Is it ok if I deliberately plant some daffodil bulbs in the countryside

    IMO, answer = no

in this case the consequence isn’t a big deal but it seems a bit sad when we simply accept the destruction of something beautiful, that could be shared, because one group of people don’t have any appreciation that others might like to enjoy it

A bit like the local mountain bikers who have built trails through and destroyed areas of ancient woodland wildflower colonies deemed of international significance by Natural England.

Yep I’ve been. Enjoyed it alot but I stayed in the nearby Karkonosze mountains and only visited Wroclaw for a couple of days. A lot of historic buildings in the centre. Can’t advise if you would like it or not though as it depends what you’re looking for.

Had a range rover drive straight at me the other night during my commute home. Filthy night, singletrack road, I hade to swerve off to avoid a near collision.

The person in the range rover just booted it, they were obviously in a rush and had no time to be delayed by a lowly cyclist.

Does your local council have a greenway strategy? Put pressure on them to deliver an integrated offroad network.

My old commute was 23 miles total which I often did 5 days a week.

My new commute was 40 miles total which I managed 2 or 3 days a week typically.

The 40 mile commute was too much to do 5 days a week (4 days was the most I achieved). It was the build up of early starts at 5:15am combined with a full day at work which I found too draining to do regularly for more than a couple of days per week

I’ve still never figured out where all the worlds richest nations borrow all this **** money from. It can’t be from the poorer ones, Lloyds TSB don’t have that much dosh and my grandad keeps his under the bed.

They borrow it from China. China makes a lot of money manufacturing stuff and then their government buys US government bonds making the US banks awash with cash which they then lend out to people who cant afford to pay them back.

My morning commute is ~20 miles and it takes me just over 2 hours usually, giving an average speed of around 9mph

On the way home I take a flater multi-user route and cover the 18 miles in around 1 hour 40 minutes.

Looks like I would be getting overtaken quite a bit if the respondants in this thread lived round my way!

I commute on singlespeed using 32:16 ratio. In winter most of the route is on road / tarmac

Pretty much our entire country is an industrial wasteland of one sort or another. It’s not a natural landscape and it’s certainly not wilderness.

Not worth worrying about and certainly not worth ‘protecting’.

Disagree with this. Ancient woodland and unimproved grassland are certainly worth protecting IMO, especially as there is now so little left after decades of abuse and neglect. The government seem to agree with you though e.g. plans for the route of HS2.

IMO alot of the problems with habitats being trashed are caused by people not knowing how to behave at best or just being plain ignorant at worst. E.g. chucking down litter when out in the countryside, carving new trails through rare plant colonies in an SSCI, letting their dogs run wild in a nature reserve with ground nesting birds etc.

Also the ever increasing population is putting more pressure on the remaining undeveloped areas and wildlife finds it increasingly difficult to avoid disturbance.

I would have thought there are activities having much bigger impacts than outdoor pursuits to attack though.

I was in some of the usual haunts for bluebells in my neck of the woods today but many of the plant colonies have been decimated by mountain bikers who have carved new trails straight through them.

Must have been about half a dozen new trails that I saw today that didn’t used to be there. Sad to see.

4 months ago I posted on the singletrack forum about CRC

I paid using a credit card that I very rarely use and have now found that some fraudulent transactions are appearing on my credit card

    link

Of course this may have been circumstantial and it might have been my anti-virus security at fault but it is another event worth logging.

    Enjoyed listening to that.

Fascinating bit of insight into the state of professional cycling at the time Obree broke the world hour record…

Some of the TDF riders came upto him asking what he had taken for the record thinking that Obree had found a new performance enhancing substance.

Little did they realise the secret was a part from Obree’s washing machine (plus an incredible effort and fitness level from Obree of course).

Amazing that they can find the money to do bits of trail like that yet on my commute home I am forced to mix it with busy traffic on narrow, unlit roads because the alternative off-road multi-user trails have just remained as little dashed lines on the 2006-2011 council local plan map and nothing in reality on the ground.

Isn’t chatswoth and around going to be a soggy this time of year? I’d be happy to give it a go if it’s not

River Wye at Bakewell has a flood warning out at the moment. River Derwent at Chatsworth is just a flood alert.

I would imagine tomorrow would be one of the worst days of the year for muddy trails round there.

Looks like Jacobs Ladder on Christmas Eve.

I had been out walking to the frozen waterfall at Kinder Downfall and sat down for a hot drink overlooking the Jacobs Ladder descent. I watched some guy ride down it on the bike and thought it was pretty impressive.

However it was only when i walked down it about 15 mins later that I realised it was essentially a frozen river (like your pics of charity lane) and I could barely stand up on it.

I was stunned (and still am) that someone could ride down it, amazing skills.

    Off road I take it?

    A mixture of on-road and off-road.

In the morning the roads are mainly back country lanes with (very) little traffic but in the evening there are a few busy sections before getting onto a Sustrans multi-user trail.

Condolences to you and your family CG.

My own father has alzheimers and it has been painful watching him decline with the passing years, powerless to reverse the changes and also the increasing burden of care it places on those closest to the suffer.

Water may currently be pumped directly to Ogston, that is where the majority of the water from Carsington is used throughout the year.

My commute takes me past Ogston in a morning and it does seem to have filled up a bit from the very low levels in late December / early January.

cuckoo maybe? i remember you having quite a bit of knowledge around this area?

I’m afraid I can’t help you on this one OW.

I am not local to this area and only ride there a handful of times in a year.

I have been walking round Lud’s Church before and remember thinking there were a lot more trails about than I first thought.

Looks like the only way to be sure is an out-of-hours cheeky ride 😀

    😳

just read the planning applications. Nothing to do with Monsal Trail.

Still down as +1 support though as any options to get around away from the A6 / A515 / A53 / A54 will be a big + for me.

I thought all this had already got the go ahead from “pedal peak district” or whatever they are called?

I use the high peak trail / tissington trail as off-road training in the winter when the local trails are muddy or there is alot of snow and ice down. Having the monsal trail as another option would be great IMO.

The multi-user trails are also good for linking up bridleways without venturing onto the busy peak district roads which can be hazardous with freight and cars a plenty.

I would imagine riding the Monsal trail would be better for families / tourists etc. as it is less exposed. Going through the tunnel and emerging onto the viaduct high above the Wye at Monsal Dale should be pretty cool for most people especially if they don’t realise whats ahead. A real pain at the moment having to take the detour up and over.

I have been using use Michelin Country Dry 2. Mainly because they were on offer when I bought them a while back.

Had a couple of punctures with farmers cutting hawthorn hedges and the snow melt washing debris onto the lanes recently.
