    Guess where?

Jenga, looking at the rock i first thought it was gabbro = black cuillin but the shape of the summit looks like Scafell to me.

So 'allowing Polish economic migrants' has nothing to do with WW2 then ?

    Got it in one 🙂

It had nothing to do with WWII. (Letting in the gurkhas from Nepal did however).

The economic migrants came here because we are in the EU and we voted for a free market in labour, goods, services and capital.

Just buy the best bike for the money. At least if there is a problem it might be easier to get some after sales service from a British company.

If i were German it would be the assumption German = fascist that i would find offensive.

As that American guy said about 911. Some subjects are better left for serious reflection rather than comedy.

    Great pics mrmichaelwright.

Particularly like the ones of the hares. At least turning white in the winter has benefited them this year! 🙂

Was in the peak district myself this weekend over in the Goyt valley. Some stunning winter scenes there too.

Cold doesn't bother me either, sliding on ice does, as does being hit bit a skidding car. I guess I'm just not man enough.

If my commute was along a busy road i wouldn't be doing it either. I have the option of riding 7.5 miles along a busy A-road to work which i have never done.

Instead i ride off-road and along quiet country lanes which takes the commute up to 11.5miles but much more enjoyable. The worst bit is the 200m along the main A-road from my house. Didn't make it this morning but hoping to make it out again tomorrow.

    Great pics btw. franksinatra

11.5 miles (each-way) mostly off-road and on quiet (this morning deserted) back roads 🙂

Planning on doing my 11.5 miler through mid-Derbyshire tomorrow morning.

Good advice on looking for the soft stuff. Very gentle steering input, let the bike go where it wants to, keep pedalling and you'll be toasty warm and lovin' it in no time 🙂

High peak trail / Tissington trail / Cromford canal are all good routes in these conditions IMO.

Rode them a few times over the last week or two and they are at their best straight after the fresh snows.

Once the freeze / thaw cycle gets going though they can turn to badly rutted ice quite quickly.

Another point is to watch out for the wind chill as they are often open lanscapes and you are not excercising to the point of sweating once on the flat stuff. A flask of hot tea and preferably soup too is a welcome addition to the back pack IMO. The morale booth is worth 10 x the weight penalty at least 😉

I remember some of the winters in the 1980's had a lot more snow hanging around for a lot longer. This one has already delivered more than some of the recent pathetic winters of the noughties though.

Its still early days and this winter has started off well. Hopefully there will be further snows and cold to come. 🙂

    😳

yes, of course i knew that all along really, ahem.. just testing you.

Sounds like it could do a job though. My feet didn't get really cold until it started snowing and the snows melted causing my socks to become wet.

I wont order a pair now as maybe santa will have some for me tomorrow. 😉

    great pics 🙂

Excuse my ignorance for asking but what are snow-spats? My feet got quite cold on a recent ride and I could be in the market for spending some cash to try and keep my tootsies a bit warmer.

Great pics mate. Missed out on the chance to do my commute today 😥 as I am off work on holiday.

Made up for it with a 7-hour ride through a snowy mid-Derbyshire though 🙂

On my Friday evening commute home, in the dark on a quiet and narrow country lane, I had a car full of chavs decide to "play games". They slowed behind me and started to open the doors shouting "come on lads lets take him out". The car then drew up very close with doors open and the driver revved the engine as if he was about to boot it.

I stood off the road in the hawthorn hedge hoping they would just **** off. They closed the doors at the last minute before they would have hit me and the car went past accelerating quickly.

I was going to shout some abuse back but I thought it was not sensible to do so being 4 vs 1. It was the right call as around the next bend at the junction the car was waiting for me with the reverse lights on. When i took the left fork it backed up and followed me again repeating the previous episode. The road is very narrow at this point so again I just stood off the road hoping they would clear off which eventually they did shouting profanities as they went.

After reading some of the other stories on this forum though i guess i should be thankfull i didn't have anything thrown at me or rotten milk poured on my head! 🙂

I'm hoping it's going to get colder so the mud freezes.

    +1

With hindsight it was a bad idea to include the singletrack through the wetland nature reserve this morning. 🙁

Keswick had around 60mm rain today between 09 am and 09 pm…that's less than half that Gloucester had in the floods there a couple of years ago.

Yes but parts of the catchment area have seen over 300mm in 24 hours (an English record) double the amount in Gloucester a couple of years ago.

I'd head out to Buxton way. Maybe something in the Goyt valley, or around Three Shires Head and you've also got Macclesfield Forest / Wildboarclough area too.
