How to Thrive, not just Survive, this winter

Local loop yesterday evening, ferns are 8ft tall but it’s all running quite nicely
cteaglesFull Member@chakaping not that I’m aware of. It always feels manageable to me as it feels a lot shorter than the full loop all the way to the top!
cteaglesFull Member@Northwind It got revitalised for a local enduro, so I think it’s in pretty good shape, but I didn’t ride it last time I was there so I can’t say for sure!
@mahalo if you are happy on inners DH stuff then I don’t think there’s much to really worry about, aiming loosely for a trail off the top and just riding what you find will be best like Northwind said. You will quickly find what you want. The lower fireroad you can certainly be more selective with as it’s all a bit easier to work out on trailforks.Turn down for what has some pretty tricky bits if you try for the high lines, TTTT and those trails are steep but it’s nothing worse than the easiest Golfie trails. I think some of the bits over by the quarry can get quite steep but they (like scrambled eggs) are a little out of your way. When I go, it’s usually with no uplift, and I wam up on Frazers, climb to the top of TTTT and drop one of those trails (usually back into Frazers on the fire road) then do the full climb to the top. From there it’s bit of a rough guess for Red rum which comes off one of the official lines and make it up as I go from there. And you’ve got to ride Turn down for what, it’s such a well built trail and mega fun.
cteaglesFull MemberTrailforks will help you find the stuff I refer to below. I’m going to ignore the signposted trails, I don’t typically ride them loads, that’s not to say they are bad though. You will find once you set off there’s multiple options to pick and the off piste and the signposted trails become a bit of a mish mash. Kinda like Inners.
From the uplift drop off. I’d look to ride Red rum into Turn down for what (mega fun trail -must ride it) and also blue rum, which is as the name suggests a little easier. Any trail from the top brings you out on a fire road halfway down with more trails leading off that. Typically hit the fire road and turn left and then pick any trail on your right. Things like Jungle and IVO and fitter along gets you to Frazers which is a nice chill warm up if you want to get your eye in.
Peddling up afterwards is great for opening up the trails slightly lower down and over to the right as you look up at the hill from the shop. (It’s also a much easier pedal up than the full uplift slog)TTTT, Tea time etc, are nice trails that link nicely into Frazers and some others that take you from the fire road to the bottom.
the bike shop are friendly and helpful with offering suggestions as well.
If you want a pedal (not near the uplift stuff) Scrambled eggs is a good one to try as well.
Enjoy. AE its great!
cteaglesFull MemberWell that was easy! Thanks very much. I’d been looking at the UCI website which has sold out. Didn’t realise you could get them through Nevis range.
cteaglesFull MemberPlease correct me if I’m wrong but I’m sure self invested pensions (if paid into yourself, after you’ve been paid the money) do not reduce your yearly income pre tax.
cteaglesFull MemberV3 route here: https://www.komoot.com/tour/1444588785?ref=wtd&share_token=ah5ZL8zuHQjL3yyW4a8X4Z7tBax5Z9e0ZFd77nCrSe4e73YrR8
Route from Glossop to Forest of Bowland is feeling pretty good. And probably something that I can recce at some point soon.
Its looking loads better, i’m stuck at the Canal at Holme, unsure whats best to carry on. and cut across or jump over into the south lakes now. Any suggestions?
1cteaglesFull Member@crazy-legs Great thanks for that – and thanks for the offer of the ride. I’m not very often in Glossop but when I am and i’ve got the gravel bike I will drop you a message.
@alexpalacefan Thank you! @mick_r more climbing please! I don’t mind the hills, but I probably shouldn’t be detouring for any more of them!cteaglesFull MemberThanks @crazy-legs anything you didn’t enjoy on that route? or worth avoiding?
cteaglesFull MemberThanks @crazy-legs request sent!
@slackboy – noted, that will be a welcome stop! 🙂cteaglesFull MemberThanks all, very useful! @slackboy that looks ideal. I think I can probably throw in a few more off road bits north of Accrington just to keep it interesting.
My definition of off road in this case is anywhere where you can’t drive a car. cycleways, bridleways etc. I’m happy on wide open gravel tracks but some nice bits of singletrack are welcomed. I found a good mix kept my head focused, ideally I want to keep the wheels turning so minimal hike-a-bike please!
I’m hoping to complete this in the summer, but I think some recce rides over the coming months will be a good idea.
cteaglesFull MemberCurrently is very on road, with a few bits off road. The hope is to add in off road options based on suggestions, but I found the best way was to start with some kind of route based off what I do know and then tweak and change it.
