Cheers folks, that’s what I assumed would be the case.

Thanks folks, will investigate chrome dongle thing and have a look at some of the other options you mention.

To make your choice even more difficult I recently bought the Thule Euroclassic G6 929 after reading reviews of the Atera ones not being quite as solid as the Thule. My mate had 4 large “Enduro” bikes on it and it still felt solid.

If it was not 2nd hand then yeah its a warranty claim and you will get a new one. I do not know why though as a full service and replacement of tired seals will fix the problem. Mine did this (stealth over 2 years old) and I did a full strip down and rebuild and problem was sorted. There are detailed instuctions on the SRAM website on how to do it. Didn’t take too long either, maybe a couple of hours. Would be quicker next time now I know what I am doing.

Friend of mine has a SWB T5 Caravelle. He has it set up to seat 4 with 2 single chairs in the back. We fitted 4 Large “Enduro” bikes in the boot with front wheels off. Although if any had been a 29r I doubt this would have worked.

I stopped at a McDonalds while driving up the road the other night didn’t get any food (or what they call food) but did order a coffee. £1.20 for an Americano that was better than the Starbucks I had at the airport earlier on and half the price. Worth remembering if a caffeine hit is required while on the road.

We used Martin from island mountain rides as mentioned above. He was brilliant. Taylor ed the days out perfectly and it was more like riding with one of your mates. Would highly recommend.

But what does it give you that the equivalent estate car doesn’t? Apart from worse comfort, handling and fuel economy!

What is the point in the Q5, let alone the SQ5? Odious blobs of automobile bile

Totally agree. What is the point in these odd vehicles? If you want want a fast good handling car why would u buy one of these over a big engined A6 or 5 series or similar. Nothing good about sQ5’s or similar if u ask me.

Do you not think it’s rather dangerous to obscure your lights with 3 bikes? Especially if your driving long distances with your family on board? I would not do that.

Have a look hereTrailforks[/url] for trail info.

This app will show you some of the offpiste trails at Glentress to do as well as some of the stuff at Inners. Worth taking a trip up the Golfie too if you have the time. Also worth taking a wee pedal out to do some of the trails not just on the front of the hill when you do your uplift day.

I looked at it a few times in 2014 but never mustered up the courage. Told myself the landing was too chopped up after all the rain (was the week after the Mega so was really bad). I did do the river gap which also looked massive but was very doable, so maybe try that first?

    Narrow handlebars.

    Problem solved.

Yip its the 780mm that cause the problem. I am sure if I wiggled around I might get it in but it would be a pain. Thankfully it goes in backwards, it just isn’t ideal. I didn’t even consider this being a possibility, I knew it would fit as the Mondeo is bigger. Quite a surprise when I tried!

Does it really need to be tailored? If it’s going to get covered in dog hair and mud/oil then something like this will do perfectly well… Boot liner

Nope it doesn’t have to be but I imagine the tailored ones stay in place better and I am less likely to get annoyed by it and not use it.

I had to get a boot liner custom made for my Bentley.

    😀

How much protection do you want and what are your expectations on price

The car is new to me and I plan on keeping it for at least 7 years, longer if possible so I don’t mind spending a bit of cash but obviously if one for £60 (see link above) is almost as good as one for £150 then that’s a no brainer.

It will be used allot for muddy bikes and a dog.

Thanks for that, looks like the Amazon link I put up is for that UK Custom Covers so that is promising.

Isn’t an RS4 pretty much everyones dream every day car?

Not even close, have you been in one? They are so small and uncomfortable. Not been in an RS4 but an A4 Sline. I honestly couldn’t believe how cramped it was. We had a couple of bike bags that I just threw in my Focus estate without even thinking about it. Tried to transfer them over into the A4 Avant and they would not fit. Even the boot on the A6 is not that generous, maybe just the shape though.
But even sitting in the A4 feels cramped its almost like the seats are too bulky for the size of car. If I wanted or could afford a fast estate the RS4 would not be my choice.

