for cycling along the road and at minimum I would have no need to have it lower.
Some mates have 125 Reverbs and they occasionally have to drop or raise theirs. If I borrow their bikes I now feel there is not enough range with 125. If you can fit a 150 in your height range get it, you won’t regret it.

It does not take much longer to go via Perth and Glencoe. To get to Glencoe from Aberdeen I always go this way. Fort William is usually quicker going up to Huntly and across to Dufftown. But I have no idea what the roads are like with snow at the moment.
The A96 to Inverness is a terrible road and will take you hours. 2.5 hours during the day is average so in this weather I dread to think how long it will take.

For 1k you can’t be fussy on Make or Model. Just have to see what’s available and what condition it is in and go from there.

I had the same issue with these rims. It sealed fine but when I removed the tyre, the bead caught the edge of the tape and lifted that off with the tyre. I ended up using wider tape and it works fine.

This is such an obvious gap in the market, I can imagine Hope will sell loads. Unfortunately I bet it will be a different freehub to the Sram 11sp giving us yet another standard!