Pennine bridleway was on the list to look into, so I will take that off! Thanks 🙂
cteaglesFull MemberKirroughtree is a lovely trail centre IMO, the full loop favours a fit rider or an ebike. Some cheeky stuff from local enduros on trailforks as well, same with Dalbeattie. (not sure about the storm damage)
Ae has got some seriously good riding away from the trail centre (ask in the shop) The red loops just had the main descent resurfaced and its had very mixed reviews.
Mabies a sweet trail centre, and if its on the doorstep id make the most of that.
cteaglesFull MemberJust checking, it’s only 3months left on a valid passport required to travel still? (Into the EU from the UK)
All the gov websites seem to say so. Been hearing lots about needing 12months now. Wonder if that’s causing some panic for people…
cteaglesFull MemberNot a whole lot to be had that isn’t bridleways round there I think and probably very muddy this time of year. I think there’s a tiny bit in Everdon Stubbs.
I’m based in Northampton and ride with the Rutland store rides when they are on (usually Sunday 9am) check the Pitsford store Facebook for the next one. Typically a lap of Harlestone firs and some surrounding bridleways. It’s nothing amazing but it’s a nice local loop
cteaglesFull MemberLove mine, went for the Comp carbon 2021 because of the 2x GRX which makes it pretty good on the road. Some light wheels and tyres would make it fly.
I think the base carbon one and some light wheels is probably a good option. Its never going to be quite as good as a road bike but for me its a perfect compromise.
cteaglesFull MemberVery happy so far, MBP with M1 processor and I edit video and photos for work everyday. It’s fast, runs smooth and zero issues so far. Much quicker than my old I7 iMac
cteaglesFull MemberOP has said he wants a lock for camping on a campsite not for wild camping.
cteaglesFull MemberLooks like I can choose High peak trail or Tissington with a slight route change coming out of Derby, any suggestions as to which might be better? From research and some google streetview investigation they look fairly similar.
Any real world experience anyone?
cteaglesFull MemberAh brilliant thanks for the pub suggestions.
Looks like I can get through Derby on a riverside path for the most part and then link up with the BW south of Kedleston. From Carsington north I think I am all sorted.
Some simple NCN routes to connect some of the other sections up if I can’t find anything more exciting.
cteaglesFull MemberWell you’ve already got the Brampton Valley Way in there so that’s my suggestion out the window. Hello from the other side of the racecourse (Abington).
Hello neighbour! That was the easy bit, its finding some nice lanes and tracks between MH and the Peaks thats going to be tricky!
I’d probably jump on the High Peak Trail near Middleton Top / Carsington and follow it to the end. Easy riding, flat and great views all the way to Buxton more or less
Aim to pick up the pennine bridleway at Middleton top near carsington res, follow it from there to glossop near enough.
Good suggestions, will for sure help me get over towards Chinley where i’ve got plenty of options depending on how the legs are feeling and how much time i’ve got left!
Thanks for all the useful comments!
cteaglesFull MemberIve got an estate, great car. I personally prefer the look and the practically of an estate. That said the hatch isn’t short on space at all. Id just say loading is going to be less hassle in an estate
cteaglesFull MemberButter, a good chunk of it. Eggs and a splash of milk and then just a they start to firm up in the pan take it off the heat and stir in a dollop of creme fraiche and then season. Plate up and add herbs of choice.
Bonus bacon, chopped and fried till crisp can be stirred in as well.

cteaglesFull MemberFree photography is very desirable, trying to charge for it makes it more difficult.
I’m currently working in the industry. I shoot editorial, corporate and Weddings. Would be happy to help with Any questions you have. Drop me a PM if you like.
cteaglesFull MemberIm 5’11 and on a Large 2020 Trance 29. Its kitted out with SLX drivetrain and Shimano Mt520 brakes. Its a great bike, nothing to crazy in terms of angles but its a good, fast trail bike
cteaglesFull MemberIve walked into a post office told them I have batteries in the parcel and they have said fine, stuck a sticker on and posted it – no issues
What they don’t want is people posting them without informing them. This was about 8 months ago, i don’t think its changed since.
cteaglesFull MemberYou can post batteries with RM, just tell them you are, they stick a label on it and it works like any other parcel – no issues 🙂
cteaglesFull MemberThanks for the advice! New tyres and some more pressure in the forks for the next training ride I think. The other things I will probably leave alone and only address if required.
Oh and bottle cages, on bike storage etc to remove the need for a rucksack..
Now to go and find her a bloody big hill to practice on!
cteaglesFull MemberExactly what BWD said, hard for someone not local to find a safe and fun route anywhere, I can usually use a OS map and google with a bit of strava segments to find myself a decent bit of riding but I was really struggling with this one. Thanks for all your help! 🙂