Hopefully the other sports involved that just ignore their doping problems will be found out too.

No, you described it as a non issue. Others pointed out that certain ones will fit in the boot. I described situations where it may be a useful feature.

Because you’re creating a load of extra faff and limiting your choice of products to solve a non-existent problem.

What are you on about? I just explained exactly why I might need to take off the rack and put it in the boot. Whats the other option, leave it on the ground or block a road? I can think of a couple of places I go to where you would park nose first into a space and the rack would then poke out too far for other vehicles to pass. It might not happen very often but if there are two similar products and one folds up easily and can go in the boot that would be a handy feature to add. Sounds like the Atera does exactly that. The other good looking option is the Witter one pictures above.

What is the extra faff you speak off?

Dual Ply DH tyres are the sensible choice. So many spikey rocks.

    2. Presumably you managed to park there with the bikes on the car..

Easy to park nose first into a space with the rack poking out into the road, remove bikes then stick rack in car, problem solved.
If it is easy to stow away in the boot then why not?

Do they fold down easy enough to keep in the boot while your out riding?
Not sure why you’d want to? They lock onto the towball…

    Two reasons-

    1. Cant imagine the lock is overly secure
    2. If you are in a small parking space and want to head off for a ride you might need to take it off.

Do they need to be on a lead when going up?
YES (Please) – There are sheep grazing all over.

If your dog is well trained ignores sheep and is kept under control like mine is then no need for a lead.

I just put a 2.3 DHR II MAXX Terra on the rear. It definitely seemed less draggy than my previous HANS DAMPF, cant compare to MK2 though.

Given the weather what tyres should I run?
Shorty on the front or leave my minion dhf on?
As for the rear my HR2 will be staying on unless it drys out significantly and the Semi slick can go on.

    Cheers

The disadvantage of uplift is that you will only ride the trails coming down the front of the hill. These trails are excellent though but the issue I find is that unless there is a way tapped up there are so many trails crossing one another it can be tricky to get a good flow down the hill as you are constantly seeing different trails to take.

As br says, ride the Golfie!

I have a Bird Zero TR and I really like it. Long low and slack. Seems to be of good quality and I like the wide tyre clearance. The frame suited what I was looking for. The guys at Bird are great when you phone them up too.
Never tried the 456 so I can’t compare.

    Is this for 11 speed?

I have 10 speed saint on one bike and 11 speed xt shifter on another.
I prefer the feel of the 10 speed saint shifter but not by much. I have not tried xtr 11 speed to know if that shifter is better in feeling.

Arrive on sat morning go to sign on area. Sing on get your number board, pick a start time for the sunday and get a map for the course. Go out and practice the trails in any order you like.
Sunday arrive and go collect your timing chip about 30 mins before your start time. Go to start line and wait to be told to set off and then do the trails in numerical order. Once finished hand in timing chip look at your results. Wait for everyone to finish then stand on podium if you have won!

esher shore- is that using a mains powered angle grinder? Have you tried it with a battery powered portable one? Would be interesting to see the results.

I don’t know the answer to your question, but I do own the Almax chain and Squire Padlock and they do seem very good. The chain has the advantage of being easily fed through the ground anchor in my garage and then around some bikes. The D lock would not work in this fashion for me.

Would be good to see how both stood up to a grinder though.

For less than half the price you can get one of these http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/x-tools-pro-mechanic-wheel-truing-stand/rp-prod122322?gs=1&gclid=CjwKEAiAjfq2BRDpmdHmssaW5xsSJABToP4lS-iiyLSLD8fhNIS8QZeNIsC6GivBUBqxnSELklxBqhoCy3rw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

Maybe not quite as good as the park one but not far off it. Solid bit of kit IMHO

If you had winter tyres you would not have needed ‘crappy snow socks’.
Also better chance of steering and stopping in the snow with winter tyres as your snow socks are only on the rear.
